Set Apart Before You Were Born

Jeremiah’s whole life is decided before he says a word. Before the prophet is old enough to argue, God speaks over him a sentence with no gaps for negotiation: I knew you, I set you apart, I appointed you. The verbs all belong to God. Jeremiah is the object of every one of them.

So the young man does the only thing left to him. He objects anyway. “I surely do not know how to speak, for I am only a child.” It is not false modesty. The prophets he has heard of were towering figures – Moses, Samuel, Elijah. He is a boy from Anathoth, a priest’s son from a village a few miles outside Jerusalem, and the job is to stand in front of kings and tell them their world is ending. Anyone honest would flinch.

God does not flatter him out of the fear. He does not tell Jeremiah he is more capable than he thinks. He reroutes the whole question. “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ For to everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak.” The call was never about Jeremiah’s qualifications. It was about who was sending him. Then God reaches out, touches his mouth, and says the line that settles it: “I have put My words in your mouth.” The prophet’s competence is no longer the issue. The words are not his to produce. They are placed there, like something handed across a table.

There is a kind of work a person does not choose so much as fail to escape. A nurse I knew kept a job on a ward that broke her heart weekly. She came home hollow. She talked, more than once, about quitting for something kinder. She never did. “I keep walking back in,” she told me, “because I can’t get the faces out of my head when I try to leave.”

Jeremiah lived inside that ache for forty years, and he wrote it down without flattering himself. Deep into his ministry, after beatings and a night in the stocks, he turns on God in chapter 20 with words most people only think: “You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived… I am a laughingstock all day long.” He decides he is done. He will never speak in that name again. And then comes the line that names the whole prophetic life: “His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.”

The word God placed in his mouth in chapter 1 will not stay swallowed. He cannot quit, not because he is brave, but because the call is heavier than his despair. That is what it looks like when God puts His words in someone’s mouth and means it.

A priest’s son from the village of Anathoth, just outside Jerusalem, called by God around 627 BC while still young. For roughly forty years Jeremiah preached repentance to a Judah that would not turn, through the reigns of its last kings and into the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon in 586 BC. He was beaten, imprisoned, lowered into a muddy cistern, and ridiculed – yet kept speaking because the word God had put in his mouth was a fire he could not hold in. His laments are so raw that Scripture’s whole grammar of grief borrows his name.
