The Word learned to say I AM

John opens his Gospel the way Genesis opens the Bible: “In the beginning.” But where Genesis names a beginning of things, John names someone who was already there before the beginning had begun. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” For eighteen verses the Word is vast and almost abstract – the agent of creation, the life, the light no darkness can put out.

Then verse 14 does something the philosophers never dared. “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” The Greek says He pitched His tent among us, the way God once dwelt in the tabernacle in the wilderness. The Word that made the lungs took up breathing. The Word got a face.

For six chapters John shows us that face moving through ordinary days – a wedding running out of wine, a teacher slipping out at night to ask his questions, a tired man sitting at a well at noon, a paralyzed man by a pool, a hillside of five thousand hungry people. And on that hillside, after the bread is multiplied and the crowd comes looking for more, the Word who was with God in the beginning opens His mouth and says His own name: “I am the bread of life.”

A friend who grew up poor told me about the year the food ran short. Her mother kept the cupboard arranged so the children would not see how little was in it – tins turned label-out, the empty shelf pushed to the back. The children knew anyway, the way children do. What they did not know was that a neighbor had quietly been leaving a sack of flour on the back step before dawn. For weeks they ate bread and never asked where it came from.

One morning my friend woke early and saw him. Not a delivery, not a charity, not an idea about generosity. A man she knew by name, bent in the dark, setting down the thing that had been keeping them alive. She said it changed the bread. The same loaves, the same table – but now there was a face behind them.

That is the turn John 1-7 makes. For most of human history people had been fed by a God they could not see, sustained by a generosity that arrived before dawn and asked nothing. And then one morning the face showed up in the crowd, bent toward hungry people, and said: the bread you have been living on – that was Me. “I am the bread of life.”

In John’s Gospel Jesus is introduced before He is born – as the eternal Word who was with God and was God, the one through whom all things were made (John 1:1-3). That Word became flesh and dwelt among us (1:14). Across John 1-7 He moves through Galilee and Jerusalem revealing who He is, and on a hillside of five thousand fed He speaks the first of His seven great self-namings: “I am the bread of life.” The eternal Word and the man saying His own name in a crowd are not two figures but one.
