A Fire of Coals

Peter denied Jesus three times by a charcoal fire, cursing and swearing. After the resurrection, Jesus lit another charcoal fire, cooked him breakfast, asked him three times, and gave him work.

John uses this word twice, and nobody else in the New Testament uses it at all. The first time is in the high priest’s courtyard, on the night of Jesus’ arrest. The servants and officers have made a charcoal fire because it is cold, and Peter stands warming himself at it while he denies Jesus. The second time is here, on the beach. When the disciples land, they see a charcoal fire already burning, with fish on it and bread.

The word is related to anthrax, the ordinary Greek word for a burning coal. Nothing in John points to another passage, so we should not claim that he was quoting one. The link he does make is inside his own Gospel. The only two charcoal fires in the New Testament frame the worst night of Peter’s life and the morning Jesus gave it back to him.

Breakfast Before the Questions

Peter had failed Jesus in the worst way he could imagine. On the night of the arrest, standing by a charcoal fire, he denied three times that he even knew Him. Matthew says he began to curse and to swear. Then the rooster crowed, and he went out and wept bitterly.

Now it is a few weeks later. Jesus is risen. Peter has gone back to fishing, and he has caught nothing all night. At dawn a figure on the shore tells them where to cast the net. When they land, there is a charcoal fire already going, with fish on it and bread.

Jesus says, Come and have breakfast.

Notice the order. He does not begin with the failure. He feeds Peter first. Only when they had finished eating does He ask the question.

Simon son of John, do you love Me?

He asks it three times, once for each denial. Peter is hurt by the third one. But each time Peter answers, Jesus gives him work. Feed My lambs. Shepherd My sheep. Feed My sheep.

The man who cursed and swore by one charcoal fire was fed and trusted again by another. That is what restoration looks like. You are not only forgiven. You are given something to do.

REFLECT

Do this today: before you open the work, eat something slowly and thank Jesus for feeding you before He asks anything of you. Then do the first task of the day as feeding His sheep: for someone, not against something.

Cursing by the Fire

Today we are in the RESURRECTION, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, in the closing chapter of John's Gospel. But to understand the morning, you have to remember the night.

On the night Jesus was arrested, Peter followed Him at a distance into the courtyard of the high priest. It was cold. The servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, and Peter stood with them, warming his hands.

Three times someone recognised him. Three times he said he did not know Jesus. The first time was to a servant girl at the door. The second time was by the fire. The third time was to a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off in the garden only hours before.

Matthew adds a detail John leaves out. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man.

The Greek word for curse there appears nowhere else in the New Testament. It means to call down curses. The text does not say on whom. Most readers take it as Peter calling a curse on himself if he was lying. Either way, the man who had said he would die for Jesus was standing by a fire, swearing that he had never met Him.

Then the rooster crowed. Luke says Jesus turned and looked at Peter. Peter went out and wept bitterly.

If you have been cursing lately, and ashamed of it, Peter is your companion today. He knew what it was to hear his own mouth say things he despised. He knew the sick feeling afterward, the sense that you have betrayed the very thing you love.

After the resurrection, before this breakfast, Peter says to the others, I am going fishing. John does not say why. Some hear a man retreating into his old life; others hear a man waiting in Galilee, as he had been told, and needing to eat. They went out, and that night they caught nothing.

A whole night of work, and nothing to show for it. You may know that feeling too.

John says that early in the morning Jesus stood on the shore. The disciples did not recognise Him. He called out and told them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. The net filled so full they could not haul it in.

And when they reached the land, there was a charcoal fire.

At night in a stone courtyard, a handful of men in mantles stand with their backs to us around a small charcoal fire, its gold coals the only light. One man stands a little apart at the edge of the light, head down, his hands hidden in his mantle, turned half away. — Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire (John 18:18). Peter stood with them, and denied Him.

The man who cursed and swore by one charcoal fire was fed and trusted again by another.

Two Fires

John uses a particular word for the fire in both scenes. It is anthrakia, a charcoal fire, a heap of burning coals. It appears in only two places in the whole New Testament: the high priest's courtyard, and this beach.

That is not an accident of vocabulary. John is a careful writer, and he sets the two scenes side by side for us.

By the first fire, Peter was asked three times whether he was a disciple, and three times he said no. By the second fire, Peter was asked three times whether he loved Jesus, and three times he said yes.

Some have said that Jesus was re-staging the scene of the failure, so that Peter could stand by a charcoal fire again and give a different answer. John does not tell us what Jesus intended, but the shape is plain on the page.

