The Fire You Cannot Hold In

By the time we reach chapter 20, Jeremiah has been preaching for years, and it has cost him everything but his life. He has been beaten. He has been put in the stocks overnight by a priest named Pashhur, locked in a public frame by the upper gate of the temple so the whole city could file past and jeer at the man who keeps saying their city will fall. He comes out of that night and prays the rawest words a prophet ever prayed.

He accuses God. “You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived.” The verb is strong; it is the word used for seducing or enticing. Jeremiah feels lured into a calling that has ruined him – as if God had courted him with promises and then handed him a life no one would choose. At his commissioning years earlier he had been told, “I am with you to deliver you” (1:8). What he actually received was mockery “all day long.” Twice in two verses that phrase repeats – all day long, all day long – the sound of a man who can no longer remember a morning that did not begin with derision. The promise and the experience will not line up, and he says so to God’s face. He does not pretend the math works.

So he decides to quit. Not to disbelieve – to stop speaking. “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name.” It is a reasonable resignation. If the message brings only reproach, stop delivering it. Go silent. Save what is left of your life. Anyone who has been wounded for telling the truth understands the logic exactly – the quiet calculation that the only way to stop the bleeding is to stop opening the wound. Jeremiah makes that calculation. And then verse 9 tells us what happened when he tried to live by it.

A friend of mine spent a decade as a nurse on a palliative ward. She was good at it in a way that cost her – she stayed in rooms most people hurried out of, sat with the dying when their families could not bear to, learned the names of people who had three days left. After her own mother died on a ward like hers, she wrote a resignation letter. She told me she meant it. She was done absorbing other people’s last hours. She had nothing left to give and good reasons to stop.

The letter sat in her bag for two weeks. She kept not handing it in. One afternoon a man on her ward, frightened and alone, gripped her wrist and asked her not to leave, and she stayed past the end of her shift, and somewhere in those quiet hours she understood she was not going to send the letter. “I tried to put it down,” she said. “I couldn’t. It was already in me.”

She was not romanticizing it. She knew exactly what it took out of her. She simply found that the thing she most wanted to quit was the thing she could not stop being.

A priest from Anathoth, called by God before birth (1:5) and sent to warn Jerusalem in the last forty years before Babylon destroyed it. He was beaten, imprisoned, put in the stocks, thrown into a cistern, and accused of treason for telling the truth – yet he never stopped delivering the word, even as he wept over the people who refused it. His most violent prayers and deepest doubts are preserved alongside his oracles, which is why he is remembered not as the angry prophet but as the weeping one.
