Luke: Lost-and-Found + Emmaus — Day 4 — Application

Three days ago this series opened with a sheep wandered off a hillside, a coin rolled under the furniture, a younger son walking the road home with a rehearsed apology in his mouth. The pivot came in the middle of the week: the father who runs. Today the question turns from being found to living found. What does a found person actually do with the rest of the day?

Luke gives the answer by setting two scenes side by side, and it is no accident that they share a verb. In chapter 15 the father says of the prodigal, “He was lost and is found.” In chapter 24, after seven dusty miles, “their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus.” To be found and to recognize are the same motion seen from two angles. The Shepherd searches; the sheep, when it is finally held, lifts its head and knows the One holding it.

The two on the Emmaus road are not strangers to Jesus. They have followed Him, hoped in Him, grieved Him. And still, for seven miles, “their eyes were kept from recognizing Him” (Luke 24:16). This is the honest part. Being found does not mean you will always feel the presence of the One who found you. The disciples walked beside the risen Christ and felt only sadness. Application begins exactly there – in the gap between being accompanied and noticing it.

A friend told me about the week her father was dying. She drove the same forty minutes to the hospital every evening, and on the way home she would call her sister, and they would talk about everything – the doctors, the paperwork, what to say at the funeral they had not admitted yet they were planning. She said the calls felt like the only thing holding her up.

Months later she realized she could not remember a single thing they had decided on those drives. What she remembered was that she had not been alone in the car. The voice on the line had carried her home each night without her noticing it was carrying her.

That is the Emmaus road. Two people walk a familiar route deep in grief, talking through everything that has happened, and the whole time Someone is walking with them – explaining, steadying, drawing near – and they do not know it until much later. “Were not our hearts burning within us,” they say afterward, “as He spoke with us on the road?” (Luke 24:32). The burning was real while it was happening. The recognizing came after.

Two disciples – one named Cleopas (Luke 24:18), the other unnamed – leaving Jerusalem on resurrection afternoon, walking seven miles to Emmaus while talking through the crushing events of the weekend. The risen Jesus joins them unrecognized, opens the Scriptures to them, and is finally known to them in the breaking of bread. They then walk the seven miles back that same hour to tell the Eleven.
