A three-verse psalm for the end of a hard week. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother.
Psalm 131:1-2; John 14:27
Opening
Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

A psalm of three verses, among the shortest in the Bible. It is for the end of a hard week.
Put It Down
Today there is nothing to fix.
The project will still be there tomorrow. So will the tools, and the deadline, and the things you did not finish. Today you put them down.
Psalm 131 is only three verses long. The writer says he does not exercise himself in great matters, in things too high for him. The Hebrew says he does not walk about in them. He is not pacing through problems that are bigger than he is.
Then he says, Surely I have behaved and quieted myself. The first verb means to make level, to smooth out. Think of water going flat when the wind drops. The second means to be still. It is the same word Psalm 4 used on the fourth day: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.
And then the picture. As a child that is weaned of his mother. A weaned child is no longer fed at the breast. He does not climb onto his mother's lap to demand something. He sits with her because she is his mother.
That is today. You are not coming to God to get the next thing done. You are sitting with Him because He is your Father, and you are in His house, where you belong.
Jesus said something on His last night that fits here. Here are His words.
So let the heart be untroubled today. Not because the work is done. Because the One who holds the work is at peace, and He has given you His.
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

REFLECT
What great matter, too high for you, can you put down for this one day?
Silence
Most of today is this. Set aside twenty minutes with no screen in the room.
Leave the tools
Put your phone and computer in another room. Today they stay in the other room.
Sit
Sit somewhere comfortable. Let your hands rest open on your knees.
Say the psalm once
Slowly, out loud: Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother.
Be quiet
Say nothing else for as long as you can. When your mind runs to the project, let it go, and come back to the picture of the child sitting with his mother.
Finish with His words
When you are ready, say: Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Then get up gently.
Prayer
Father, I put it down. The project, the tools, the deadlines, the anger and the shame of this week. I am not going to exercise myself today in things too high for me. I have made my soul level and still, like a child with his mother. I am not here to ask You for the next thing. I am here because You are my Father, and this is Your house, and I belong in it. Thank You for the freedom of the son. Thank You that when I fall, I shall arise. Give me Your peace, not as the world gives. Let my heart be untroubled today, and let me rest. Amen.
