That God calls it qashti, My bow, is the heart of it. The instrument of judgment is taken up by God Himself and laid down, its arc bent away from the world.

When the same word appears in 1 Samuel 18:4, it is the bow Jonathan gives David; in Psalm 7:12 it is the bow God bends against the wicked. In Genesis 9 the warrior’s bow is set down in the sky, its arc turned upward, the string toward heaven – a weapon aimed away from the earth it once threatened.

A covenant sign does no work – it carries a promise. The rainbow holds back no rain; it holds a pledge before our eyes, so that in the next storm we remember the bow is laid down.

A Weapon Hung in the Sky, Pointing Up

Read the Hebrew and the picture sharpens. The word God uses for the rainbow is qeshet – the war-bow, the archer’s weapon. It is the same word for the bow that kills in battle. God says, “I have set My bow in the clouds.” The clouds are the very thing that carried the flood; the bow is the very thing that carries death. And the arc of a rainbow runs the opposite way a bow is drawn: the curve faces down toward earth, the string-line toward heaven. A drawn bow points its arrow at the target. This bow’s arc is turned away from the world, its line of fire aimed at the heavens, at God Himself. That is what a covenant of grace looks like before the cross even arrives. The instrument of judgment is taken up by the Judge and laid down, pointed away from the guilty and back toward Himself. If the bow must ever be fired again, the arrow’s path runs toward the One who hung it there. Centuries later, on a hill outside Jerusalem, it was. And notice who keeps the covenant. God names no condition for Noah – no “if you obey.” Five times in nine verses God says “I establish,” “I set,” “I will remember.” The whole weight of the promise rests on the one who made it. This is the kind of covenant God will make again with Abraham, and again, finally, in the blood of His Son: a promise God keeps from both sides, because the other side cannot.
