Three gardens, one second Adam

By chapter 15 the upper room is behind them. Jesus has washed feet, broken bread, and spoken the longest unbroken speech in the Gospels – the vine, the Helper, the prayer in chapter 17 that the disciples be kept and made one. Then the words end and the night moves. “After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden” (18:1).

John alone tells us it was a garden. Matthew, Mark, and Luke name the place Gethsemane; John steps back and names the kind of place. He does the same thing at the end. When the body is taken down, John writes, “Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid” (19:41). And on the third morning, when Mary turns and sees a man she does not yet recognize, John tells us why she mistook Him: she was “thinking He was the gardener” (20:15).

Three gardens, set deliberately at the seams of the story – the garden of the arrest, the garden of the tomb, the garden of the morning. John is the only Evangelist who frames the Passion this way, and he is not decorating. He is pointing all the way back to the first pages of Scripture, to the garden where it all went wrong.

There was a house I knew growing up with a walled garden behind it that no one used anymore. The old woman who had planted it was gone, and her family had nailed the gate shut rather than tend it. You could see it from the upstairs window: roses gone wild, a stone bench under leaves, a place clearly made for someone to walk in the evening – sealed off, going to seed, because the one who loved it had left and no one knew how to bring it back.

I used to think that was the saddest thing about the house. A garden is not a wilderness; it is wilderness that someone chose, planted, and kept. When the keeper leaves, it does not simply pause. It closes. The gate goes up. The walk ends.

The Bible opens with exactly that kind of garden, and exactly that kind of loss. People made to walk with God in the cool of the evening hide instead, and the gate is sealed behind them with a flaming sword. From that moment the whole story is a question with no human answer: who will get us back into the garden? John’s reply is to march the rescue straight back onto garden ground – and to put, on Easter morning, a gardener at the empty tomb.

A woman from Magdala on the Sea of Galilee whom Jesus had freed from seven demons (Luke 8:2), and who stood at the cross when most of the disciples had fled (John 19:25). On Easter morning she came to the tomb while it was still dark, found the stone rolled away, and – weeping, certain the body had been stolen – became the first person to see and speak with the risen Christ. She mistook Him for the gardener until He spoke her name.
