chayah: to live, to revive, to be made alive again

The narrator spends no words on wonder. Four quick verbs – touched, lived, stood, feet – and the scene is over. The restraint is the point: life from the grave is reported as plainly as a sunrise.

Qum is the verb that runs under the whole resurrection hope of Scripture. Elisha himself used it earlier – when he raised the Shunammite’s son he sent word, “Arise” (qum), and later spoke of the boy he had “restored to life” (2 Kings 8:1). The same root will one day be spoken over a little girl: Talitha koum – “Little girl, arise.”

The Hands That Kept Working

The miracle is not memory outliving a man. It is life itself lodged in a man so deeply that death could not empty him of it – which is exactly the hope the gospel will make personal.

The Miracle With No Audience and No Sermon

Every other Elisha miracle has a setting and a meaning attached. The oil teaches that God fills empty vessels. The Shunammite’s son teaches that God hears the desperate. Naaman teaches that pride must stoop to be washed. The chariots of fire teach that the unseen armies of God outnumber the seen armies of men. Each one comes with a lesson the reader is meant to carry away. The last one comes with nothing. No prophet present to pray. No grieving mother to comfort. No watching crowd to be amazed. No word spoken over the body. The men who throw the corpse in are not even trying to do something holy – they are running from raiders and need the hole. The miracle happens by accident, to a stranger we never meet again, and the narrator moves on to the next king as though nothing remarkable occurred. That strangeness is the gift. A miracle stripped of every human cause – no faith, no prayer, no merit, no ceremony – leaves only one thing standing in the frame: the sheer, unkillable life of the God whose name Elisha carried. When everything human is subtracted, what remains is the bare fact that contact with the life of God raises the dead. The reader is left holding a promise the prophet never explained, because it was never finally about the prophet.

If your influence outlived you the way Elisha’s did, what would actually pass through the contact – your accomplishments, or the life of God in you?

1. Elisha spent decades handing life to others and then could not keep it for himself. Where are you afraid of what will happen when your own strength finally runs out?
2. The man in the tomb was raised by nearness, not by anything he did. Where in your life have you been trying to earn what can only be received by contact with God?
3. Jehoash wept ‘My father, my father’ at a deathbed. Who has carried the life of God to you – and have you told them?

TAKEAWAY

This week, stop measuring your life by what you can leave behind, and start measuring it by Who you are near. Spend ten unhurried minutes a day simply close to God in His Word and in prayer – not to produce anything, but to be filled with the life that outlasts you.
