Peter asks how many times he has to forgive, and offers seven. Jesus gives him a number nobody can keep. Day 1 begins the week with the question we ask when the same person hurts us again, and with a count that is meant to be lost.

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Jesus has just taught his followers how to win back a brother who sins. Peter asks the next question, the one people ask when the first hurt has turned into the fifth.
Peter asks a fair question. Someone close to him keeps wronging him, and he wants to know where the limit is. He offers a number: up to seven times?
Seven sounds generous. The Bible often uses seven for completeness, so Peter may think he is offering all there is to give.
Jesus does not take the number. In the King James Version he says, Until seventy times seven. Some Bibles print seventy-seven. The Greek can be read either way, and the answer is the same. Stop counting. If you have been told to just forgive, this week does not mean that, and the Deep Dive says so plainly.
Notice what the count does for Peter. A limit protects him. Once it is full he is free to stop, and everyone would call that fair. Jesus takes the limit away and puts a story in its place, the story we read all week.
Last week a goat carried a nation’s guilt out into the wilderness. This week asks what we do with what other people owe us.
REFLECT
Do this today: think of the person you have gone over most this month. Write down, as a rough number, how many times you have replayed what they did. You are not asked to let it go yet. Look at how much counting is going on. If this person frightens you, do not do this exercise alone. Tell someone you trust, and see the numbers at the end of today.
A Short Prayer
Lord, You know the name I was thinking of, and You know how often I have gone over it. I do not want to pretend it did not hurt. Show me what I am holding, and teach me this week how to put it down. Amen.
IN YOUR OWN WORDS
Peter’s question comes straight after a lesson. In Matthew 18:15 Jesus says that if your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he will not listen, take one or two others. If he still refuses, bring it to the church. That is a process, and Peter hears it as one. He wants to know what happens when the process keeps having to be used.
Some readers hear a limit of three behind Peter’s seven. The Talmud has two sayings about threes. One says God forgives a sin three times and not a fourth, citing Amos 2:6, where the Lord says, For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I will not revoke My judgment. The other says a person need not ask his friend’s pardon more than three times. Neither says how often the wronged must forgive, and both were written down long after Peter. The Law itself says, in Leviticus 19:18, Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge. So we do not know what number Peter had in mind. We know only that seven sounded like a lot.
Most of us keep a count of some kind. We may never say it aloud. This is the third time. I have given them every chance. I will not be made a fool of again. A count is how a hurt person tries to stay safe and stay fair at once.
Noticing is not the sin. If someone keeps taking your pay, you should notice, and you should say so. Jesus has just told Peter to go and say so. That first step is for a brother who sins. It is not a rule that puts you alone with someone who frightens you, controls you or has hurt you badly. If that is your case, do not go alone. Go to someone who can protect you, or to the authorities. A count becomes a problem when it turns into the reason you will not let go, long after the saying is done.
Peter calls the man my brother. Matthew 18 is about people who belong to each other, like a family or a congregation. The question is hardest there, because the person may be someone you will see again. Whether you stay near them is a separate question, and Day 4 takes it up.
Jesus does not call the counting stupid, and he says it cannot be where this ends. Whatever else forgiveness is, it is not a quantity that runs out.
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
Genesis 4:23-24 (BSB)
Lamech is a descendant of Cain, the first killer. In his short poem he boasts to his wives about what he did to a man who hurt him.
Lamech’s speech in Genesis 4 is a boast about revenge. I have slain a man for wounding me, he says, a young man for striking me. A wound and a blow were answered with a death.
Then he sets his number beside God’s. Earlier in the chapter the Lord protected Cain with a mark and said that if anyone slew Cain, Cain would be avenged sevenfold. Lamech takes that figure and multiplies it. If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.
Now go back to Peter. Peter says seven. Jesus answers with a phrase that, in Greek, is Lamech’s number, and many readers hear him turning it the other way.
The match is exact in the Greek. The old Greek translation of Genesis 4:24 uses two words for Lamech’s number, and Matthew 18:22 uses the same two words. The Hebrew in Genesis is plain: seventy and seven, which is seventy-seven. The Greek phrase can also be read as seventy times seven, which is why the King James Version prints it that way. Careful readers have chosen each one. Either way the sense is no limit.
Jesus does not name Lamech, and Matthew does not quote Genesis. The echo is one that many readers hear, and nobody can prove it was meant. It fits what the whole Bible does with Lamech’s kind of anger. The anger that multiplied revenge is met by a mercy that multiplies pardon.
The first killing in the Bible is between brothers. In Genesis 4:8 Cain kills Abel. By Lamech the story has grown. A wound is enough to kill for, and he is proud of it. He sets his own protection above the one God gave Cain. That is where revenge leads when nobody stops it.
The Old Testament has its own words for the other road. In Isaiah 55:7 the Lord says he will freely pardon. The Hebrew behind those words says that he multiplies to forgive. It points the same direction.
Peter asks for a limit. Jesus gives him a number nobody can keep.
Remoulding the Law
