The Name You Were Not Given

Most prophets were given words to say. Hosea was given a marriage to live. The very first thing the LORD does through him is not a speech but a wedding: “Go, take a prostitute as your wife and have children of adultery.” The reason is laid bare in the same sentence – the land is “flagrantly prostituting itself by departing from the LORD.” Israel has been unfaithful, and rather than describe it from a safe distance, God asks one man to feel it in his own house.

This is the northern kingdom in its last comfortable years, under Jeroboam II – trade routes humming, borders quiet, idols tended on the high places. From the outside, things looked fine. Hosea’s job is to make the inside visible. So he marries Gomer, and the children come, and each one is handed a name that is really an indictment. Jezreel, for a valley soaked in blood. Lo-ruhamah, Not Pitied. And then the third, the one that lands hardest: Lo-ammi, Not My People.

Hear what that name unsays. From the burning bush onward, the covenant had one heartbeat: I will be your God, and you will be My people. That promise is the floor everything else stands on. And here God pulls the floor out. He names a child the opposite of the promise and makes Hosea carry that name through the streets. The marriage was the sermon, and the sermon was about how it feels to be betrayed by the one you bound yourself to.

A friend who fosters children told me about the day a boy arrived at her door with a single trash bag of clothes and a folder of paperwork. On the intake form, under the line for the child’s status, someone had typed a phrase – the bureaucratic words for a child no one has claimed. She said she couldn’t stop looking at it. A real boy, seven years old, holding a juice box, summed up in a word that meant nobody’s.

She told me she made a quiet decision standing in that doorway. She would not let the word on the form be the truest thing about him. It would describe where he had been. It would not name where he was going.

That is something like what God does in Hosea, except the order is reversed and the stakes are eternal. He lets the hardest name be spoken first – Not My People – out loud, on the record, with witnesses. He does not soften it. And then, before the ink is even dry, He says the name will not hold. Where it was said “you are not My people,” there they will be called sons of the living God.

The LORD’s first word to him was not a speech but a command to marry Gomer, an unfaithful woman, and to name their children for judgment – Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah (Not Pitied), and Lo-ammi (Not My People). His own home became the living picture of a God betrayed by the people He had bound Himself to, and of a love that would not let the betrayal be the end.
