voice, sound
The Greek word phōnē refers to a voice or sound. It’s where we get the English word ‘telephone’ – literally ‘far-off voice.’ The word emphasizes the personal, recognizable quality of the shepherd’s call to his sheep.
In John 10, Jesus uses shepherd imagery to describe His relationship with believers. Just as sheep learn to recognize their own shepherd’s unique call, believers learn to distinguish Christ’s voice from all others.
RELATED
“God’s voice is loving, true, and freeing – and will never contradict Scripture.
In Jesus’ time, shepherds often had unique calls for their sheep. Multiple flocks could mingle, but each sheep learned to perk up only at the sound of its own shepherd. Jesus used this imagery in John 10 to describe how His followers recognize His voice.
Just as you instantly know the voice of a loved one on the phone, the more you are acquainted with what Jesus’ voice sounds like, the quicker you will discern His voice in the noise of this life. He speaks primarily through His Word and the Holy Spirit’s gentle promptings in our hearts.
In a noisy world, many voices claim our attention – cultural messages, inner fears, even the enemy’s lies. But God’s voice is loving, true, and freeing, whereas the enemy’s voice brings lies and condemnation. Most importantly, God’s voice will never contradict Scripture.
The Modern Sheep's Dilemma
Ava sat in her dorm room surrounded by advice blogs, social media feeds, and well-meaning friends all telling her how to live her life. When she faced a major decision about her summer internship, the cacophony of opinions left her more confused than ever.
One friend said, ‘Follow your heart.’ Another insisted, ‘Think of your résumé.’ Her parents had their own expectations.
Ava realized she’d been listening to everyone except God. In desperation, one evening she turned off her phone, opened her Bible, and prayed, ‘God, speak to me.’
In the stillness that followed, a gentle thought surfaced – reminding her of Jesus’ promise: ‘Seek first the kingdom of God.’ It wasn’t an audible voice, but a verse she had heard in church, now echoing in her heart. In that quiet moment, Ava recognized God’s voice speaking through Scripture to her anxious mind.
Ava’s experience illustrates how we often listen to every voice except God’s, and how returning to Scripture in stillness helps us recognize His voice.
The Contemporary Challenge: Competing Voices
Marcus worked in a startup where everyone had opinions about the company’s direction. Investors wanted growth, employees wanted stability, customers wanted innovation. The noise was deafening. But the real challenge wasn’t external – it was internal. Marcus realized he’d been listening to fear (What if I fail?), pride (I need to prove myself), and comparison (Everyone else seems to have it figured out) more than he’d been listening to God. The breakthrough came when he started each day asking, ‘God, what is Your voice saying about today?’ instead of immediately checking his phone for everyone else’s voices.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
In ancient Israel, shepherds sometimes gave each sheep a name and could call them individually. The sheep would respond to their own name spoken in the familiar voice of their shepherd. Jesus likewise said, ‘He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out’ (John 10:3).
“The Greek word φωνή (phōnē) is where we get the English word ‘telephone’ – literally ‘far-off voice.’ Alexander Graham Bell’s invention was about transmitting voice over distance, but Jesus has already bridged the greatest distance: ‘My sheep hear My voice… and they follow Me.’
BRIDGE TO CHRIST
ANCIENT TRUTH
Sheep in Jesus’ time recognized their shepherd’s unique voice among many flocks.
“The more time we spend with Jesus – in His Word and prayer – the more familiar His voice becomes, just as sheep grow to know their shepherd.
MODERN APPLICATION
In our world of endless notifications, competing opinions, and information overload, we must learn to recognize God’s voice above all the noise.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
At Jesus’ Transfiguration, the Father said, ‘Listen to Him!’ (Mark 9:7). Recognizing God’s voice leads to obedient action, not just a warm feeling.
HONEST-EXAMINATION
How attuned are you to recognizing Jesus’ voice amid all the noise around you?

The Boy Who Learned to Listen
Young Samuel heard God’s voice but didn’t recognize it until Eli guided him. His progression from confusion to clarity reminds us that learning to discern God’s voice often requires mentorship, patience, and the willingness to learn from our mistakes.
“Speak, for your servant is listening.
LESSON FOR US
Recognizing God’s voice is a skill that develops over time with practice, guidance from mature believers, and a posture of humble listening.
