The same word that promises Abraham descendants ‘as numerous as the stars’ (Genesis 15:5) is the word spoken here over the serpent. From the very first promise, the seed of the woman is set against the seed of the snake – two lines, one war, running through the whole of Scripture.
Zera is a collective noun. In Hebrew it can mean an entire line of descendants or one specific descendant, and the form does not tell you which. Genesis 3:15 leaves that door open on purpose: there will be a seed of the woman. Whether the promise lands on a people or on a person, the text does not yet say.

The very first thing God says after the fall is not a sentence written against us but a promise written for us – a seed is coming who will undo the serpent’s work.
We are still on the third page of the Bible, and the world is already broken. Adam has hidden. Eve has hidden. The ground is about to push back against the hands that work it. A relationship that was once naked and unashamed has put on the first clothing made of blame.
And into that wreckage God speaks. Watch the order. He turns to the serpent first – before the woman, before the man – and what He says is not only a curse. Folded inside it is a promise: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Readers since the early centuries of the church have called this verse the protoevangelium – the first gospel, the gospel before the Gospel. It arrives buried in a sentence spoken against a snake, but its weight points all the way forward to a hill outside Jerusalem. The ancient world told cosmic-combat stories like this constantly: a hero-god crushing a serpent of chaos to bring the world to order. Genesis takes that familiar shape and rewrites every part of it. The serpent is not a rival god; he is a creature, made by the same hands he now resists. The hero is not a storm-god; he is a descendant of the woman, born into the very family the snake has just wounded. And the victory will not come without cost. The one who crushes the head will first take a strike to the heel.
The Promise My Mother Made at the Door
When I was small and afraid of the dark, my mother had a habit I did not understand until much later. She would not promise that nothing in the house would ever frighten me again. She would promise, instead, that she would come. “If you call,” she would say, standing in the doorway with the hall light behind her, “I will come, every time.” It was not a promise that the fear was unreal. It was a promise that something stronger than the fear was already on its way.
That is what God hands the human race on its worst day. He does not pretend the wound is unreal; the curses that follow are heavy and true. But before any of them lands fully, He gives a word: a seed is coming. Whatever hisses at you in the dark – and it will – there is One on the way whose heel is already set toward the serpent’s head.
The protoevangelium works the way a parent’s promise works in the dark: spoken before the long night, it holds everything that follows, because the One who gave it always comes.
One Word, Three Movements
Hold the whole arc of the Bible against this one verse and it lays out in three movements. First, it is announced. In Eden, into the rubble of the fall, God says there will be a seed of the woman who crushes the serpent’s head. Nothing is fulfilled yet; a word is simply planted, like the seed it names. Second, it is accomplished. Paul tells the Galatians the promises were spoken “to Abraham and to his seed… meaning One, who is Christ” (Galatians 3:16), and that “when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman” (Galatians 4:4). Born of a woman – the exact shape of the Eden promise. At the cross the serpent strikes the heel: Christ is wounded, and dies. Yet Hebrews says it was precisely “by His death” that He destroyed “him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14). The strike to the heel was the very blow that crushed the head, and the cross became His public triumph over the powers (Colossians 2:15). Third, it is completed. Paul tells the Romans, “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20) – same verb, same enemy, but now the crushing reaches all the way down into ordinary lives. What began in a garden, and was won on a cross, is still finishing in us, and will be finished when He comes.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Genesis stands at the head of the Torah, the foundation Israel read everything else against. The promise of an offspring runs as a spine through the whole book – to Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob, to Judah – and on through David’s line, until the New Testament writers gather every thread of ‘seed’ into one name. Genesis 3:15 is where that thread is first tied.
John names the dragon of his vision “that ancient serpent called the devil and Satan” (Revelation 12:9; 20:2). The last book of the Bible reaches back to the first to name the enemy – the same serpent of Eden, finally crushed. Scripture opens and closes on the same villain, and the same victory.
BRIDGE TO CHRIST
ANCIENT TRUTH
Into the curse spoken over the serpent, God hides the first promise of rescue: a seed of the woman who will crush the serpent’s head, while taking a wound to his own heel in the doing of it.
The thread runs the whole length of Scripture – from the seed promised to Abraham, through Judah and David, to a child born of a virgin. Paul gathers every strand and says it was always pointing to ‘One, who is Christ’ (Galatians 3:16). The garden planted the seed; the cross is where it bore its fruit.
MODERN APPLICATION
You do not have to feel the victory to stand on the promise. On the days the serpent is loudest – the old accusation, the familiar shame, the voice that says nothing will ever change – the gospel does not begin with your strength against him. It begins with a word God spoke over your head before you were born, and a heel already set against the snake.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
What Eden promised, the cross accomplished. John points at Jesus and says, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). The serpent struck His heel; by that very wound He crushed the serpent’s head, “that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death” (Hebrews 2:14). The first gospel and the finished gospel are one promise, kept.

Where is the serpent loudest in your life right now – and what would change if you answered him not with your own strength, but with the promise of the seed who has already crushed his head?

Father, give me eyes to see the Gospel even where I expect only a curse. Teach me that Your first word over my fall was a promise, not a sentence. Where the serpent still hisses in my thoughts today – accusation, shame, the quiet despair that says nothing will change – let me hear instead the older voice of Eden: a seed is coming, and His heel has already done the work. Crush what hates me. Keep what loves me. Hold me in the promise on the days I cannot feel the victory. In the name of Jesus, the long-promised Seed of the woman, who was wounded that the serpent might be undone. Amen.
TAKEAWAY
Today, when the familiar accusing voice starts – the shame, the old script that says you are beyond changing – answer it once, out loud or under your breath, with the promise instead of your own defense: a seed has come, and the serpent’s head is already crushed. Let the word God spoke first be the word you speak back.

Read the rest of the chapter slowly. Notice that the promise of verse 15 comes before the curses on the woman and the man, and before the exile from the garden. The hope is spoken first.
The Mother of All the Living
The first woman, drawn from Adam’s side and given to him as a companion. Deceived by the serpent, she ate, and gave to her husband. Yet it is her ‘seed’ – her offspring – that God names as the serpent’s undoing. In the same chapter where she falls, Adam names her Eve, ‘because she would be the mother of all the living’ (Genesis 3:20) – a name given in hope on the day of judgment, because the One who would crush the serpent would come through her line.

LESSON FOR US
God’s first promise of rescue runs straight through the one the serpent thought he had won. Where the enemy works his deepest damage, God plants His deepest hope – and He often brings the remedy through the very place the wound was made.
