Joshua 4:21 (BSB) – What is the meaning of these stones?
What are you carrying that God has already carried away, and what has He asked you to carry out?
Two stories about carrying, read side by side. At the Jordan, priests carry the ark into a river in flood, and twelve men carry stones back out of it. In Leviticus 16, a goat carries a whole people’s guilt into a land cut off. Seven days from Monday follow that one Hebrew verb from a riverbed to the wilderness and back, through two goats, a Roman courtyard and a prisoner who walked free, to a question a child will ask: what is the meaning of these stones?