There is another detail worth noticing. The name. Each time, Jesus calls him Simon son of John. On the day they first met, in the first chapter of this Gospel, Jesus looked at him and said the same thing. You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas, which means a stone.

So at the end of the Gospel, Jesus goes back to the beginning. He uses the name He used on the first day. Some readers hear in it a question: will you start again with Me? Others simply hear a friend using a friend's full name. Either way, it is the name from the day He chose him.

And there is one small word in another Gospel that belongs here. On the morning of the resurrection, the angel at the empty tomb gave the women a message. Mark records it. Go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee.

And Peter. He was named separately, by himself. The one who had cursed and denied was the one the risen Jesus made sure would hear.

You may feel that your failures this season have disqualified you from being close to Him. The courtyard would agree with you. The beach does not. The same kind of fire that lit your worst night is burning again. This time there is breakfast on it, and He is the one who lit it.

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

Centuries before Peter, a prophet sees God in the temple, and the first thing he becomes aware of is his own mouth.

A Mouth Made Clean

When Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up in the temple, his first words were a cry about his mouth. Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips.

He did not say unclean hands or an unclean past. He named his lips. Standing in the presence of holiness, the prophet's own speech was the first thing he knew was wrong.

Then one of the seraphim flew to him with a live coal taken from the altar with tongs. He laid it on Isaiah's mouth. Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

John does not quote Isaiah in chapter 21. The old Greek Bible calls Isaiah's coal an anthrax, which is related to John's word for the charcoal fire, but related words are not the same word. The resonance is ours to notice, not John's to claim.

But the two scenes belong together in what they show about God. In each a mouth has failed, and in each God acts first and then sends the one who failed.

Isaiah's next words, after the coal, are these: Here am I; send me.

Peter's next words, after the questions, are three times yes. And within a few weeks, the same mouth that had sworn I know not the man stood up in Jerusalem at Pentecost. The book of Acts says it plainly. Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you.

The mouth that cursed became the mouth that preached.

Peter's life shows it all at once. Peter was free indeed, and he had fallen badly. He had gone back to his old trade and caught nothing all night. His mouth had turned on him.

And Jesus did not wait for Peter to fix any of it. He lit a fire. He cooked breakfast. He asked the question three times, and He gave him work three times.

If your mouth has been unclean this season, this is for you. The answer is not only to try to swear less, though you should. It is to let God touch the mouth itself, and then to use it for what He is sending you to do. Feed His sheep. Bless where you have cursed. Speak to the people around you the way He spoke to Peter over breakfast.

The coal takes sin away, and then God sends.

Let Peace Make the Call

What does restoration look like on an ordinary working day, for someone who has been angry and cursing and ashamed?

Paul gives a picture in Colossians. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

The verb translated rule is an unusual one. It appears only here in the New Testament. It is the word for an umpire, the person who makes the call in a contest. Paul uses a related word a chapter earlier, when he warns the Colossians not to let anyone disqualify them. Some commentators hear only the plainer sense, rule.

So Paul is saying something very practical. Inside you there is a contest. On one side is the frustration, the heat, the words that want to come out. On the other side is the peace of Christ. Let peace be the umpire. Let it make the call.

That is what Peter learned by the second fire. He did not have to earn back his place by proving himself. He had been fed, asked and sent. His standing was settled. From there he could work in peace, even when the work was hard.

Peace comes first. It is not the reward at the end of a productive day. It is the place you work from.

Here is what that might look like for you this week.

Begin the day by receiving, not producing. Eat. Read one verse. Let Jesus serve you before you serve anyone.

When the frustration rises, picture the umpire. Ask whether peace or heat should make this call. Nine times out of ten the answer is obvious once you ask.

When you fail, and you will, go back to the fire. You do not need to stay away until you feel worthy. Peter did not. He jumped into the sea and swam to the shore.

And whatever your work is, the project, the family, the business, the thing that has been driving you to fury, treat it as sheep to be fed. It is not an enemy to be conquered. The frustration shrinks when the work is for someone rather than against something.

Then, as Paul says at the end of the verse, be thankful.

