Even If He Does Not

For five days we have walked with Daniel and his friends through a foreign court that wanted to own them. Today the series comes to rest on three short sentences spoken at the mouth of a furnace, because everything Daniel’s faithfulness means is folded into them.

Nebuchadnezzar has built a golden statue and demanded that everyone fall down before it. Three young men – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – will not. Hauled before a furious king, given one last chance, they answer: “If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”

Hear the shape of it. First they confess God’s power: He is able. Then they refuse to make that power a condition: but even if He does not. They will not strike a deal where obedience is the down payment and rescue is the guaranteed return. They obey because of who God is, not because of what He will do for them. That is the whole heart of faithfulness, and it is the note this series has been climbing toward since day one.

Years later, in a different empire, an old man named Daniel learns that a new law has been signed: for thirty days, no one may pray to anyone but the king. The penalty is the lions’ den. Daniel is the second most powerful man in Persia. He could close his shutters. He could pray in the dark, silently, where no one would know.

Instead the text says he went into his house, where the windows of his upper room opened toward Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Four words carry the weight: just as before. The law changed nothing about how Daniel prayed, because his prayer was never a performance for the watching court. It was a daily turning of the body toward a city he had not seen in seventy years, toward a God who had not stopped being God when Jerusalem fell.

He is not picking a fight. He is not posting his defiance. He simply keeps the rhythm he has always kept, and lets the cost fall where it falls. The faithfulness of day six is the faithfulness of day three wearing an old man’s knees.

Hebrew exiles in Babylon, given Babylonian names and Babylonian educations, raised to serve a king who demanded worship. Daniel’s three companions are remembered for a single refusal: at the mouth of a furnace they declined to bow to the golden statue, confessing that God is able to deliver them – and that they would obey Him even if He chose not to. They walked into the fire and were met there by a fourth figure, and walked out without the smell of smoke on them.
