Freedom in Christ is not the absence of difficulty, but the presence of choice in how we respond to difficulty. Immaculee could have chosen hatred, despair, or bitterness — all understandable responses to her situation. Instead, she chose to stand firm in the freedom Christ had given her: the freedom to love even her enemies, to hope even in darkness, to trust even when understanding failed her. The killers outside could control her movements, but they could not touch the liberty of her soul. Paul’s exhortation speaks directly to this reality: Christ has set us free not just from sin, but from every form of spiritual bondage that would seek to enslave us.
