Hezekiah’s Reform — Day 6 — Deeper Dive

Hezekiah is the rare good king. The writer of 2 Kings does not hedge: “Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. No king of Judah was like him, either before him or after him” (18:5). He tore down the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and broke into pieces the bronze serpent Moses had made in the wilderness, because the people had turned a relic of God’s mercy into an idol and were burning incense to it. He called it Nehushtan – a mere bronze thing – and destroyed it. This is a man whose reform reached even the souvenirs of faith.

Then Assyria came. Sennacherib, the most powerful man on earth, took the fortified cities of Judah one by one and finally sent his officers to stand outside Jerusalem’s wall and shout. The field commander, the Rabshakeh, deliberately spoke in Hebrew so every soldier on the wall could understand him. His speech is a masterpiece of intimidation. He mocks Hezekiah’s reforms, mocks Egypt, mocks the very idea of trust: “Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD” (18:30). And then the line that gives the whole chapter its theological weight: “Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered his land from my hand? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?” (18:35). The LORD has been filed away with the wooden gods of Hamath and Arpad – one more local deity about to be added to Assyria’s collection.

What Hezekiah does next is the center of the story. He receives a follow-up letter repeating the threat in writing. He does not call a war council. He goes up to the house of the LORD, and he spreads the letter out before the LORD (19:14). The most powerful king in the world has put his contempt for God in writing, and the king of a tiny besieged city unrolls that contempt on the temple floor and asks God to read it for Himself.

A friend told me about the night she got the biopsy results. She had read them in the car before she got home – the dense paragraph, the word she did not recognize, then the word she did. She said she carried the paper inside, and instead of hiding it or rereading it forty more times, she laid it flat on the kitchen table and called her husband over, and they just looked at it together. “I didn’t want to face it alone in my head,” she said. “I wanted it out where someone bigger than my fear could see it too.”

There is a difference between worrying about a threat and naming it in front of someone you trust. Worry keeps the letter folded in your pocket, where you can take it out a hundred times a day and reread the worst line. Faith takes the same letter and lays it open on the table.

Hezekiah could have memorized the Rabshakeh’s taunts and let them loop in the dark. Instead he physically carried the threat into the presence of God and put it down flat, every line showing. The threat did not get smaller on the temple floor. But it was no longer his alone to answer.

Thirteenth king of Judah, son of Ahaz, who reigned roughly 715-686 BC. Of him alone among Judah’s kings it is said that he trusted the LORD so wholly that ‘no king of Judah was like him, either before him or after him.’ He purged idolatry down to the souvenirs, smashing even Moses’ bronze serpent when it became an idol. When Assyria’s empire closed around Jerusalem and mocked his God by name, Hezekiah’s instinct was not strategy but worship: he carried the threat into the temple and laid it open before God.
