A servant sits where he can see his master’s hand, and waits. Day 7 is a day of rest: one short psalm, ten minutes of quiet, and nothing to finish.
Psalm 123:1-2; Matthew 14:27
Opening
Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
Psalm 123:1-2 (KJV)
One of the Songs of Ascents, the short psalms many believe pilgrims sang on the road up to Jerusalem, read here from the King James Version. It is four verses long and it asks for one thing.
Until He Shows Mercy
Today there is no wind to study.
All week we have been in a boat at night. We watched a man walk toward Jesus and then look at the wind. We watched him begin to sink, and we watched a hand reach him before the water closed over him. That work is finished. Today is for something smaller.
The singer of Psalm 123 explains nothing about his trouble and makes no plan. He lifts his eyes and leaves them there.
Then he gives a picture of what that looks like. A servant in a house sits where he can see his master's hand. He has nothing to do but watch for the smallest sign, because his orders and his bread both come from that hand.
Jesus did the same with His own eyes. Earlier that evening, with five loaves in His hands, He looked up to heaven before He broke them.
Hear the last words of the psalm again. Until that he have mercy upon us. It leaves the length of the wait unsaid and tells you where to look while you wait.
So for one day, look at nothing that is blowing. Leave the news, the numbers and the list where they are. You do not have to carry the week's lessons in your head. Sit like the servant, where you can see the hand.
It is the hand that took hold of Peter.
But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

REFLECT

Silence

Lift your eyes
Look up, at the sky if you can. Say once: Unto thee lift I up mine eyes.
Stay
When your mind runs back to the week, bring it home by looking up again.
Close
Say: Lord, have mercy. Then go and rest. If you reach for the thing you watch later today, say His sentence instead: Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.
Prayer
Lord, I lift my eyes to You. I am not asking You to explain this week. I am looking at Your hand, and I will wait there until You show mercy. Amen.
