And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would bless me and enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.

vayyave Elohim et asher-sha'al — "and God brought about what he asked"
The last five Hebrew words of the Jabez account. Everything the week has been building toward hangs on them.

to ask, to request, to inquire of
Jabez did not earn, bargain, or perform. The verb the Chronicler chose is the ordinary word a child uses when asking a parent for bread. Whatever came next came as an answer, never as a wage.
Watch the grant clause: the verb וַיָּבֵא (vayyave) is the causative form of בּוֹא (bo, “to come”) — literally, God CAUSED TO COME what Jabez asked. Hebrew could have said God “heard” or “accepted” the prayer. Instead it names God as the one who carries the answer into the world. The prayer requests; God transports.

ANCIENT TRUTH
Jabez addressed a covenant Person with a thousand-year record — he called TO the God of Israel, and God carried the answer into his life.
A request aimed at an outcome rises or falls with the outcome. A request aimed at a Person can be answered, delayed, or refused — and the relationship holds either way. That difference is the difference between prayer and superstition.
MODERN APPLICATION
We tend to address outcomes. We pray at the job offer, at the diagnosis, at the mortgage approval — and treat God as the machinery between us and the result.

What the Genealogy Quietly Confesses
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Ancient genealogies established legal standing — land, inheritance, priesthood. Breaking one to record an answered prayer tells the reader what the Chronicler believed actually secures a future.
For all the promises of God are ”Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, our “Amen” is spoken to the glory of God.

Paul, defending his own changed travel plans, reaches for the deepest ground he has: God’s plans do not waver, because every promise was already secured in Christ.
REFLECT
Think of the most recent prayer God has clearly answered in your life. When you tell that story — to yourself or to others — who is the subject of the sentence: your faith, or His faithfulness?
Today's Practice: Open Hands
A prayer posture older than words — the body preaching to the soul.

Kneel or sit. Make two fists. Hold in them, deliberately, the answered prayers you have been gripping — the new stability, the things you are afraid to lose. Name them one by one.
Open
Turn your hands palm-up and open them. Say: You brought these. You carried them here. They were never held up by my grip.
Receive
Stay with open hands for one minute of silence. End with the words of the verse: and God brought about what he asked.
Prayer
(centering)God of Israel, I have spent years checking my words when I should have been trusting Your hands. Thank You for every answer You have carried into my life — including the ones that arrived wearing disguises, and the ones still in transit. Teach me to tell the story of this season with You as the subject of every sentence. I asked; You brought. Keep me from turning Your grace back into my technique. Through Jesus, who was refused in the garden so that I would never be turned away. Amen.

Mother of Augustine of Hippo. She prayed for her wandering son for years, following him from Thagaste to Carthage and finally to Milan, where she saw him baptized by Ambrose at Easter, 387.
