Give the servants their due: everything about their offer is admirable. They noticed the weeds early. They went to the owner instead of acting alone. They asked before pulling. And their proposal is the most reasonable sentence in the parable: do you want us to go and pull them up? It is loyal, energetic, protective of the wheat, and aimed at the enemy’s work. If you had been standing in that field, you would have raised your hand too.

Which is exactly why the Master’s answer lands like cold water: No.

Be honest about how strange that is. Yesterday’s verses established that the weeds are real, hostile, and deliberately planted. Nobody in this story is confused about whether darnel is bad. And still the owner refuses the one action that every instinct — agricultural, moral, religious — demands. He does not deny the problem. He denies the servants the solution.

You know this itch from the inside, because it is the most spiritual-feeling impulse you own. The person poisoning your church: surely naming and expelling them is service. The corrupt leader, the toxic relative, the online enemy of everything good: surely zeal against them is zeal for God. The servants’ offer is the ancestor of every purge, every crusade, every write-off ever launched in the Owner’s name — and before we can hear why He says No, we have to feel how sincerely we would have made the offer. Today is the day the week gets personal: not because you have weeds, but because you have a sickle, and you have been assuming the Owner meant for you to use it.

The Master gives one reason aloud, and the parable’s details supply two more. Take them in order.

The stated reason: entangled roots. If you pull the weeds now, you might uproot the wheat with them. In a real field this is simple mechanics — darnel and wheat, sown together, root together; yank one and soil, roots, and neighboring stalks come up in the same fist. In the field of persons the mechanics are truer still. Lives are root-tangled: households, churches, friendships, histories. There is no surgical strike against a human being. Every purge in history has advertised precision and harvested wheat by the armful — ask anyone who grew up in a church split that was going to finally purify the fellowship, or a movement that ate its own founders in the name of cleanness.

The first unstated reason: the servants cannot tell. Yesterday’s botany returns with force. Darnel is wheat’s near-twin until the heads form — and heads form only at the season’s end. The servants proposing the weeding are the workers least equipped to perform it, not because they are wicked but because the information does not exist yet. All week the parable has been drawing this line quietly: identification is a harvest-time skill, and it belongs to harvest-time workers.

The second unstated reason: the timing is load-bearing. Until the harvest is not a delay tacked onto the plan; it IS the plan. Even Psalm 1 — Scripture’s starkest sorting poem, the righteous tree against the wind-blown chaff — ends not with the righteous doing the sorting but with this: the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous. The Old Testament’s own two-ways theology reserves the final telling-apart for God. The Master’s No is that reservation, spoken into a field.

And underneath all three reasons, the verb glows. Let both grow — aphete. Matthew’s forgiveness word, conjugated as farm policy. The No to the servants is not the Owner going soft on darnel. It is the Owner running His field the way He runs His pardon: absorbing the cost of evil’s presence, for a season, on purpose, with his eyes open, for the sake of what can still be saved.

The early church, reading this parable in centuries when it had every reason to want a sickle, heard something deeper under the Master’s No — a hint the text leaves half-buried until you remember who is telling it.

John Chrysostom, preaching through Matthew in the fourth century, put it plainly: “Either He means this, If you are to take up arms, and to kill the heretics, many of the saints also must needs be overthrown with them; or that of the very tares it is likely that many may change and become wheat. If therefore ye root them up beforehand, you injure that which is to become wheat, slaying some, in whom there is yet room for change and improvement.” Read that second clause again. In a real field, darnel is darnel until it dies. In THIS field, the tares can change kind. Chrysostom pressed the point to its edge — and kept both edges: “So long as they stand by the wheat, we must spare them, for it is possible for them even to become wheat; but when they have departed, having profited nothing, then of necessity the inexorable punishment will overtake them.” The door stands open, and the door closes: mercy with a deadline is still mercy — and still a deadline.

Augustine, a generation later, said it with a preacher’s economy: “I say this to the evil, who yet are Christians; I say this to the tares. For they are in the field; and it may so be, that they who to-day are tares, may to-morrow be wheat.” And when a rigorist movement in North Africa demanded a purified church NOW — a field with the mixture already removed — Augustine answered from this same image: the Lord’s threshing-floor “must needs contain, up to the time of the final winnowing, both grain which is to be stored in the garner, and chaff that is to be burned up with fire.”

Here, then, is the reason under the reasons. The Master’s No is not resignation about evil; it is ambition for it. Every season the field stays mixed is a season the darnel is being given to defect. The patience that scandalizes the servants is aimed precisely at the stalks they wanted to burn — which means the uprooting they offered would not merely have cost some wheat. It would have foreclosed every future conversion in the field. Say it in church-history terms: a sickle taken to the field in the late 1740s harvests a young slave-trading sailor named John Newton as darnel, and no one ever sings Amazing Grace.

Be honest about the record, too: the church has not always listened to its own fathers here. The same centuries that copied out Chrysostom’s homily also built inquisitions; the parable’s No has been read aloud by people sharpening sickles. That is not a reason to soften the text. It is the reason to keep it sharp: every generation’s servants make the same reasonable offer, and the Master’s answer has not changed.

The servants’ offer comes in three modern models. Check your shed for each.

The write-off. Somewhere in your life is a person you have harvested early — filed as darnel, verdict closed. The parable does not ask you to trust them, excuse them, or restore what wisdom fences off. It asks you to reopen one file: the future. Chrysostom’s clause — room for change and improvement — is the actual policy of the field’s Owner, not a sentimentality. Practically: take the person you have most finally written off and pray for them once today as possible wheat. You are not declaring them safe. You are declaring the season unfinished.

The purity search. Some believers spend years church-shopping for a field with no darnel — leaving each congregation at the first sighting of hypocrisy, certain the clean field exists one move away. The parable closes that road gently: both grow together until the harvest is the condition of every field this side of the barn. A church with visible weeds is not a failed church; it is a described one. (Discernment survives this — Jesus will teach confronting a brother privately in chapter 18, and shepherds still guard flocks. Between correction and uprooting there is a canyon, and the No applies to the canyon’s far side.)

The self-purge. Strangest of all: some of us run the servants’ program inward — despairing over the darnel in our own chest, trying to rip out in a weekend what God is patiently outgrowing in us over years, concluding after each failure that the whole field of the self is lost. Hear the No spoken over your own soil too. Someone extended you the season you are refusing yourself; the same aphete that pardons your debts is letting your field grow. The goal was never a weedless you by Friday. It is wheat, at harvest, by grace.

One discipline serves all three: when the itch comes — and it will come today — convert it. The energy that wants to pull is real energy; the Master simply redirects its verb. Water something. Encourage something. Confront, if you must, the way chapter 18 teaches. But leave the sickle on the wall. It was never missing from the field’s plan; it is scheduled.
