He Cannot Deny Himself

The letter is written by a man in chains, and by his own account he expects to die in them. He has just told Timothy that the word of God is not bound even though he is. And then he stops writing his own sentences and quotes somebody else’s.

“This is a trustworthy saying” is a formula that appears a handful of times in these letters, and it works the way a hymn number works in a service. It signals that what follows is not new. The churches already had these lines. They may have sung them. A man about to be executed reaches for the thing the congregation already knew by heart, which is what people do when they need words that will hold without having to be constructed.

The lines come in four pairs, and three of them run on the same hinge:

If we died with Him, we will also live with Him. If we endure, we will also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He will also deny us.

Each one names something on the human side and then names what follows on God’s. Death, then life. Endurance, then reigning. Denial, then denial. The logic is symmetrical and it is not difficult, and by the third line a reader knows exactly what shape the fourth one is going to take. Something we do, and then the matching thing He does.

Then the fourth line arrives and refuses the shape.

If we are faithless, He remains faithful.

The symmetry breaks. The mirror stops mirroring. Something is named on the human side — the worst thing yet, worse than the denial in line three by any ordinary reckoning, because faithlessness is not a moment but a condition — and what follows on God’s side is not the matching failure. It is the opposite of the matching failure. And then the saying does something no hymn is obliged to do. It explains itself.

For He cannot deny Himself.

Not He will not. Not He has decided not to. The Greek says He is not able. Whoever wrote these four lines understood that the fourth one would be unbelievable without a reason attached, and the reason given is not about His mood toward us at all. It is about what He is.

Verse 12 says that denial is answered with denial. Verse 13 says faithlessness is answered with faithfulness. They sit beside each other, in the same quoted stanza, with nothing between them but a semicolon, and the text makes no attempt to reconcile them.

The commentary tradition has never agreed on what to do about that. One long-standing reading takes verse 13 as pure comfort: human failure cannot cancel a promise God made about Himself, and the last line is the gospel arriving to rescue a stanza that was getting frightening. Another reading, equally old, takes it as warning — God remains faithful to everything He has said, including the sentence directly above it about denial, and a person who reads the fourth line as an escape hatch from the third has misread the word faithful to mean lenient.

Both readings can be defended from the Greek, and the honest position is that the passage will not settle it. What is worth noticing is that even the warning reading gets to the same place about God: whichever way the line points, it points at His consistency rather than at His mood.

And there is a man standing in the middle of this who settles more than the grammar does.

Peter denied Him. Not privately, not ambiguously — three times, out loud, with an oath, and twice in the exact verb this passage is built from. If verse 12 were a rule administered mechanically, the record would end in that courtyard. Instead the same Gospel that records the denial records a charcoal fire on a beach and three questions, and the man who denied Him three times is asked three times whether he loves Him, and then handed a job.

Which rules out one thing with certainty. A denial in a courtyard is not the same as a life lived as denial. Peter is not a loophole in the third line — the text never treats his failure as trivial, and neither does he. He is evidence that the fourth line is doing real work, and that the God being described here distinguishes between a man breaking under pressure and a man who has settled his account and walked.

Around the year 318 a young deacon in Alexandria wrote a short book about why God became human, and in the sixth and seventh sections he framed the whole thing as a problem God could not get out of.

On one side, humanity was rotting, and Athanasius says that letting that stand was not an option — not because God is sentimental but because it “would be unfitting and unworthy of Himself.” On the other side, God had said that death would follow. And so, Athanasius writes, “it was unthinkable that God, the Father of Truth, should go back upon His word regarding death in order to ensure our continued existence. He could not falsify Himself; what, then, was God to do?” He even closes the obvious exit: “repentance would not guard the Divine consistency, for, if death did not hold dominion over men, God would still remain untrue.”

That is 2 Timothy 2:13 with the machinery exposed. The reason God cannot walk away from people who have broken faith with Him is the same reason He cannot pretend the breaking did not happen. Both would require Him to be untrue to Himself, and untruth is the one thing the name in Exodus 34 rules out.

