The American Standard’s literal rendering keeps the old word — sorrow — where this week began. Today the prayer’s last two petitions close the circle.

Jabez does not ask for a wall, a weapon, or a guarantee. He asks for a hand — Yours, with me. Of all four petitions this is the most intimate: not an outcome but an accompaniment. Whatever ground the enlarged border covers, he wants it walked in company.

Now the honesty the deep dive owes you. English versions say “keep me from harm,” but there is no Hebrew verb ‘keep’ in this clause. The verb is עָשָׂה (asah) — the ordinary word for do, make, work: literally, “that You would ACT from harm.” Jabez asks for a working God, not a fence. (The great keeping-word, שָׁמַר shamar, does appear in the blessing Israel memorized — “The Lord bless thee and KEEP thee,” Numbers 6:24 — and we will pray it before the day ends.) And the final word, לְבִלְתִּי עָצְבִּי (levilti otsbi), is built on עצב — the very root scrambled into the name Jabez. The prayer’s last word is his own name, being unmade.

ANCIENT TRUTH

Jabez asked for an accompanying hand and a working God — presence upstream of harm, not a static fence around his ground.

Keep the tools; relocate the trust. Planning guards the gift. Only the Keeper guards you — and only that second keeping can put the 3 a.m. patrol off duty.

MODERN APPLICATION

We buy the fences: insurance, contingency funds, monitoring, backups. Good tools — and terrible gods. A fence-based peace is only ever as strong as its weakest breach point, and the heart knows it.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Translational honesty note: the mainstream rendering (‘that it may not grieve me’) follows the older versions and most modern committees; the WEB’s causative reading is a legitimate minority understanding of the same consonants.

The blessing God commanded Aaron to put on the people — the shamar-keeping Jabez’s prayer reaches toward, given to Israel as a gift to be spoken over one another.

1824-1907, Scotland and the New Hebrides (Vanuatu)

A Glasgow city missionary who sailed for the New Hebrides in 1858 against all advice. He buried his wife Mary and infant son on Tanna within his first year, survived repeated attempts on his life, escaped in 1862, and returned to the neighboring island of Aniwa — which, over decades, turned to Christ almost entirely. His autobiography, edited by his brother James (1889), carried the story of those islands around the world.
