EU•AN•GE•LION (YOO-AN-GEL-EE-ON) · εὐαγγέλιον — Good News
All week the verb was carry. Today it is turned around. Day 7 is a day of rest: one short passage from Isaiah, ten minutes of quiet, one thing to set down and one stone to name.
Isaiah 46:3-4; Hebrews 4:9
Opening
Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.
Isaiah 46:3-4 (KJV)
The Lord speaks to His people through Isaiah. Just before this the prophet has described the gods of Babylon, which have to be carried on the backs of weary animals.
Carried
Today nothing needs to be carried.
All week we followed one verb, from the priests in the river to the stones on the bank.
Isaiah 46 has one more picture. It begins with the gods of Babylon. A modern translation says it this way: Their idols weigh down beasts and cattle. The images you carry are burdensome, a load to the weary animal. A few verses later the prophet describes the people who make them. They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands, not budging from that spot.
Against that, the Lord speaks to His own people. They are borne by me from the belly, He says, which are carried from the womb. Even to your old age I am he. I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.
The idols have to be carried. The Lord does the carrying.
So today is for being carried. The week gave you two small jobs, and you can do them in a minute each. Let one thing go. It can be something God has already sent away, or something you have been carrying that was never yours. Name one stone. It can be one moment when He held you that you could tell someone.
Then rest. Hebrews says that a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. You do not have to make it. It remains.
There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
Hebrews 4:9 (BSB)
The sentence from the week to take into the quiet.
REFLECT
What is one thing you could set down today, and what is one stone you could name?
Silence
The whole of today is this. Ten minutes, and nothing to finish.
Leave the screen
When this ends, put your phone out of reach. If someone depends on you, leave the ringer on.
Sit down
Choose a chair by a window, or a step outside.
Set one thing down
Hold out your hands. Think of one thing you have been carrying. Say its name once in your mind, and open your hands.
Name one stone
Think of one moment when God held you. Say it once in your mind, and close your hands gently, as if around a stone. If you cannot think of one, that is allowed. Name one person who stayed with you, or leave your hands open.
Stay
If silence or closed eyes feel unsafe, keep your eyes open or take a slow walk instead. Sit still. When your mind runs back to the list, come back to your open and closed hands. Say, if you wish: Even to hoar hairs will I carry you.
Close
Say: Thank You. Then go and rest.
Prayer
Lord, You carried what I could not. Today I will not carry anything for You. Hold me, and let me rest. Amen.
BREATH PRAYER
Inhale: You carry me — Exhale: and I rest
IN YOUR OWN WORDS
