Forty years of God’s supply, and the evidence Moses points to is that nothing broke. No miracle anyone cheered. Just footwear that lasted longer than it should have, noticed at the end.

For forty years I led you in the wilderness, yet your clothes and sandals did not wear out. You ate no bread and drank no wine or strong drink, so that you might know that I am the LORD your God.

Two minutes with the strangest summary of provision in Scripture, which lists two things that did not happen.
Moses is summing up forty years, and he chooses an odd pair of details.
Your clothes and sandals did not wear out. You ate no bread and drank no wine.
Both are negatives. Nothing broke, and nothing normal was available.
That is not how we describe God's care. We describe arrivals. The job came through. The test came back clear. The money appeared.
Moses points at the absence of failure instead, and at the absence of ordinary comforts, and says the purpose of both was so that you might know that I am the LORD your God.
Sit with how unspectacular that is. Nobody wrote a song about sandals. There was no day in those forty years when a man looked down and thought, here is a miracle.
It was only visible at the end, looking back across the whole span, from a man doing the arithmetic out loud for a generation that had never known anything else.
Which raises an uncomfortable possibility about right now. Some of what God is doing for you today will not be noticeable until it is a long way behind you.

Do this today: write down one thing in your life that has not broken. Not something good that happened. Something that has quietly held. One line, on paper or in your phone.

Moses makes this claim twice, and the second time he adds a detail that gives it away as the observation of someone who has actually walked.

Feet swelling is what happens on long marches in heat. It is the complaint of the infantry in every century. And the record says it did not happen.
Notice the kind of evidence this is. It is the evidence of nothing going wrong, over a very long time, in conditions where things going wrong is normal.
That sort of provision has a peculiar property. It is undetectable in the moment. On day four thousand of the wilderness, a man puts on his sandals. They are the same sandals. He does not think about them, because the whole point is that there is nothing to think about. The absence of a problem produces no experience at all.
It can only be seen in aggregate, at the end, by someone counting.
And that is exactly how Moses presents it. Forty years, he says, and then the tally.
There is a reason this matters more than it first appears, and it has to do with how people assess whether God has been good to them. The instinct is to audit the arrivals. What came. What was answered. What showed up when it was needed.
That audit will systematically miss the largest category, which is everything that did not collapse.
The friendship that could have ended over that argument and did not. The health that held while you were not looking after it. The years the money was thin and somehow the month closed. The thing you were sure you would not survive, and here you are reading this.
None of that generates a memory, because nothing happened. But Deuteronomy counts it as provision, and counts it twice, and gives it as a reason to know who God is.
So the honest version of today's question is not what has God given me. It is what has not worn out, and who has been holding it.
The absence of a problem produces no experience at all. It can only be seen in aggregate, at the end, by someone counting.
This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and moldy. These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.”

