Between the Pieces

The setting matters more than the date. Scholars have argued for a long time about exactly when this oracle was composed — some place it with the prophet himself in the last years before Jerusalem fell, others assign it to a later editorial layer — and the argument is not settled. What is not in dispute is the world it addresses: the collapse of Judah, the end of a kingdom, and a covenant people who had run out of ways to describe their situation as a temporary setback.

Into that, God announces a new arrangement. And the announcement has one striking feature that is easy to read past.

He does not say the old covenant failed. He says they broke it. The blame is not distributed; it is assigned, in the same sentence that promises the replacement. And then a clause that is doing more emotional work than its length suggests: though I was a husband to them.

That clause is where an honest textual note belongs, because the New Testament quotes this passage at length and renders it differently. Hebrews 8, which reproduces Jeremiah 31 nearly whole — at 135 words it is the longest continuous Old Testament quotation anywhere in the New — has “because they did not abide by My covenant, and I disregarded them.” Hebrew has a husband; Greek has a turning-away. The New Testament writer is following the Greek Old Testament, which reads differently from the Hebrew at exactly this point. Both readings are ancient. Neither is a mistake. And the difference is worth knowing rather than smoothing over, because a reader with two translations open will find it and deserves to be told why.

What both versions agree on is the structure of the new covenant, and it is stated in a run of first-person verbs. I will make. I will put. I will inscribe. I will be their God. I will forgive. I will remember no more.

There is no corresponding list of obligations. The people in the passage are not assigned a single task.

This scene is preached constantly, and the standard version of it goes further than the evidence does. It is worth getting right, because the accurate version is stronger.

The standard version runs like this: in the ancient world, parties to a covenant walked between severed animals to invoke a curse on themselves — let me be cut in pieces if I break faith — and in Genesis 15 God walks the path alone, taking the self-curse on Himself.

The difficulty is that the two halves of that claim do not appear together outside the Bible. Documents from Mari attest animals killed to ratify a treaty, with no walking between and no curse. Treaty texts from Sefire and an Assyrian treaty of Ashurnirari V contain explicit curses over a cut animal, invoking that fate on whoever breaks faith, with no passing between the pieces. And the one clearly attested rite in which people do walk between severed halves is a Hittite ceremony for the ritual cleansing of a defeated army: a purification, not a covenant, and not a curse.

So the elements the sermon fuses are attested separately and never together — except in the Bible. Jeremiah 34 is the exception, and it is decisive: God describes officials who “passed between the pieces of the calf” and announces that He will treat them like that calf. There, the two halves do join, and the covenanters under the curse are human.

Which throws Genesis 15 into relief. Because Genesis 15 contains no curse language at all.

That silence is not a gap to be filled in from Mari. It is the most unusual thing in the chapter. Every attested rite of this kind puts the *inferior* party under the curse and says the curse out loud. Here the party who could have dictated terms is the one who moves down the corridor, and Scripture does not explain why, and does not attach a formula to it. One scholar states the objection bluntly: we know of no covenant in which the obviously superior party, much less a deity, is put under a potential curse. Even the commentator most often cited for identifying the fire as God’s own presence declines the curse reading, calling the rite a dramatic representation of the promises instead.

The honest sentence is therefore narrower than the sermon and heavier than it. The text says a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passed between the halves. It does not name the walker, and the identification of that fire with God’s own presence is near-universal. It does not say a curse was invoked. And Abram, who had done every part of the preparation himself, was not on his feet for the part that mattered.

He cut the animals. He arranged them. He spent the afternoon driving vultures off the carcasses — the text is careful to record that he was working. And then the sun went down, and a deep sleep fell on him, and the covenant was ratified by one party in a corridor the other party had built and could not walk.

Monday opened this week with a word: derek, a road as it is actually travelled. The charge against Israel was that they had trusted their own — chosen a route and walked it, and were now standing in the harvest of it.

Ezekiel answers that charge with a sentence that has to be read carefully, because the English translations reach for a word the Hebrew does not use.

“And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.”

The Hebrew does not contain a causative verb. What it contains is a construction — literally, “and I will do that which — in my statutes you shall walk.” Both verbs are ordinary. The force is in the relation between them: God performs the action, and their walking is what that action produces. Not a hand pushing legs, and not a metaphor to be waved at. A stated sequence, with God at the start of it.

Which is the same shape as everything else in this week’s second half. Jeremiah’s new covenant is a run of first-person verbs with no corresponding list of duties. Genesis 15 is a corridor walked by one party. Hosea asks for a loyalty He had already betrothed Himself to supply.

And all of it converges on a table, on the last night, when a man picks up a cup and says the covenant is in His blood.

Calvin, lecturing on Jeremiah 31, refused the obvious inference that a new covenant meant God had changed His mind. The new covenant is not called new because it contradicts the first, he argued, and it is not a revision issued after the first one disappointed Him. It is the same God, doing the same thing He has been doing since a fire moved down a corridor in the dark, arriving at the point where He does it in person and at His own cost.

Spurgeon, preaching on the verse this whole week is named for, put the mechanism in one line: “He cannot deny his Word, since that Word is Himself, and he cannot deny himself.”

Which is why the covenant holds. Not because the terms are lenient. Because the guarantor and the guarantee turn out to be the same person, and He walked the corridor while the other party slept.

A week that ends here can be misheard, and the misreading is old enough to have a name. If the covenant is kept from God’s side, and the walking is supplied, and the law is inscribed rather than posted, then what exactly is left for a person to do?

Jeremiah’s own answer is embedded in the promise. “They will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.” Knowing, in Hosea’s vocabulary and in Jeremiah’s, is not information. It is the word for what a husband and wife have. The new covenant does not remove the relationship; it is the relationship, finally functioning.

And Ezekiel’s construction says the same thing from the other side. God performs the action; their walking is what it produces. The walking still happens. Feet still move. Nothing in the grammar suggests a person is carried.

What has changed is where the reliability lives.

This is the difference between earning the ground under one’s feet and walking on a road somebody else guaranteed. From outside, the two can look identical — both involve getting up, both involve obedience, both involve failure and return. From inside they are nothing alike, because one is load-bearing and the other is not.

And for the reader who arrived at this week exhausted, that distinction is the whole point of five days. Their inconsistency did not dissolve the arrangement, because the arrangement was never resting on it. Their consistency would not have secured it either.

For the reader who arrived managing, the same sentence lands as a demotion. The competence that has been holding everything up was never actually holding it up. It was walking a road that had already been guaranteed, and mistaking the walking for the guarantee.

The week began with a field and a road and a nation that still had a country. It ends in an upper room with a cup.

What holds the days between them together is a single refusal. At no point does Scripture offer the arrangement most people are quietly running, in which God’s commitment tracks human reliability and adjusts accordingly. It never appears. Not in the corridor, not in the prophets, not at the table.

What appears instead is a God who will not go back on Himself, and who has arranged matters so that the covenant’s survival depends on that fact rather than on anybody’s grip.

Genesis declines to explain why He walked the corridor alone. It simply records that He did, and that the man who had spent the day preparing it was unconscious when it happened. Two thousand years later, give or take, a man holds up a cup on the night before He is arrested and says the new covenant is in His blood — and the corridor finally gets its explanation, in person, at His own cost.

Tomorrow this reading gathers the week into one page. Sunday it stops talking. But the sentence to carry out of today is the one Matheson wrote in five minutes on a night he never described, having lost the sight he was never going to get back: O Love that wilt not let me go.
