A future, written into exile

For four days this week we have walked with the prophet who could not stop crying. Jeremiah said it plainly: “Oh, that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night over the slain daughter of my people” (Jeremiah 9:1). He had been called as a young man, told God had put His words in his mouth, and then made to preach a message no one wanted: the city will fall, the Temple will burn, Judah is going to Babylon in chains. He was beaten for it, thrown in a cistern for it, called a traitor for it. The tears were not weakness. They were the cost of telling the truth to people who loved the lie.

Now comes the strangest turn in the whole book. The exiles are already gone, dragged 900 miles east to Babylon, and false prophets there are promising a quick rescue – pack light, it will all be over in two years. Jeremiah, still back in Jerusalem, writes them a letter. And the letter does not say what grief usually wants to say. It does not say, hold on, you’ll be home soon. It says the opposite. Build houses. Plant gardens. Marry, have children, let your children marry. Settle in. You will be there seventy years. Then, into that long sentence, God drops the line a thousand devotionals have lifted out of context: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.”

Here is what we usually miss. That promise is not whispered to a person on a good day. It is mailed to a refugee camp. It is God’s word to people who have lost their country, their Temple, their certainty that He was even on their side – and what He gives them is not a fast exit but an acharit, an after, and a tikvah, a cord to hold while the after takes its time arriving.

During the Second World War, more than a hundred thousand people of Japanese descent on the American West Coast were forced from their homes and held behind wire in remote camps – Manzanar, Tule Lake, Heart Mountain. They had committed no crime. They lost businesses, farms, neighbors, years.

And in the dust of those camps, people planted gardens. At Manzanar, where the wind never stopped and the ground was hard alkaline desert, internees hauled rock and rerouted water and built ponds, stone bridges, and gardens that visitors still walk through today. They were not pretending they were free. They knew exactly where they were. But they refused to let the camp have the last word about whether life was worth tending while they waited.

That is almost exactly what God tells the exiles to do. Not ‘pretend Babylon is home.’ Not ‘give up because Babylon is not home.’ Something harder and braver than either: live – really live – in the place you did not choose, because the God who sent you there has not finished writing your story.

Called as a young man in Judah’s final decades, Jeremiah was given the unbearable task of announcing Jerusalem’s fall and the Babylonian exile to a people who refused to hear it. He was beaten, imprisoned, lowered into a muddy cistern, and branded a traitor – yet he kept speaking, and kept weeping. His grief was not despair; it was love that would not look away. In chapter 29 the same prophet who wept over the city’s ruin writes the exiles their truest comfort: a future and a hope, on the far side of seventy years.
