The Great Commission doesn’t ask if you’ll go — it assumes it. The question isn’t whether you’re sent, but whether you’ll walk in the sending.
The Great Commission uses a participle form (‘having gone’ or ‘as you go’) — suggesting that the going is assumed. It’s not ‘if you go’ but ‘as you go, make disciples.’ The anointing puts you in motion.

Jesus’ final words to His disciples are not a suggestion — they’re a commission. Go. Make disciples. Baptize. Teach. And the promise that makes it all possible: ‘I am with you always, to the end of the age.’
The anointing you’ve received this week is not a private possession. It’s a public assignment. Paul put it bluntly in Romans 10: ‘How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’
Your anointed feet are beautiful because they carry the gospel to people who need it.
John 20 captures the most intimate commissioning in all of Scripture. The risen Jesus appears to His frightened disciples, breathes on them, and says: ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.’ The breath of Christ — the same breath that spoke creation into existence — is the breath that sends you into the world.
You’re not going alone. You’re going as one who has been chosen, empowered, trained, and healed. Now go.

The Quiet Revival
A college student didn’t have a dramatic testimony. She hadn’t been rescued from addiction or pulled back from the edge. She just quietly showed up — for people.
When a lonely classmate sat alone at lunch, she sat down across from him. When a friend’s mother passed away, she drove two hours just to sit in silence. When a freshman looked lost on the first day, she walked them to class.
She never preached a sermon. But years later, three of those people told her the same thing: ‘You’re the reason I believe God is real.’
She had led a quiet revival — not with words, but with anointed presence.
The anointing to go doesn’t always look like preaching from a stage. Sometimes it looks like sitting across from someone who needs to know they’re not alone.
The Breath of Commission
There’s a breathtaking detail in John 20:21-22 that changes everything about how we understand the Great Commission. Jesus doesn’t just tell His disciples to go — He breathes on them. The Greek word is ‘emphysao’ — and it appears only one other time in the Greek Bible: Genesis 2:7, when God breathes life into Adam. The same divine breath that animated the first human is the breath Jesus uses to commission His disciples. This isn’t a casual exhalation. It’s a re-creation. Jesus is saying: ‘I am making you new, and in that newness, I am sending you.’ The commission and the empowerment arrive in the same breath. And notice the framing: ‘As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.’ Your sending is patterned after Jesus’ own sending. He was sent to love, to heal, to proclaim, to lay down His life. Your anointing carries the same pattern. You are not sent to perform. You are sent to love as you have been loved.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
John 20 takes place on the evening of Resurrection Sunday. The disciples are locked in a room, terrified. Jesus appears, shows His wounds, and commissions them. The sending comes not from a position of strength but from a place of fear transformed by the risen Christ.
The word ‘emphysao’ (to breathe upon) in John 20:22 is the same word used in the Greek translation of Genesis 2:7 — God breathing life into Adam. Jesus’ commissioning breath is nothing less than a new creation moment.

Jesus breathed on His disciples — echoing God’s breath in Genesis — and sent them into the world with the same anointing the Father had given Him.
The early church didn’t wait for perfect circumstances. They went — into persecution, across cultures, through suffering — carrying the anointing wherever their feet landed.
MODERN APPLICATION
Your anointing is complete: chosen, empowered, trained in hiddenness, healed. Now the question isn’t ‘Am I ready?’ but ‘Who is in front of me right now that needs the gospel in action?’
