Two minutes with the sentence that runs the garden backwards — someone who actually had it, declining to close His hand.
Paul is quoting or composing a hymn about humility, and to make the point he reaches for a picture of a hand.
Whatever harpagmos means precisely, the gesture is clear. Something is within reach of someone who has every right to it, and the hand does not close. That is the whole image, and it is offered as the mind believers are told to have.
Read on its own it is a lesson in humility. Read against Genesis 3 it becomes something sharper, because the garden contains the same gesture pointing the other way — a hand closing on something, on the promise of being like God.
The two scenes are usually set side by side as a simple contrast: Adam grabbed, Christ refrained. That reading survives on either understanding of the word, though the shape shifts. If harpagmos means a prize not yet held, then Christ declined to seize what Adam seized. If it means a possession not to be exploited, then Christ held the very thing Adam was reaching for and refused to use it for Himself — and the contrast becomes not grabbing versus refraining, but two entirely different ways of having.
What the hymn establishes before the deep dive even opens is that the garden is not a story about a fruit. It is a story about a hand, and about what a person does when something that looks like elevation is within reach.

The hymn asks for a particular mind: something in reach, and the hand not closing. Where is a person currently reaching for an elevation they could probably get?
A Two-Minute Prayer
Lord Jesus, You had every right to close Your hand and You opened it instead. Give us that mind today, in the one place we least want it. Amen.

The offer, and the three things the woman saw. Note the King James plural, “as gods” — the Hebrew permits both that and “as God,” and the translations have split ever since.
The serpent’s pitch has one clause that does the persuading: ye shall be as gods.
And the reader has already been told, in the first chapter of the same book, that this is not on offer because it is already the case. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.’ … So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him.” Twice in two verses, in case the point were missed.
So the transaction at the tree is not what it appears to be. Nobody is being offered an upgrade. They are being offered something they were given on the sixth day, at a price, by a third party with no title to it.
That detail changes the whole shape of the account. The oldest sin in Scripture is not a grab at something out of reach. It is a decision to hold what had been given as gift, on private terms, without reference to the Giver. The likeness was never the problem. The likeness was the design. What the serpent successfully sold was the idea that the likeness could be owned outright — that a person could keep the resemblance and dispense with the relationship.
And the terrible economy of it is that they paid. They paid with the garden, with the walking in the cool of the day, with the ability to hear God coming and not hide. They gave away the relationship in which they held the likeness, in exchange for the likeness. It is the oldest bad deal on record, and every subsequent version of it has the same structure: something already possessed, repurchased at ruinous cost, from someone who never owned it.

Genesis pauses the action to describe what the woman saw, and it lists three things. The tree was good for food. It was pleasant to the eyes. And it was to be desired to make one wise.
The word behind “to be desired” there is וְנֶחְמָ֤ד (venechmad), and it is the same lemma that turns up centuries later at the end of the Ten Commandments in “thou shalt not covet.” The forms differ; the word does not.
Which means the narrator has quietly labelled the tree with the term the law will eventually use for the thing a person must not do. Long before Sinai, the account is already describing the first sin with the vocabulary of the tenth commandment, and the tenth commandment is the one that has no external act in it at all. Murder, theft and adultery are things a body does. Coveting happens entirely inside, and it is the only commandment that could be broken by someone sitting alone in a room doing nothing.
So Scripture’s account of the first human failure is not primarily about an act. The act is one verse long. What gets the description is the seeing and the wanting — and the object wanted is not really the fruit. The narrator says the tree was good for food, but the woman does not take it because she is hungry, and the text never suggests she was. She takes it because it was desirable for making one wise, which is to say, because of what having it would make her.
That is why this reading matters for anyone who has concluded that the garden is a story about primitive people and a piece of fruit. The mechanism described is not appetite. It is the wish to be the one who decides — to move from creature to arbiter, from someone who receives an account of good and evil to someone who issues one.
And on that reading, the phrase “knowing good and evil” stops being a promise of information. Scholars differ over how much weight that phrase can carry, and the range of views is real. But the story’s own logic pushes toward something more than learning: the pair do not come away better informed, they come away hiding. They gained no fact they could use. What changed was their position.