A few chapters after Deuteronomy ends, there is an episode that turns this into something sharper, and I have never heard anyone connect the two.
The Gibeonites live nearby and are about to be destroyed. So they run a deception. They arrive claiming to be from a distant country, and they dress the part.
Read what they bring as evidence. Dry mouldy bread. Cracked wineskins. And worn-out clothes and sandals.
They say it themselves: these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.
The props are chosen because worn footwear is what a long journey looks like. Everyone in the ancient world knew that. It is the universally readable sign of distance covered. That is why the lie works, and Joshua takes the bait without asking God about it.
Now hold that next to the sentence from the day before.
The people being deceived had just finished forty years on the move, and their sandals were not worn out.
The liars manufactured the evidence of a long journey. The nation that had genuinely made the longest journey in the book had no such evidence to show, because God had been holding their equipment together the whole way.
So Israel's own history was invisible on their feet. If a stranger had judged them by the ordinary sign, they would have concluded these people had not been anywhere.
There is something in that for anyone whose hard years do not show. You can have walked a very long way and have nothing to exhibit for it. No scar anybody can see. No wreckage. Nothing that reads, at a glance, as distance covered.
And two different conclusions are available. Either you did not really go anywhere, or something was keeping you from falling apart.
Deuteronomy 29 is Moses telling a whole generation which of those two it was.
The Man Who Wrote Down The Failures
George Müller ran three orphan houses in Bristol on donations he refused to solicit, and he kept a daily journal of the money. What makes the journal worth reading is that he recorded the times it did not come.
On Saturday 29 September 1838 the rent was due on all three houses. He and a co-worker had prayed for it for days. His entry for that morning is plain.
“This morning brother T. called on me, and, as no money had come in, we prayed together, and continued in supplication from ten till a quarter to twelve. Twelve o’clock struck (the time when the rent ought to have been paid), but no money had been sent.”
Then he classifies it. He calls it “the second, and only the second, complete failure as to answers of prayer in the work, during the past four years and six months.” He names the first one too, from the previous summer.
So the thing he asked for, on the day he needed it, did not arrive. Twice in four and a half years, and he wrote both down.
Now hold that next to what he says about the children.
Ten days later, on 9 October, the matron of the boys’ house had two shillings and could not decide between bread and meat. A baker called and left three loaves as a gift. Then two pounds arrived through one of the workers. And Müller adds a sentence that is the whole of today.
“Nevertheless even this day, low as we had been brought, before this 2l. was given, there had been all in the house that was needed.”
There had been all that was needed. Before the money came.
At the close of that year he was asked whether four months of straits had disappointed him, and his answer was that the reverse was the case, because straits were expected. Then the tally: “I further state, that the Orphans have never lacked any thing. Had I had thousands of pounds in hand, they would have fared no better than they have.”
That is the distinction this day is built on, written by a man who was counting.
Müller’s own record separates the two columns exactly as Deuteronomy 29 does. What he wanted, at the moment he wanted it, sometimes did not come, and he logged the failures rather than hiding them. What was needed was there, and he only says so in the sentence after the relief arrives, which is the pattern of provision noticed slightly too late.
What The Measuring Revealed
The manna came with an instruction about quantity, and the instruction produced a result nobody could have engineered. Each household was to gather an omer for each person. Some gathered more than that and some gathered less, which is what happens when you send a nation out to collect anything. Then they measured it. He who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall. Each one gathered as much as he needed to eat. The gathering was unequal. The outcome was not. Whatever the mechanism, the text reports that the measured amount matched the need in every tent, regardless of how energetic the collector had been. There was a second instruction, and this one they broke. No one was to keep any of it until morning. Some did, and it bred maggots and stank, and Moses was angry. So the supply had two properties. It could not be hoarded, and effort did not change the allocation. That combination removes both of the usual strategies for feeling safe. You cannot get ahead, and you cannot store up. Every morning the question reopens, and every morning it is answered, and by the time the sun is hot the day’s portion has melted away and cannot be inspected again. Centuries later Paul quotes the measuring verse in a letter about money. He is asking one church to relieve another, and he reaches for this line as the principle: he who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall. He reads the desert food supply as a description of how a community’s surplus and need are supposed to move.
Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.

The last night, and He asks them to do the arithmetic themselves.
On the last night, in the upper room, Jesus asks a question about provisions.
When I sent you out without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?
And the answer is one word. Nothing.
There are two things worth noticing about that exchange, and they both belong to this week.
The first is the word sandals. He had sent them out deliberately underequipped. The instruction in Matthew is explicit about it: no gold or silver, no bag, no second tunic, no sandals, no staff. Then, months or years later, He asks them to report on the outcome, and the report is that nothing was missing.
The second is that they had to be asked. The disciples did not volunteer this. They had lived through it and apparently had not tallied it up. It took a direct question on the last available evening to get them to say the word out loud.
That is the same pattern as Deuteronomy 29. A stretch of time in which nothing failed, and a leader at the end of it having to point out what happened, because the people who lived through it had not noticed.
Provision of this kind seems to require someone to name it before it registers.
Which is a practical argument for something quite ordinary. Somebody asking you the question. Not a friend telling you to count your blessings, which is usually an instruction to feel differently. A friend asking a factual question about a specific period: in those two years, did you lack anything.
The disciples needed to be asked. Israel needed to be told. There is no version of this in Scripture where people work it out alone and on time.
Calvin On The Shoes
John Calvin worked through the last four books of Moses as a single harmony, and when he reached this detail he did not treat it as a decorative miracle. “With the same object he adds, that their raiment was not worn out in so long a time, and that their shoes remained whole.” And then what he thinks the detail was for. “Whatever concerns the preservation of human life and man’s daily wants is so entirely in God’s hands, that not only its enjoyment, but even its continuance and being, depend upon His blessing.” Read the last clause twice. Not only its enjoyment, but even its continuance and being. Calvin is separating two things we usually run together. There is enjoying something, and there is the fact that it is still there at all. We tend to thank God for the first and assume the second. The sandals make the distinction visible, because nobody enjoys footwear. They just continue, or they do not. And his conclusion is about conviction rather than gratitude. The purpose he assigns to the detail is that they might be fully convinced — that the arithmetic would settle something in them about who was holding their daily wants up. Which is the same purpose Moses gives in the verse itself. So that you might know that I am the LORD your God.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Calvin lectured on the Pentateuch in Geneva in the late 1550s, arranging the legal material of Exodus through Deuteronomy thematically rather than book by book, which is why his comment on this verse sits with his treatment of Deuteronomy 8:3 rather than with Deuteronomy 29.
Where This Week Sits in the Story
ANCIENT TRUTH
Deuteronomy 29 is the second generation being told what happened to the first. The people Moses addresses have eaten nothing but manna their whole lives and have never seen an ordinary harvest. The claim about sandals is being made to people for whom the wilderness is simply what life is.
This is still the WILDERNESS stretch, and the New Testament keeps the same accounting. Jesus sends people out underequipped and asks them afterwards what they lacked.
MODERN APPLICATION
Long stretches of ordinary sustaining are hard to see from inside. The rent got paid. The illness did not get worse. The friendship survived the year you were unbearable. None of that feels like provision at the time, because nothing occurred.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Paul quotes Exodus 16:18 in his letter about the collection for Jerusalem, reading the manna arithmetic as a rule for how a church moves surplus toward need.

