ABOUT THIS SERIES
When faith gets uncomfortable, most people retreat. This series explores what happens when you stay faithful under pressure.
The early church thrived under persecution. Not despite it—through it. What did they know that we forgot?
SCRIPTURE ANCHOR
Acts 5:41 – Rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer
VOICES IN THIS SERIES
THE FIRST MARTYR
“Look, I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
Stephen becomes the first Christian martyr, but not before delivering the longest recorded sermon in the book of Acts. He was chosen as one of the seven to serve tables, described as ‘a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.’ He performed great wonders and signs among the people, and no one could stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.
DAY 1
THE ENEMY TRANSFORMED
“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
Saul is not spiritually indifferent. He is passionately committed. He is convinced that persecuting the church is an act of faithfulness to God. He held the coats of those who stoned Stephen and went on to ravage the church, entering house after house to drag believers to prison.
DAY 1
THE OUTSIDER WHO BELONGED
“Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”
An important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (queen) of Ethiopia. He had traveled to Jerusalem to worship, demonstrating genuine spiritual hunger. Yet as a eunuch, he was excluded from full participation in temple worship. On his way home, reading Isaiah’s prophecy about the suffering servant, he encountered Philip and the gospel met him exactly where religion had shut him out.
DAY 4
THE RELUCTANT OBEDIENT
“Brother Saul, the Lord — Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here — has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Ananias is a disciple in Damascus, otherwise unknown in the New Testament. When God calls him to go to Saul, he does something remarkably honest: he pushes back. He tells God what he has heard about Saul. He names the danger. He does not pretend the risk does not exist. And then, after hearing God’s purpose, he goes anyway. His first word to the man who came to arrest him: ‘Brother.’