The Counterfeit and the Original
ANCIENT TRUTH
Augustine’s reading of the fall is that sin never invents anything. It can only copy. Pride imitates exaltedness; independence imitates self-existence; the small tyrant imitates the throne.
Which is why the counterfeit is so hard to detect from inside. It is not the opposite of God-likeness. It is God-likeness with the Giver edited out — the same shape, running on stolen power.
MODERN APPLICATION
The forms this takes now are rarely dramatic. They look like control, self-supply, an unwillingness to be under anyone’s judgment, a life arranged so that no one is in a position to say no.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Paul reads the church’s drift as the identical mechanism, not a new one: “as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3).
Around the year 397, a bishop in North Africa wrote a book addressed to God, and in its second chapter he stopped to interrogate a theft he had committed thirty years earlier.
He was sixteen. There was a pear tree near the family vineyard, heavy with fruit, and the fruit was not even good — “tempting neither for colour nor taste.” Late one night, after he and some other young men had prolonged their games in the streets as their habit was, they shook the tree and carried off a huge load. They did not eat them. They threw them to the pigs, having barely tasted any.
Augustine could not leave it alone. He had better pears at home; he says so. He had no hunger and no poverty. He interrogates the act until it gives up what it actually was: “Nor cared I to enjoy what I stole, but joyed in the theft and sin itself.” And then, without softening it: “It was foul, and I loved it; I loved to perish, I loved mine own fault.”
And having established that the pears were irrelevant, he asks what he was actually after — and gives the answer that makes this the most important paragraph in the chapter for anyone reading Genesis 3.
“Thus all pervertedly imitate Thee, who remove far from Thee, and lift themselves up against Thee. But even by thus imitating Thee, they imply Thee to be the Creator of all nature; whence there is no place whither altogether to retire from Thee.” And then, of the theft: “Did I wish even by stealth to do contrary to Thy law, because by power I could not, so that being a prisoner, I might mimic a maimed liberty by doing with impunity things unpermitted me, a darkened likeness of Thy Omnipotency?”
A darkened likeness of omnipotence. That is Genesis 3 with the interior lighting turned on. What was reached for at the tree was not knowledge and not fruit. It was a maimed liberty — the one freedom that belongs to God alone, taken in miniature, by someone who could not actually have it and settled for the imitation.
Augustine’s other line on the subject is shorter and lands harder: “For so doth pride imitate exaltedness; whereas Thou alone art God exalted over all.”
Luther, lecturing on Romans in 1515, described the same condition from a different angle, and his image is the more disturbing of the two. Human nature, he wrote, sets up no object for itself but itself; it sees, seeks and aims at itself alone in everything, and it passes by everything else — God Himself included, standing right in the middle — as though it did not see Him.
Not defiance. Not argument. A person walking straight past God standing in the middle of the room, on the way to something else.
Pears He Did Not Want
He was in his sixteenth year, at home in Thagaste, and idle. His schooling had paused while his father scraped together the money to send him on to Carthage, and by his own account nobody was holding the reins.
There was a pear tree near the family vineyard. The fruit was poor. He and a group of other young men went out late, shook it down, took as much as they could carry, and threw it to the pigs.
Thirty years on, a bishop, he devoted a chapter of the most famous book he ever wrote to explaining why that particular night would not leave him. Not the fornications, which the same book also records. A quantity of bad pears.
Because the pears were the point. Every other sin he could name had at least the dignity of wanting something. This one had nothing underneath it but the transgression itself. He had food. He had better fruit. He threw the stolen fruit away. What remained, once every possible motive had been stripped off, was the pure article: the pleasure of doing a forbidden thing because it was forbidden, and of being — for one night, in one orchard, in a very small way — a person to whom the rules did not apply.
He named that as an imitation. A captive producing a counterfeit of liberty. A darkened likeness of omnipotence.
Augustine gives the garden its clearest modern gloss, and he does it by accident, in an orchard, at sixteen. The woman was not hungry either. The tree is called good for food and nobody in the story is starving. What was taken in both cases was not the fruit but the position — and Augustine is the witness who worked out, by examining his own case for three decades, that this is exactly what the reach feels like from inside: not a hunger, and not a rebellion with a cause, but a small counterfeit of a liberty that was never on offer. He is writing at a distance of thirty years, interpreting his own adolescence through everything he learned afterward; the interpretation is his, and it is the reason the passage exists.