Tertullian was a Christian writer in North Africa. About the year 200 he wrote a short book on prayer, and in it he comments on Peter’s question. Jesus answered as he did, Tertullian says, in order to remould the Law for the better. Here are his words. “And when Peter had put the question whether remission were to be granted to a brother seven times, ‘Nay,’ saith He, ‘seventy-seven times;’ in order to remould the Law for the better;” Then he gives his reason. “…because in Genesis vengeance was assigned ‘seven times’ in the case of Cain, but in that of Lamech ‘seventy-seven times.’” He read Jesus as turning Lamech’s number around, as we have. His contrast of old Law and new mercy was common in his day, and the Law itself already taught the other road: Leviticus 19:17-18, Isaiah 55:7, and the seventh-year release we read tomorrow. Augustine, a bishop in North Africa, preached on the same verse and told his hearers to do their own arithmetic. “Now reckon up how often thy brother hath sinned against thee. If thou canst reach the seventy-eighth fault, so as to get beyond the seventy times seven, then set about revenge.” He knew nobody could.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Tertullian lived in Carthage and wrote in Latin. The words are from his book On Prayer, chapter 7, in an English edition published in 1885.
Many people have been told to forgive by someone who wanted the subject closed. Just forgive and move on. Said that way, the word sounds like an order to swallow the hurt and keep quiet. If that is what the word has come to mean for you, we understand why you hesitate.
This week uses the word differently, and it will say so plainly. Forgiveness is a decision to release a person from a debt they owe you, and to leave the judging to God. It is a decision and not a feeling, so it does not need you to feel warm toward anyone. It can wait until you are safe and ready. It also does not ask you to call the wrong right.
Day 4 spells out what forgiveness is not. It is not approval of what was done. It is not pretending the hurt was small. It is not forgetting, and it does not remove the consequences. It does not hand someone back your trust at once. If you are in danger from a person right now, the first step is your safety, and Day 4 says where to find help.
The week is built the way Jesus built his answer. He did not give Peter a rule about how to feel. He told a story about two debts, one huge and one small. The huge one comes first. A person who has been forgiven the larger debt is in a different place to face the smaller one. That is the claim of the week: forgiven people become forgiving people.
There is a reason Jesus talks about debt. A debt is something owed, something that can be counted, and something a person can choose to stop collecting. That is how a hurt feels. You were wronged, so you are owed an apology, a repair, an acknowledgement. Forgiveness is the decision not to collect it yourself.
Day 2 meets the man who owes ten thousand talents, a sum so large it is almost a joke. Day 3 is the turn: the same man will not release a hundred denarii. Day 4 draws the lines around forgiveness and tells the truth about trust. Day 5 is the prayer Jesus taught, which has the same two debts inside it. Day 6 gathers the week, and Day 7 rests in a psalm.
Peter’s question was a real one. A man who keeps being wronged has a right to ask how long. Jesus’ answer leaves his pain real and takes the counting off his shoulders.
The Letters in the Drawer
Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch Christian who spent her later life telling people about forgiveness. She is best known for hiding Jewish families during the Second World War and for surviving a concentration camp. This story is about something smaller, and nearer to most of us. She told it herself, in a magazine article in 1972.
Some friends whom she loved and trusted had done something that hurt her. She did not say what. She forgave them, she thought, and then she lay awake for weeks going over it.
In 1970 an American friend came to visit her in Holland. After he met the people involved, he asked her a question. “Aren’t those the friends who let you down?”
She said it was all forgiven. “By you, yes,” he answered. “But what about them? Have they accepted your forgiveness?”
They had not. “They say there’s nothing to forgive! They deny it ever happened. But I can prove it!” she told him.
She went to her desk. She had kept all their letters. “I have it in black and white!” she said.
Her friend slipped his arm through hers and gently closed the drawer. “Aren’t you the one whose sins are at the bottom of the sea? And are the sins of your friends etched in black and white?”
For a moment she could not speak. Then she prayed, and asked to be forgiven for keeping the evidence against others. That night she fed the letters into her little coal-burning grate. “As the flames leaped and glowed,” she wrote, “so did my heart.”
She had forgiven, she thought, and kept the proof. The drawer was a count. When her friend asked, the friends were still saying there was nothing to forgive, and her story does not say that anything was mended. The burning happened anyway. A caution: these were letters between friends, and she kept them to prove a point. A record kept for your safety is a different thing. If someone has hurt you, or says they did not, keep dated records, copies and messages, and show them to a counselor, an advocate, a doctor or a lawyer. Forgiving a person never asks you to destroy evidence.
Where This Sits in the Story
ANCIENT TRUTH
Today we are in the MINISTRY of Jesus. He is teaching his followers how the kingdom of heaven works among people who wrong each other.
Lamech counted to repay. Peter counted to set a limit. Corrie kept her count in a drawer. Jesus takes the counting away and puts a story in its place, and the story begins with a king who wants to settle accounts. Day 2 starts there.
MODERN APPLICATION
Most of us keep a count: the third time, the last straw, one more chance. It protects us, and it keeps the hurt in front of us.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Luke 17:4 says that even if a brother sins against you seven times in a day, you must forgive him. Day 4 reads it beside Luke 17:3, which says to rebuke him first.

