So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the robe of many colors he was wearing—and they took him and threw him into the pit. Now the pit was empty, with no water in it… Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay a hand on him; for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And they agreed. So when the Midianite traders passed by, his brothers pulled Joseph out of the pit and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

ketonet (H3801): a tunic, a long shirt-like garment worn next to the skin; passim (H6446): possibly “colorful” or “reaching the extremities”

The verb vayyaphshitu – “they stripped him” – is violent and bare. The first thing the brothers do is undress him: they take off the sign of love before they take his freedom. The robe goes before the body does.

The phrase appears again in only one other place in Scripture: the robe Tamar wears in 2 Samuel 13:18, described as the garment worn by the virgin daughters of the king. So the ketonet passim is not a work coat – it is royal, set-apart clothing. Jacob dresses one son like a prince in front of ten sons who herd the flocks. The robe is the wound before a word is ever spoken.

The Wound Was Sewn Before It Was Spoken

The hatred came before the dreams. Joseph’s brothers did not turn on him because God was speaking through him; they turned on him because their father had already taught them, with a coat, that Joseph mattered more.

Genesis 37 opens quietly, with a genealogy line and a teenager. “When Joseph was seventeen years old, he was tending the flock with his brothers… and he brought their father a bad report about them.” Three sentences in, the trouble is already laid out. There is a favored son, ten unfavored sons, and a father who cannot keep his love evenly distributed.

Then the text does something deliberate. “Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons, because Joseph had been born to him in his old age; so he made him a robe of many colors.” The favoritism is not hidden in Jacob’s heart. He stitches it into a garment and puts it on the boy’s shoulders, where ten brothers have to look at it every morning. “When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”

Notice the order. The hatred comes before the dreams. We tend to remember Joseph as the boy who couldn’t stop talking about his visions, and the dreams certainly pour fuel on the fire. But Scripture is careful: the brothers hated him because of the robe first. The dreams – the sheaves bowing, the sun and moon and eleven stars bowing – arrive into a household that is already poisoned. By the time Joseph says “my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to mine,” the brothers are not hearing prophecy. They are hearing the favored one rub it in.

This is the peshat, the plain sense, and it is painfully ordinary. A family is torn apart not by some grand evil but by partiality, envy, and a coat. The greatest betrayal in Genesis grows out of the most common soil in the world: a parent who plays favorites and children who keep score.

The Brother Who Drove Him to the Station

I know two brothers who haven’t spoken in eleven years. The break did not come over money or marriage or the things you’d expect. It came over a kitchen table, the family one, the one their mother left behind. One brother assumed it was his. The other had already loaded it into a truck.

What stunned everyone was how fast a lifetime of shared rooms and shared jokes turned to silence. They had built forts together. One had driven the other to the train station every August for college. And then a table sat between them, and neither would move it, and the years simply closed over the gap.

This is how betrayal usually works. Not in a single cinematic moment, but in a slow accumulation of small unfair things, until one day someone does what cannot be undone. Joseph’s brothers did not wake up planning murder. They woke up resentful, the way they had woken up resentful for years, and then he came walking toward them across the field in that coat, alone, and the resentment found a chance. “Here comes that dreamer,” they said. The cruelty was practiced before it was acted. It usually is.

Betrayal rarely arrives as a stranger. It is almost always a brother – someone who knew us, who shared a table, in whom resentment had been quietly hardening for a long time.

Twenty Pieces of Silver and an Empty Pit

Watch the brothers move, step by step, because the text slows down to let us. First they plot to kill him: “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. We can say that a vicious animal has devoured him.” Reuben, the oldest, flinches and buys time: “Do not shed his blood. Throw him into this pit.” So they strip the robe and drop him into a cistern – and here Scripture adds a detail it did not have to add: “Now the pit was empty, with no water in it.” Then comes the line that turns brothers into traffickers. “And as they sat down to eat a meal” – they sat down to eat, with Joseph in the pit below them – “they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites.” Judah does the math out loud: “What profit will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let us sell him.” Twenty shekels of silver. The price, under the law that would later be given, of a slave (Exodus 21:32). They turned their own flesh into a transaction and went back to their meal. Here is the thing the chapter forces you to sit with: God does not appear. There is no voice from heaven, no intervention, no rescue. The brothers carry out their evil completely and get away with it completely. They dip the robe in goat’s blood, send it to their father, and watch him break: “It is my son’s robe! A vicious animal has devoured him.” Jacob tears his clothes – the same verb, in a sense, as the stripping of Joseph – and refuses to be comforted. The chapter ends in a lie believed and a father in sackcloth, with the only true word buried in a single line: “Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt.” Meanwhile. While the family grieves a death that did not happen, God is already moving the favored son toward the place he will one day save them from famine. The silence is not absence. The pit is empty of water, but it is not empty of God.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

A cistern (bor) in the ancient Near East was a bell-shaped pit cut into rock to collect rainwater – narrow at the top, wide below, impossible to climb out of. An empty cistern was a known makeshift prison; Jeremiah would later be lowered into one and sink in the mud (Jeremiah 38:6). Twenty shekels of silver was a real, ordinary price – Leviticus 27:5 sets it as the valuation of a male between five and twenty years old. The brothers did not undervalue Joseph in their rage; they sold him at market rate, which is somehow worse.

Genesis 37 never once mentions God. Not in the dreams, not in the pit, not in the sale, not in the grief. It is one of the few chapters in Genesis where the LORD is entirely silent. Yet the narrator quietly tells us in 50:20 what was happening the whole time: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” The God absent from the dialogue of chapter 37 turns out to be the author of the whole arc.

ANCIENT TRUTH

The pattern set here – a beloved son, hated without cause, sold for silver, handed over by his own, descending so that others might be saved – is one Scripture returns to again and again. Joseph is the first clear sketch of it. Psalm 105:17-18 looks back and says God “sent a man before them – Joseph, sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with shackles.” Sent. The brothers thought they were getting rid of him; God was sending him ahead.

MODERN APPLICATION

Most of us will never be sold into slavery, but most of us know what it is to be wounded by the people closest to us – a sibling, a parent, a friend, a spouse – and to find heaven apparently silent while it happens. Genesis 37 refuses to pretend that betrayal is rare or that God always interrupts it. He often does not. What it promises instead is that the silence is not the end of the sentence.

NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

The shape of Joseph’s story finds its fullness in Christ. Like Joseph, Jesus is the beloved Son (Matthew 3:17) who “came to His own, and His own did not receive Him” (John 1:11). Like Joseph, He is handed over by one of His own twelve for silver – and Judah, the brother who proposes the sale here, gives his very name to Judas, who proposes the next one for thirty pieces (Matthew 26:14-16). Like Joseph, Jesus is stripped of His robe (John 19:23-24), descends into the pit of death, and is raised to the place of power – where, like Joseph before his brothers, He holds the lives of those who betrayed Him and says not vengeance but mercy: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good, to accomplish… the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20).

I bring You the wounds I carry from people who were supposed to love me, and the silence I have blamed You for. Where I am Joseph – betrayed, stripped, sold – help me believe that You are still steering, even when You say nothing. Where I am the brother – resentful, keeping score, dressing my grievance as justice – soften me before I do what cannot be undone. Teach me, like the Son who was sold for silver, to answer betrayal not with vengeance but with the slow miracle of mercy. Amen.
