The Mercy You Resent

By Day 4 of this story the impossible has happened. Jonah walked into Nineveh – the capital of Assyria, the empire that would soon grind Israel into exile – and preached the shortest, bleakest sermon in the Bible: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.” No altar call. No grace clause. Eight Hebrew words. And the whole city repents, from the king on his throne down to the cattle in their stalls. “And the Ninevites believed God.” It is the most successful revival any prophet ever preached.

And it breaks Jonah. “When God saw their actions – that they had turned from their evil ways – He relented from the disaster He had threatened to bring upon them. Jonah, however, was greatly displeased, and he became angry.” The Hebrew is stronger than our English: it says the relenting was, to Jonah, a great evil. The thing that saved a hundred thousand people felt to him like a catastrophe.

Then comes the confession that the entire book has been hiding. Jonah did not run from Nineveh because he was afraid. He ran because he was afraid he would succeed. “I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion – One who relents from sending disaster.” He fled to Tarshish precisely because he believed the creed. He knew God would forgive the enemy if the enemy turned. He could not bear to be the instrument of that mercy.

A pastor I trust once told me about a man in his congregation who kept a list. Not a grocery list – a list of people he hoped God would not let into heaven. He never wrote it down. It lived in the back of his head, behind the prayers. The drunk driver who killed his brother. A business partner who walked away clean. A man on the news whose face he could not stop hating.

He was a faithful man. He gave, he served, he could quote the verse about loving your enemies. But there was a fence in his soul, and on the far side of it he had quietly filed the people he believed grace should skip. He was not asking God to be unjust. He was asking God to be just – to them – and merciful to him.

What finally undid him, he said, was reading Jonah and realizing he was not the sailor crying out, and not the repentant Ninevite. He was the prophet on the hill outside the city, furious that the wrong people got forgiven. He had been praying, for years, that God would be less like Himself.

Sent to preach to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, he fled in the opposite direction – not from fear of failure, but from fear of success. He knew God would forgive the enemy, and he could not bear it. Even after his own rescue from the deep, his heart toward Nineveh never visibly softened. The book leaves him on a hillside, angry, with God’s last question hanging over him unanswered.
