When the prophets stack mishpat and tzedaqah together it is shorthand for a whole social order put right – the orphan defended, the poor not cheated at the gate, the honest scale. It is what God is, and so it is what God will not negotiate away for a louder song.

Amos sets these two words against water imagery. Mishpat is to roll on like a river – the Hebrew nachal eitan names a wadi that does not run dry in summer, a stream that keeps flowing when the seasonal ones have failed. Israel’s worship was loud and seasonal; God asks for the justice that never stops.

Worship can become the very thing that lets us not hear the people we are wronging. Amos names that: God will not accept a song that drowns out a cry.

The River That Never Runs Dry

Stand at the center of the chapter and watch what God does. He clears the room. “Take away from Me the noise of your songs.” The harps go quiet. And into that cleared silence He sets one image: “But let justice roll on like a river, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Notice the word He chooses for the stream. Most wadis in Israel are seasonal – torrents in the rains, dry beds by summer. Amos picks nachal eitan, the ever-flowing stream, the one channel that still runs when the others are dust. That is the contrast in a single Hebrew phrase: Israel’s worship was seasonal, swelling at the festivals and gone in between, while the justice God wants is the river that never stops, watering the widow and the foreigner on an ordinary Tuesday. And here Hosea hands us the key that unlocks all three prophets: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” The Hebrew is even sharper than it sounds – to know God, in Hosea, is not information but intimacy, the same verb used for the closeness of a marriage. You cannot truly know a God who defends the poor and go on trampling them. The knowledge of God and the doing of justice are the same fabric; pull one thread and the other comes apart. This is why ritual could never substitute. The offering says “I will give You something instead of myself.” God answers, through three prophets, that He will not be bought off with anything – not rams, not oil rivers, not even a firstborn. He wants the worshiper. He wants you actually known by Him and actually just toward your neighbor, which turn out to be one wanting, not two.
