natah: to stretch out, extend, bend, turn aside, incline

Solomon’s heart was not seized. It was inclined – bent slowly, by what he loved, until it leaned away from the God who had appeared to him twice.

The narrator uses natah three times, like a hammer on the same nail. In verse 2 the danger is named: these wives will turn (natah) your hearts after their gods. In verse 3 the verdict lands: his wives turned (natah) his heart away. In verse 4 it is sealed. The grammar is doing what the chapter is about – the same bending verb keeps repeating because the same bending kept happening, a little more each year.

Drift does not feel like rebellion from the inside. It feels like a string of reasonable choices on familiar water, while the current you stopped checking carries you a few degrees off until you are on the rocks.

And Yet There Is a Lamp

Read the judgment and you brace for the kingdom to end. God says, “I will tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.” The tearing is real. Ten tribes will be ripped from the house of David, and the nation will never again be whole. But listen to how God limits His own sentence. “I will give one tribe to his son, so that My servant David will always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put My Name” (1 Kings 11:36). The kingdom is torn, but not extinguished. One tribe is left, not because Solomon earned it, but “for the sake of My servant David.” A lamp is kept burning in the dark, deliberately, against the wind of everything Solomon has done. This is the pivot the whole chapter turns on. The strict justice of the moment – a divided heart producing a divided kingdom – runs into something stronger than justice: a promise God made to David that Solomon’s failure cannot revoke. God will discipline the line. He says so plainly: “I will humble David’s descendants – but not forever.” The lamp is not Solomon’s faithfulness. The lamp is God’s. And God refuses to let it go out.