Anselm, writing around 1098, works the same ground from the other end. Suppose sin were simply passed over. Then, he says, “with God there will be no difference between the guilty and the not guilty; and this is unbecoming to God.” A deity who overlooks everything has not become kinder. He has become unable to tell people apart, which is not mercy but blindness — and blindness is a defect, and defects cannot be attributed to God.

So the accountability and the mercy are not two attributes in tension, with God choosing between them case by case. Tozer put the objection down flatly: “The familiar picture of God as often torn between His justice and His mercy is altogether false to the facts.” It is one attribute facing two directions. He will not call the damage nothing, because that would be a lie. He will not abandon what He swore, because that would also be a lie.

Which leaves exactly one place for this to go, and Paul names it in Romans: God put Christ forward publicly, and He did it “so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.” The cross is not God being talked out of judgment by His own affection. It is God being consistent with Himself at His own expense — the only place in the universe where the two directions of that one attribute meet, and the meeting costs Him rather than us.

There is a place where this consistency looks almost unbearable from the inside. Numbers says God is not a man, that He should lie, “neither the son of man, that he should repent” — the verb is וְיִתְנֶחָ֑ם (veyitnecham), from the root that means to relent or change one’s mind. Centuries later, Hosea has God saying of the people He is about to hand over: “mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.” That word — נִחוּמָֽי (nichumay), my relentings — is built from the very same root, and it occurs only three times in the entire Old Testament.

So the God who does not relent describes His own insides as relentings, kindled. Neither text is embarrassed by the other. Scripture is not offering a God so consistent that nothing moves in Him; it is offering a God whose consistency is not the absence of that movement but the reason the movement can be trusted.

This doctrine is usually filed under comfort, and for one kind of reader that filing is correct. Someone who has broken the same promise to God enough times to have quietly concluded He must be finished with them is being told something specific: the thing holding the arrangement together was never their consistency, so their inconsistency has not dissolved it. Cowper’s twenty-seven years are the extreme test of that sentence, and the sentence survives them.

But the same doctrine costs a second reader something, and it is worth being honest about the size of the bill.

Someone who is managing — competent, self-directed, treating God as a resource to be consulted rather than a Lord to be answered — usually assumes that if God is that committed, the matter is more or less closed. Athanasius blocks that exit before it opens. The consistency that will not let go is the same consistency that will not pretend. A God who never differs from Himself is not a God who eventually stops noticing.

What that rules out is a specific and very common arrangement: treating divine faithfulness as permission. The stanza itself forecloses it, because verse 12 is still sitting there in the same breath as verse 13 and the passage declines to remove it.

And six verses later the letter puts both halves on one object. It describes a foundation with a seal cut into it, and the seal has two lines: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.” One seal. Two sentences. The security and the summons stamped into the same stone, which is what has been true since the mountain in Exodus, where the name that abounds in loving devotion also declines to leave the guilty unpunished.

The stanza began with four conditional lines and a symmetry that broke on the last one. It is worth returning to why it broke.

Three lines describe a world where outcomes follow from what people do, and that world is real. Scripture never pretends otherwise, and the rest of this week is largely about it — the field a person plants, the road a person walks, the covenant a person breaks.

The fourth line does not deny that world. It says there is something underneath it.

Moses was given a name on a mountain and the name ended in reliability. Isaiah was given a reason and the reason was God’s own. A young deacon in Alexandria worked out that mercy and judgment were the same fact seen from two sides. A dying man in a Roman prison quoted a hymn his churches already knew. And an English poet who spent twenty-seven years certain he had been cast off wrote, in a letter to his friend, “There is a mystery in my destruction, and in time it shall be explained.”

He did not get the explanation. He got the mystery, and kept writing.

What this passage offers is not a feeling of security and not a guarantee that the feeling will come. It offers a floor, and it says the floor is God’s own consistency rather than anyone’s grip on it. Cowper’s hands came open and stayed open for twenty-seven years, and he did not fall through.

A person can spend a whole life trying to be steady enough to deserve a steady God. The stanza in this letter says the steadiness was never the entry requirement. It was the thing that was already there, holding the floor up, on the days it was noticed and on the very many days it was not.