Where do you keep your count: in your head, in a drawer, or in the way you speak to that person?
A Practice for Today
The count lives in the body as well as the mind. This practice takes about three minutes. If you are driving, keep your hands on the wheel and only breathe along. If saying the name feels unsafe, skip that step. Breathing the two lines alone is a complete practice. If the first line is not yet yours, breathe I could stop counting instead. If you are keeping records for your safety, keep them.

Today ends at a question and a number that will not stay put. Peter wanted to know the limit. Jesus told him there is none.
Some of us hear that as a heavy thing. It can sound like a promise that we will be hurt forever and be asked to smile. That is not what the rest of the chapter says. The next words are a story about a king who wanted to settle accounts, and the first man in it is the one who owes.
Tomorrow we meet him. He owes more than he can ever repay, and the king does something nobody expects.
For today, keep one small thing. You wrote down a rough number this morning. Look at it once more tonight. It is the number of times you have gone back to the hurt. Nobody is asking you to be done with it by bedtime, or by the end of the week.
If the person you thought of is someone you are afraid of, tell somebody you trust today. Safety comes first, and forgiveness can wait. In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1 800 799 7233, and you can text START to 88788. In immediate danger, call 911. Day 4 says more.
If the person you thought of is gone, or has died, the question is still yours. A debt that cannot be collected can still be carried. This week is as much for that kind of hurt as for any other.
Prayer
Father, You have been patient with me far more than seven times. I have a count of my own, and I have kept it carefully. I do not want to hide it from You. Show me whom I am counting against, and why I find it so hard to stop. Where I was hurt, let that be seen and not waved away. Where I have been keeping a record, help me close the drawer. Teach me to forgive as You forgave me. Amen.

Peter was one of the first men Jesus called, and the one who spoke up most often. Matthew shows him asking this question after hearing Jesus teach about a brother who sins. Later in the Gospels Peter needs forgiving himself, and gets it.

FOR DEEPER STUDY
Greek: aphiemi (ἀφίημι, G863) is the verb in Matthew 18:21, 27, 32 and 35 and in Matthew 6:12, 14 and 15. It means to send away or let go, and the sense of forgive comes from its use. The noun aphesis (G859) does not appear in these chapters. Matthew 18:27 has two verbs for the king: apoluo (ἀπολύω, G630), he released him, and aphiemi, he forgave him the loan (daneion, δάνειον, G1156). Peter’s phrase in verse 21 is heos heptakis (ἕως ἑπτάκις), up to seven times. Jesus’ answer is heos hebdomekontakis hepta (ἕως ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά), which can be read seventy-seven times or seventy times seven. The BSB, NIV and ESV print seventy-seven, and the NIV and ESV footnote seventy times seven. The KJV, ASV, WEB, YLT, Darby and BBE print seventy times seven. Hebrew: Genesis 4:24 reads shiv’im weshiv’ah (שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה), seventy and seven; the old Greek translation of Genesis 4:24 has the same two Greek words as Matthew 18:22. No formula marks Matthew 18:22 as a quotation, and Jesus does not name Lamech. The Hebrew verb in Isaiah 55:7 is yarbeh lislo’ach (יַרְבֶּה לִסְלוֹחַ), he multiplies to forgive. A 2026 article proposes that Daniel 9:24 (seventy sevens) is also echoed in Matthew 18:22; that is a minority proposal and the series does not rest on it. The Talmud: Yoma 86b records a saying of Rabbi Yosei bar Yehuda that God forgives a transgression three times and not a fourth, citing Amos 2:6 and Job 33:29. Yoma 87a says a person need not ask his friend’s pardon more than three times, citing Genesis 50:17. Both texts were written down long after the Gospels. The Hebrew sources say nothing about whether Peter knew them. Notes on the story. Corrie ten Boom’s account is first-person, written about two years after the 1970 visit; no other witness is known.
