And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would bless me and enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.

The second petition. The King James renders it ‘enlarge my coast’ — the old English word for a border. Today we walk the property line.

border, boundary, territory — the line that marks where your ground begins and ends
In Israel, a gevul was never just real estate. Land was covenant made visible — each family’s plot a physical share in the promise to Abraham, passed down as inheritance, never to be permanently sold. To walk your boundary line was to walk the edges of what God had entrusted to your name.
The verb is וְהִרְבִּיתָ (vehirbita), the causative form of רָבָה (rabah, H7235) — ‘to make much, to multiply.’ The same root fills Genesis: be fruitful and MULTIPLY; I will MULTIPLY your descendants. Jabez asks God to do to his ground what God had promised to do to Abraham’s family. Note carefully what enlargement meant in that world: more territory was more to farm, more to defend, more households to shelter, more responsibility before God. Nobody in ancient Judah framed a bigger gevul on the wall. They worked it.

ANCIENT TRUTH
In Israel, enlarged borders meant enlarged answerability — more field edges owed to the poor, more wells shared, a wider perimeter held before God in trust.
The question that sorts trophy from assignment fits any asset: who else eats from this? A border with no one else inside it has already begun to close in on its owner.
MODERN APPLICATION
Your territory is denominated differently — a role, a home, a skill set, savings, influence, margin — but the covenant physics have not changed: every square foot of it is entrusted, not titled.

The Corners of the Field
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Ruth gleaned the corners of Boaz’s field under exactly this law — and Boaz’s line, recorded two chapters before Jabez in this same book (1 Chronicles 2:11-12), runs straight to David.
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure. The lines of my boundary have fallen in pleasant places; surely my inheritance is delightful.

The psalmist’s gratitude in surveyor’s language — and notice verse 5: before the pleasant boundary lines, the LORD Himself is the portion. The ground is delightful because of who allotted it.

Survey honestly: is the new stability in your life currently functioning as a trophy or an assignment — and what is the evidence?
Today's Practice: Learning the Prayer by Heart
Scripture memory, using the prayer’s own architecture. Jabez’s prayer is four petitions — memorize it as four rooms rather than one string of words.
Room one
“If only You would bless me” — say it while opening one hand.
Room two
“and enlarge my territory” — say it while opening the other.
Room three
“May Your hand be with me” — both hands open, palms up.
Room four
“and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain” — hands to heart. Then the ledger’s answer, out loud: “And God granted the request of Jabez.” Walk the four rooms three times today — morning, midday, night — and the prayer will be yours by heart before the week ends.

(gratitude)LORD, the lines have fallen for me in pleasant places, and I have hardly stopped to walk them. Thank You for every square foot of this season — the ground I asked for in the lean years and now stand on almost casually. Guard me from the quiet re-titling; my hands did not make this. Enlarge my borders, and enlarge them as assignment: more edges for the gleaners, more seats at the table, more of Yours passing through mine. You are my portion before any of it — and after all of it. Amen.

For the Chronicler’s first readers — families returned from exile — what did praying ‘enlarge my border’ (gevul) most nearly mean?
A Voice From the Story
Judah after the exile — most likely the 400s-300s BC
The anonymous compiler of 1 and 2 Chronicles, writing for the fragile community rebuilding Jerusalem. Where Kings had explained the catastrophe, the Chronicler wrote for the morning after it — retelling Israel’s whole story to convince the returned remnant that they were still the covenant people, their land claims still stood, and their God still answered. He is the editor who chose to stop the genealogy for Jabez.
For everything comes from You, and from Your own hand we have given to You. (1 Chronicles 29:14, from David’s prayer, preserved by the Chronicler)
LESSON FOR US
The Chronicler kept the nation’s land records and its prayer records in the same book — territory and trust were never separate ledgers.
