The New Testament hands the fieldhand three working texts. Together they cover the day shift.

The first governs your blessings: Matthew 5:45, the indiscriminate sun. Practically, it means your kindness is not a verdict and does not need to wait for one. You can feed, help, greet, pray for, and do good to people whose row you deeply distrust, because your Father has been doing exactly that since this morning’s sunrise — and doing it does not make Him naive, and will not make you complicit. The fieldhand blesses like weather.

The second governs your wounds: Romans 12:19. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. Notice Paul’s verb: the wrath is reserved, never denied. Vengeance has an Owner, and the verse’s mercy is in its logistics: you are invited to LEAVE ROOM — to physically vacate the judge’s bench, the way you would step back from someone else’s desk. Your rage at real evil is not sinful energy; it is misdelivered mail. Forward it.

The third governs your verdicts: 1 Corinthians 4:5. Judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. There it is again — the parable’s whole epistemology in apostolic prose. The information you would need to sort the field does not exist yet on the surface of the earth; it is filed under hearts, and the Lord opens that file at the appointed time, not before. Every verdict you pass today is passed blind.

Sun for the blessings, forwarding for the wounds, patience for the verdicts. It is a complete uniform — and notice what it is not: none of it is passivity. All three texts are addressed to people actively farming a contested field. Which raises today’s hardest distinction, and the church’s most expensive confusion.

Here is where this day must be careful, because ‘put down the sickle’ can curdle into something Jesus never taught: a field with no fences, no shepherds, and no word ever spoken against the wolf.

Hold the distinction firmly: correction is fieldwork; uprooting is harvest-work. Five chapters after our parable, Jesus gives the fieldwork manual: if your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately — then two or three witnesses, then the community (Matthew 18). Confrontation, accountability, even a hard parting of ways are all inside the fieldhand’s job description. What is not in it is the eschatological act: the final verdict on a soul, the burning verdict, the this-one-is-darnel-forever verdict. Between telling your brother the truth and telling him his eternal classification runs a canyon, and the parable’s No applies to the far side only. A church that disciplines is farming; a church that damns is harvesting early — and so is a heart.

Spurgeon, preaching on the wheat and the tares, refused both errors in one breath. He would not pretend the mixture away: “It is of little use to try to escape from them, for the tares are permitted in God’s providence to grow with the wheat, and they will do so until the end.” Permitted — in providence — until the end: realism about the weeds, patience about the timing, and not a syllable of license to swing early.

And beneath the distinction stands its living proof. The Sower Himself worked this field as a fieldhand. Jesus of Nazareth ate with tax collectors and notorious sinners — watered rows His critics had long since classified as darnel — and was despised precisely for His indiscriminate table. And when evil closed in on Him in an olive grove, with legions of angel-harvesters a single word away, He did not call for the early harvest. He absorbed the field’s evil into His own body instead. The cross is what it looks like when the Owner of the field, wronged beyond any wrong you have suffered, leaves room — and the empty tomb is what His kind of patience harvests. Every instruction in today’s reading was first obeyed by the One who gave it, at a price that makes our sickle-surrender look small.

One more thing about the fieldhand’s uniform, before Munich: it is the most public argument the church owns. The watching world has seen religious sickles for two thousand years and is unimpressed; it has categories for crusades, purges, and holy contempt, and files them under power. What it has no category for is a community that blesses the rows that curse it — that feeds enemies, forwards its grievances upward, and keeps loving people whose classification it deeply doubts. That behavior is unexplainable without the parable behind it: a real harvest, really coming, really not ours. Fieldhand patience is the church saying, with its hands, that it actually believes verse 39 — loudly, and without going quiet about evil. Every act of indiscriminate sunshine is apologetics.

Which brings us to a church in Munich, in 1947, where all of this stopped being theology for one Dutch woman in a single outstretched second.

Turn the uniform into a Thursday. Four practices, one per working text and one for the canyon.

Bless one distrusted row. Choose a person whose classification you are privately certain of, and do them one concrete, undeserved good this week — the coffee, the recommendation, the genuine greeting, the prayer for their flourishing. Not as a verdict of innocence; as weather. You are not saying they are wheat. You are saying your Father’s sun is not yours to redirect.

Forward the mail. Take your sharpest live grievance — the one with a face — and process it Romans-12 style, on paper if you can: write what was done, write what you want done about it, and then, above the whole page, write the forwarding address: VENGEANCE IS MINE; I WILL REPAY, SAYS THE LORD. Leaving room transfers the collection to the only Agency with full records and clean hands — the debt stays fully real.

Recall one blind verdict. Somewhere you have judged before the appointed time — sorted a person by their surface while their motives sat sealed under a heart you cannot read. First Corinthians 4:5 does not ask you to conclude they are good; it asks you to admit the file is closed to you. Say it about them, out loud, once: I do not have access. It is astonishing what that sentence does to a grudge.

And keep the canyon marked. If there is a confrontation you owe — a brother to be told the truth privately, a boundary wisdom requires, a wolf the flock needs naming — do the fieldwork; the parable never forbade it. Just check the tool in your hand before you go: correction carries a shepherd’s crook and hopes to win a brother. Uprooting carries a sickle and hopes to end one. If what you are planning would feel satisfied by the person’s destruction rather than their restoration, you have wandered to the canyon’s far side, and the No still stands.

We began with the frustrated question of the mixed-field worker: what am I supposed to DO all day?

Now the day shift is over, and look what it held. Sun raised on every row, including the ones you distrust. Wounds forwarded to the only Agency with clean hands. Verdicts left sealed in files you cannot read. Fieldwork done with a crook, not a sickle. Nothing about that list is passive; it is the busiest kind of day — it is simply a day spent farming instead of judging.

And here is the quiet discovery waiting at sundown: you did not sort a single soul today, and the kingdom did not fall. The field is not less safe because you left the harvest to the harvesters; it is safer — your row got watered, your enemy got sun, your grievance got forwarded, and the only Judge with access to hearts stayed on schedule. And notice, finally, what the day did to the watching rows around you. Nobody in your field can explain a worker who blesses without sorting; they have seen every kind of sickle and have no file for weather. Your strangest testimony this season may simply be your job description, performed.

Tomorrow the week turns to the ending — stubble, barn, and the righteous shining like the sun the Father has been raising all along. Tonight, rest like a fieldhand: tools down, verdicts filed, weather trusted.