First Keep Thyself in Peace

The Imitation of Christ is one of the most widely read Christian books ever written. It is short, plain and practical, and much of it is about living with other people and with oneself. In one chapter the author writes about the person who wants to bring peace to others. “First keep thyself in peace, and then shalt thou be able to be a peacemaker towards others.” The order matters. You cannot give what you do not have. A person whose own heart is at war will carry that war into every conversation, every email and every meeting. In another chapter the same book says that occasions of provocation “do not make a man frail, but show of what temper he is.” The failed tool does not create the anger. It reveals what was already there. That is uncomfortable, and it is also hopeful. What is revealed can be brought to Christ, who fed Peter at the fire.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The Imitation of Christ was written in Latin in the early fifteenth century and is generally attributed to Thomas à Kempis, a canon in the Netherlands. The quotations are from the translation by William Benham, available on Project Gutenberg: Book Two, chapter 3, and Book One, chapter 16.

A Man Again

On Sunday evening, the nineteenth of October, 1856, Charles Spurgeon preached for the first time in the Music Hall at the Royal Surrey Gardens in London. He was twenty-two. His church had outgrown every building it had tried, and the crowd that night was reported at about twelve thousand.

During the prayer someone shouted fire. Others cried that the galleries were giving way. There was no fire. People rushed for the exits, and some fell on the stairs and were trampled. Spurgeon tried to calm the crowd. He did not know anyone had died until he was led down from the pulpit.

Seven people were killed. Spurgeon collapsed and was carried out, in his own words, more dead than alive. For days even the sight of a Bible brought a flood of tears.

He was taken to a deacon’s house outside the city to rest. He wrote later that he tried to think of Christ and could not hold the thought. He tried to pray and found no comfort in it.

Then, walking in the garden, it changed all at once.

“On a sudden, like a flash of lightning from the sky, my soul returned unto me.”

He said it was the precious name of Jesus that did it. “I was a man again, and what is more, a believer.”

His wife remembered him stopping at the foot of the garden steps. He turned to her and said, What does it matter what becomes of me, if the Lord shall but be glorified? Then he recited Philippians 2:9 to 11.

On the second of November he preached again, on that passage. Before he began, he forgave whoever had raised the false alarm.

Spurgeon did not find peace by working out why the disaster happened, or by forcing himself to feel better. It came to him in a garden, when the name of Jesus was exalted above his own collapse. His own account is from The Saint and His Saviour, published in 1857. The words at the garden steps are his wife Susannah’s memory, recorded in his Autobiography.

Where This Sits in the Story

ANCIENT TRUTH

John 21 is the RESURRECTION reaching into ordinary life. The risen Jesus does not only appear in rooms and gardens. He stands on a beach, lights a fire, cooks fish and restores a friend.

Isaiah, in the time of the kingdoms, had his unclean lips touched by a coal and said, send me. Peter, after the resurrection, had his denials answered by three questions and was sent. The God who cleans mouths also commissions them.

MODERN APPLICATION

Most of us fail in small, repeated ways rather than one dramatic night. The shape of restoration is the same: be fed, answer the question honestly, and take up the work He hands you.

NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

Mark 16:7 records the angel’s message on the morning of the resurrection: tell his disciples and Peter. And Acts 2:14 shows where it led: Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice.

After the three questions, Jesus tells Peter something hard about the future, how he will one day glorify God by his death. Then He says two words.

Matthew and Mark tell how He first called Peter, by the same sea, when Peter was a fisherman with a boat and nets. The story ends where the calling began.

On the first day, a son's place at the table was kept whether or not he had a good day. On the beach, the fire was lit and the bread was on it before Peter said a word.

Today, all of it becomes one scene. A man who fell hard, who cursed and denied and went back to the old life, is sitting by a fire on a beach. He has been fed. He has been asked. He has been given work. And now he is being invited to walk again.

That is freedom in Christ. It does not mean you never fall. It means that after the fall there is a fire, and breakfast, and your name, and the same two words.

Follow Me.

So tonight, if you can, sit near some light. A candle, a lamp, the glow of the evening. Remember the last thing you said that you regret. Then remember that He cooked breakfast for Peter. Say what Peter said. Lord, You know all things. You know I love You.

Then rest. Tomorrow you get up and follow.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You stood on the shore while Peter worked all night and caught nothing. You told him where to cast the net. You lit a charcoal fire, the same kind of fire where he had cursed and denied You, and You made him breakfast. Then You asked him three times, and three times You gave him work. I have failed You with my mouth this season. I have gone back to old ways to get away from the shame. I have laboured all night and caught nothing. Stand on my shore. Feed me before You ask me anything. Touch my lips the way You touched Isaiah’s, and take the iniquity away. Let Your peace be the umpire in my heart, and let it make the call when the heat rises. Give me work that feeds Your sheep. And when You say follow Me, give me the courage to get up and go. You know all things. You know I love You. Amen.
