Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, ”Because I bore him in pain.”

Jabez — a name built from the consonants of the Hebrew word for pain
His mother’s explanation points at עֹצֶב (otsev, “pain, sorrow”) — but look closely at the letters. The pain-word runs ayin-tsade-bet (ע-צ-ב). The name runs ayin-BET-TSADE (ע-ב-ץ): the same three consonants with the last two swapped. She named him Pain — with the letters scrambled.
Scholars call this metathesis: a deliberate transposition of sounds. A straight formation from the pain-root would have produced Ya’tsev, “he causes pain.” The actual name bends the word out of order — and the rearrangement turns out to be the story of his life. The scrambled name foreshadows the scrambled destiny. One caution as you hold this: the name carries pain’s consonants without literally spelling the word — the pun lives in the sound, the way family nicknames so often do.

ANCIENT TRUTH
In Jabez’s world, a name was a trajectory — spoken over you at birth, repeated by every mouth that greeted you, pointing your life toward its meaning.
Jabez never got his name changed. The record calls him Jabez in his verse of honor just as in his verse of sorrow. What changed was the authority he answered to — he took the name to the God of Israel and asked Him to write the ending.
MODERN APPLICATION
Your trajectory-words probably came later than birth — a report card, a rejection, a divorce, a diagnosis, a parent’s exhausted sentence. But they function the same way: silently steering what you believe you are allowed to become.

The Address Called Jabez
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Rabbinic tradition (the Targum on 1 Chronicles and the Talmud, Temurah 16a) identifies Jabez with the judge Othniel — a tradition, not a historical claim, but evidence of how large this two-verse man loomed in later Jewish memory.
Now this is what the LORD says— He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!”

Today's Practice: A Breath Prayer
A breath prayer is a sentence small enough to ride on your breathing — prayed slowly, a handful of times, until the body believes it too.
Settle
Sit still. Breathe slowly twice, just to arrive.

Breathe in on the words: You call me by name.

Five slow rounds. When an old name interrupts — and one will — do not argue with it. Just start the next breath.
Prayer
(declarative)God of Israel, You have heard every name I answer to — the ones on my documents and the ones burned in by hard days. I bring them to You instead of rehearsing them to myself. Thank You that You write honor into the same verse as sorrow, and You put it first. As this new season opens, teach me to walk into it as someone You call by name, and not as what my worst chapter called me. Through Jesus, who kept His scars and outlived them. Amen.

The Man Himself
Tribe of Judah; his dates are unknown — preserved in a record compiled after the exile
One of Scripture’s most complete mysteries: no father named, no deeds listed, no descendants recorded, appearing in exactly two verses of a genealogy. His entire surviving biography is a painful name, an uncommon honor, and a prayer God granted. A town of scribes in Judah bore his name (1 Chronicles 2:55); later Jewish tradition remembered him as a great teacher — memory outrunning the text, which is itself a kind of testimony.

LESSON FOR US
You do not need a résumé for the ledger of God to stop for you. He entered the record with a wound for a name and left it marked honorable — on the strength of who he asked.
