A Sign Between Me And You

Rest is in the Law. Not as a reward for finishing, and not as recovery. As a sign, given in the wilderness, that the God who sanctifies you is the one doing the work.

Exodus 31:12-17; Leviticus 25:1-5

And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths, for this will be a sign between Me and you for the generations to come, so that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you… It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’”

Given in the wilderness, to people with no farms and no houses, about stopping. Verses 14 to 16 are elided here; the sign and the reason are in 13 and 17.

A Sign, Not A Reward

This command was given to people living in tents.

That is worth holding for a moment, because Sabbath is usually explained as a farmer's rhythm or a worker's relief. Israel had no fields yet and no houses. They were being fed by something that arrived every morning and could not be stored.

And into that, God legislates a day of stopping.

The reason He gives is not recovery. He calls it a sign — between Me and you — so that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

Read the last clause slowly. The LORD who sanctifies you. Not the LORD who expects you to sanctify yourself and rewards you with a day off when you have.

So the stopping says something. A person who stops is saying, out loud and with their body, that the work of making them holy is not theirs. It has been going on all week without them, and it will continue while they sleep.

That is why this is the last day of the week rather than the first. Monday said the wilderness was the route. Wednesday said the terms of nearness were published in advance. Thursday said the cost of cleansing travels toward whoever administers it. Friday said the word is near.

None of those are things you do. All of them are things done.

Sabbath is the day the Law sets aside for admitting that.

And there is one detail at the end of the passage that is easy to walk past. In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.

Refreshed. Scripture uses that word of God, about a day of not working, and does not apologise for it.

The Law also gives the land its own version of this. Every seventh year the fields were to be left alone — no sowing, no pruning, no harvest. A whole year in which the ground was permitted to stop, on the grounds that it belonged to God and not to the people farming it.

So rest, in these books, is not what you get when the work is finished. It is a recurring statement about who owns the work.

Do this today: stop one thing for one hour, and do not replace it with another thing. Put it down, and leave the hour empty.

Say the clause once

At some point in the hour, say it out loud: I am the LORD who sanctifies you. Then stop talking.

Notice what you reach for

Whatever your hand went to when the hour got uncomfortable — that is worth knowing about yourself, and it is the same thing Monday said the wilderness surfaces.

Father, You rested and were refreshed, and You wrote it down where I would read it. I have treated rest as what I get when the work is done, and the work is never done, so I have not rested. You say the stopping is a sign that You are the one making me holy. Let me stop for an hour today and mean it. Not to recover, and not to earn the next stretch. Just to say with my body what I keep failing to say with my mouth, which is that this was never mine to finish. I have spent a week in the books You gave to people in tents, and they were nearer to me than I expected. Thank You for that. Amen.