Not the Loss of Reason
Chesterton, on why a closed system is so hard to argue with from outside: “The madman is not the man who has lost his reason. The madman is the man who has lost everything except his reason.”
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Orthodoxy (1908), chapter II, “The Maniac.” His point is that the airtight quality of certain positions is not evidence of their truth — a thing worth holding beside a serpent whose logic, in the moment, is unanswerable.
The garden is often read as the story of how sin entered, and left at that — an origin account, filed and closed. The letters do not treat it that way. Paul assumes the mechanism is still running, and running in churches: as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so minds are being corrupted now.
What that means practically is that this is not a story about two people who made an unusual decision. It is a description of a standing human tendency, and it is worth naming the ordinary forms.
It shows up as the arrangement of a life so that no one is in a position to say no. Not defiance — architecture. Independence built patiently and for good reasons, until there is no one left who could deliver an unwelcome verdict and be heard.
It shows up as private jurisdiction over good and evil: the conviction that in this particular case, with these particular details that outsiders do not understand, the ordinary judgment does not apply. That is not moral confusion. It is the assumption of an office.
And it shows up, most respectably, as competence. Yesterday’s word for it was management. A person builds a working life, and the working of it makes the Giver optional — not denied, just no longer structurally necessary.
The common feature is not wickedness. It is a quiet transfer of authority from the One who gave the likeness to the one who bears it. Which is why Scripture’s remedy is never mainly a matter of stopping bad behaviour. Something has to be handed back.
And here the two chapters of Genesis do something that ought to be more famous than it is. After the sentence is passed — after the ground is cursed and the exile is announced — the narrative pauses for one verse: “And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.” The exposure the sound-play announced two chapters earlier is answered by God Himself, inside the judgment, before anyone is out the gate. Something died to make those. Nobody asked Him to.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Read this immediately before the serpent’s offer and the offer collapses. The likeness was the design, given on the sixth day, before anyone asked for it.
REFLECT
The serpent sold something that had already been given. Where has a person been paying — in effort, in anxiety, in independence — for something God had already handed over?
A Practice for Today
A written exercise, and a short one. It needs paper rather than a screen, and about five minutes.
Name one
Write down one area of life where the final decision belongs to no one but oneself — a place with no accountability in it, arrived at honestly and defended reasonably.
Ask Augustine’s question
Underneath it write: what am I actually getting here? Not the stated reason — the thing underneath. Augustine took thirty years over this; five minutes is a start.
Hand it back in writing
Write one sentence, addressed to God, offering that specific jurisdiction back to Him. Keep the paper. Tomorrow’s reading is about what it means that He can be relied on to receive it.
The morning’s opening verse deserves the last word, because it is the only thing in Scripture that fully answers the tree.
A hand, and something in reach, and the hand not closing.
Whatever exactly harpagmos means — and it is a word that appears once in the entire New Testament, so the argument will not be settled — the picture holds either way. Someone who was in the form of God did not treat equality with God as something to be seized or exploited. He emptied Himself instead, took the form of a servant, and went down as far as a person can go.
The garden and the hymn are the same gesture, filmed from opposite directions. In one, creatures reach up to grasp a likeness they already had, and lose the One who gave it. In the other, the One who has it by right declines to hold it for Himself, and goes down to retrieve the creatures.
Which is worth sitting with before tomorrow, because tomorrow the week turns and asks what kind of God does that — and why it turns out to be the only thing He could have done and remained Himself.
Today ends where Augustine ended his chapter: with the observation that even the counterfeit is evidence. “Even by thus imitating Thee, they imply Thee to be the Creator of all nature; whence there is no place whither altogether to retire from Thee.”
A person running a small imitation of God is, in the running of it, testifying to the original. There is no way to be one’s own god that does not borrow the shape from Him. Which means the reach is not finally an escape. It is a very long way of pointing home.
Closing Prayer
Father, we have been holding the likeness and letting go of You, and calling it maturity. Forgive us for the small counterfeits — the jurisdiction we assumed, the accountability we quietly designed out, the rules that applied to everyone else. We have taken what was already given and paid ruinously for it. Teach us the mind of Christ, who had every right and did not close His hand. And where we are standing exposed, clothe us as You clothed them: inside the judgment, before we asked, at Your own cost. Amen.