Pick a specific hard stretch you have already come through. Not the whole of your life. One named period. Did you lack anything?
A Practice for Today
This needs paper and about five minutes. It is arithmetic rather than reflection, so resist the urge to make it beautiful.
Choose a period
Name one specific stretch of time that was hard. Give it a start and an end. A year, a season, the months around one event.
List what did not break
Write down everything that held during it. Housing. Work. A relationship. Your mind. Your faith, even barely. Be concrete and unimpressive.
Count the list
Write the number at the bottom. The number is the point. Deuteronomy 29 is a tally, not a feeling.
Answer the question
Under the number, write the question Jesus asked and answer it in one word if you can. In that period, did you lack anything.
Keep the paper
Put it somewhere you will find it again. Friday’s reading asks you to hand something on, and this page is a candidate.
One more thing before today closes, because this verse gets misused and the misuse is cruel.
Deuteronomy 29:5 is sometimes preached as a promise of abundance. Your clothes did not wear out, therefore God will keep you well supplied, therefore if you are worn out something has gone wrong with your faith.
Read the next line. You ate no bread and drank no wine or strong drink.
The same sentence that says nothing wore out says they had no bread. No ordinary food at all for forty years. No wine, which in that culture was not a luxury but a staple. The provision and the deprivation are reported together, by the same speaker, as two halves of one account.
So the verse cannot be used to promise comfort. It was addressed to people who had done four decades without a loaf.
And the warning is sharper still thirteen verses into the earlier sermon. Moses tells them what will happen when the supply becomes ordinary again.
You might say in your heart, the power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.
That is the risk he names, and he names it about prosperity rather than about hardship. The danger to their memory is not the desert. It is the land.
Which turns the usual application inside out. If you are in a stretch where nothing has arrived and nothing has broken, you are in the part of the story where God is most visibly holding things up. The part where people forget is the part where it gets easier.
Tomorrow the week turns, and it turns hard. We go to the paragraph in Leviticus that most readers wish were not there, about two priests and a fire, and we are not going to soften it.
Prayer
Father, I have been auditing the wrong column. I keep a running account of what has not come, and I have never once counted what has not fallen apart. Forty years of sandals, and nobody noticed until somebody said it out loud. So say it out loud to me. Show me the things that have held, and let me be honest that I did not hold them. I am not asking You to make this season easier before I will admit that. And keep me from the version of this verse that would make my tiredness my own fault, because the same sentence says they had no bread. Amen.

A group of Levites who led a day-long public prayer after the Law was read aloud to the returned exiles. Their prayer walks through the whole national history, and when they reach the wilderness they repeat this detail almost word for word: forty years, sustained, lacking nothing, their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

LESSON FOR US
A thousand years later, and the detail they chose to remember was the footwear. Standing in a ruined city, having just been read the Law, they reached for the least dramatic evidence of God’s care in their entire history. That is a model for what to do with a period where nothing arrived.
