Genesis 1:2 describes the state of creation before God begins His ordering work. The Hebrew phrase ‘tohu wabohu’ is often translated as ‘without form and void,’ but it carries deeper meaning. The description of earth as ‘tohu wabohu’ doesn’t necessarily mean it was evil, but rather that it was unfinished, unordered, and unfulfilled. It was raw material waiting for the Creator’s organizing touch. The ‘darkness over the face of the deep’ adds to the picture of primordial chaos. The Hebrew word ‘tehom’ refers to the primeval ocean, the watery abyss that represents the unformed state of creation. In the midst of this chaos, we encounter the ‘Ruach Elohim’—the Spirit of God. The verb ‘merachefet’ means ‘to hover,’ ‘to brood,’ or ‘to flutter.’ This image suggests not distant observation but intimate, protective presence. Like a mother bird protecting her nest, the Spirit of God hovers over creation with loving care and creative power. Genesis 1:1-2 reveals all three persons of the Trinity involved in creation. The Father speaks the creative word (verse 3), the Spirit hovers over the waters (verse 2), and the Word through whom all things are made is revealed in the New Testament to be the Son (John 1:1-3). Creation is a Trinitarian act.

In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on what he called the ‘last great polar journey’—an expedition to cross Antarctica from sea to sea. His ship, the Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed over ten months. Shackleton and his 27 men were stranded on ice floes hundreds of miles from rescue, facing starvation, frostbite, and the real possibility they would never see home again. Shackleton refused to give up. He took five men and sailed 800 miles across dangerous waters in a 22-foot lifeboat to reach South Georgia Island, then crossed uncharted mountains and glaciers to reach a whaling station. What’s remarkable is how he describes the presence he felt during the most desperate moments. In his book ‘South,’ he writes: ‘During that long march over the mountains of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three.’ His companions independently felt the same presence of a fourth person walking with them. All three men sensed this mysterious presence through the chaos and danger. Against all odds, he successfully rescued every single crew member—not one life was lost. When asked how he maintained hope in such desperate circumstances, Shackleton said, ‘In the midst of the chaos, when everything seemed lost, there was a presence—something hovering over our situation, bringing order to our thoughts and strength to our bodies.’
