Hosea, Joel, Amos — Day 7 — Sabbath

Today the reading gathers three prophets at once, and at first they sound like thunder. Hosea marries a faithless wife so that Israel can hear how it feels to be loved by Someone you keep betraying. Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa, walks north into the wealthy cities and tears the roof off their comfortable religion: the festivals are full, the songs are loud, and the poor are being sold for a pair of sandals. Joel watches a plague of locusts strip the land bare and reads it as a warning of a greater day coming. Three men, three eras, one verdict – the people have wandered, and the Day of the LORD is near.

It would be easy to file these books under judgment and move on. But listen longer and a second sound comes through the thunder. Hosea, even while naming the betrayal, breaks open: ‘How could I give you up, O Ephraim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred’ (Hosea 11:8). Amos, after pages of ruin, ends with God promising to rebuild the fallen tent of David until the mountains drip with sweet wine (Amos 9:11-13). And Joel, in the middle of the locust-stripped land, hears God say something no prophet had dared promise so widely before: ‘I will pour out My Spirit on all people.’

That is the thread that runs under all three. The judgment is real – these books do not soften it. But underneath the judgment runs a stubborn intention to heal, to rebuild, to pour out. The prophets are not finally announcing the end. They are announcing what God means to do on the other side of it.

A friend of mine kept a small garden on a city balcony, four pots in a row. Through a dry August she carried a watering can out every evening, tipping it carefully so each plant got its measured share – never quite enough to soak the soil, because the can held only so much. The plants survived. They did not thrive.

Then one night a real storm came in off the coast. She stood at the window and watched water come down in sheets, far more than she could ever have carried, running off the edge of the balcony, filling every pot to overflowing, soaking ground she had been rationing for weeks. In the morning the four plants looked different – heavier, greener, the soil dark all the way down.

For most of the Old Testament, the Spirit of God comes like the watering can: poured by measure, on a few, for a task. The Spirit rushes on Samson, rests on the seventy elders, falls on a prophet, anoints a king. Real, but rationed. Joel stands in the dry land and promises the storm. Not a measured share for a chosen few – a downpour on all flesh, sons and daughters, old and young, servants alongside masters, until the ground is dark all the way down.

Joel son of Pethuel prophesied to Judah, reading a devastating locust plague as a sign of the nearing Day of the LORD and calling the people to return to God with fasting and torn hearts rather than torn garments. His book is short, but it carries one of the largest promises in the Old Testament: that God would one day pour out His Spirit not on a chosen few but on all people. Centuries later, Peter would stand in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost and declare that the promise had come true in the risen Christ (Acts 2:16-21).
