The anchor is not in the boat. It is behind the veil, in the very presence of God.

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil, where as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

An anchor does not keep the storm from coming. It does not calm the waves. It does not make the boat stop rocking. An anchor keeps the boat from drifting when everything else is moving. It connects the vessel to something that does not move.
Hebrews calls hope “an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters into that within the veil.” The veil — katapetasma — was the heavy curtain in the temple that separated the Holy of Holies from the people. Only the high priest could pass through it, once a year, with blood. But Jesus, our forerunner (prodromos — a military term for an advance scout who goes ahead to secure the path), has entered behind that veil permanently. He is our High Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. The anchor of your soul is not a principle or a promise in the abstract. It is a Person. A Person who has already gone where you cannot yet go, and who holds the other end of the line.
Think about what an anchor actually does. A ship in a harbor drops anchor not because the water is calm, but because the water moves. Tides shift. Currents pull. Wind pushes. The anchor does not stop the water from moving. The anchor stops the ship from moving with the water. It provides a fixed reference point. The ship may swing on the chain. It may pitch in the waves. But it does not drift. The anchor holds because it is connected to something that does not move — the seabed.
Your soul’s anchor is not your faith. Your faith is the chain. Your soul’s anchor is not your circumstances. Your circumstances are the water. Your soul’s anchor is the Forerunner who has entered behind the veil, into the very presence of God, and who sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high. He is the immovable. He is the seabed. And He holds the other end of the chain.

Jesus, You are the forerunner. You have entered behind the veil. You hold the other end. When I drift, pull me back to what cannot move. Amen.

Psalm 46:1-3 (WEB)
The sons of Korah wrote this psalm from inside the chaos. Their ancestor Korah led a rebellion against Moses and was swallowed by the earth (Numbers 16). They knew what it meant for the ground to give way. They knew the waters could roar. They knew the mountains could tremble. And they wrote: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas.”
Notice the logic: God IS our refuge (present tense, indicative). THEREFORE we will not fear (future tense, consequence). The therefore is not a command to manufacture courage. It is a deduction from a reality. Because God is a very present help — not a distant one, not a theoretical one, a very present help — the fear loses its ground. The mountains move. The waters roar. The earth changes. But the Refuge does not.
The phrase “very present help” is ezrah — help that is right there, immediate, accessible. Not help that arrives eventually. Not help that is promised for someday. Very present help. The Hebrew word order emphasizes presence: “God is to us a refuge and strength, a help in troubles He is found very much.” The help is found. The help is present. The help is now.
And the mountains? They are shaken into the heart of the seas. This is not poetic hyperbole. This is the psalmist describing the most catastrophic geological event imaginable — mountains, the most permanent things in the ancient worldview, sliding into the ocean. The unshakeable, shaken. The bedrock, liquefied. And the response: Selah. Pause. Weigh this. The mountains move. The waters roar. The earth changes. But God is our refuge.
The word prodromos (forerunner) is military. In the ancient world, a prodromos was a scout sent ahead of the army to secure the path, to establish the camp, to prepare the way. Jesus is not just the first to enter heaven — He is the One who secured the path for us. He entered behind the veil as High Priest, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood (Hebrews 9:12). He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high (Hebrews 1:3). The work is finished. The path is secure. The anchor is set.
And the anchor enters “into that within the veil.” Not to the veil. Not near the veil. Into the inner place. The Holy of Holies. The very presence of God. Your hope is anchored in the presence of God, held by the Son of God, guaranteed by the oath of God (Hebrews 6:17). Two immutable things — God’s promise and God’s oath — in which it is impossible for God to lie. This is the “strong encouragement” for those who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us (Hebrews 6:18).
The logic of Hebrews 6 is unrelenting. God made a promise to Abraham. Since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself (v. 13). “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you” (v. 14, quoting Genesis 22:17). Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise (v. 15). Men swear by something greater than themselves, and the oath confirms the promise (v. 16). So God, desiring to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the immutability of His counsel, interposed with an oath (v. 17). That by two immutable things — His promise and His oath — in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us (v. 18).
Two immutable things. God’s promise. God’s oath. Both impossible for God to lie. This is not a maybe. This is not a probability. This is the character of God pledged to your security. The anchor is not your faith. The anchor is the character of God, pledged in promise, sealed by oath, secured by the Forerunner who has entered the presence.
The Fog That Lifted at Quebec
September 18, 1838. George Müller, the Prussian evangelist who ran orphan houses in Bristol by prayer alone, was aboard a ship crossing the Atlantic. He had a preaching engagement in Quebec on Saturday. The fog rolled in — thick, impenetrable, the kind that stops ships for days. The captain was furious. He paced the bridge, checking his watch, calculating the delay.
Müller went to his cabin. He prayed. He told the captain, “I have prayed about it, and God will clear it.” The captain smiled — the polite smile of a man who trusts his instruments, not prayers. “I would rather trust my own eyes,” he said.
A few minutes later, the fog lifted. Not gradually. Not partially. It vanished “as suddenly as it had come,” Müller wrote in his Narrative. The ship sailed into Quebec harbor before noon. The captain stood on the deck, stunned. “This is the most remarkable thing I ever saw in my life,” he said.
Müller did not command the fog. He knew the One who does. The anchor was not in the fog. The anchor was behind the veil.
Müller did not rebuke the fog. He trusted the Forerunner who had already secured the path. The anchor held because it was not in the circumstances.
This is where the prosperity teaching gets it backward. It says: “If you have enough faith, the mountain won’t move.” The text says: The mountain WILL move. “Though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas.” The psalmist does not say “if the earth changes.” He says “though.” The shaking is assumed. The refuge is the variable.
Your anchor is not your faith. Your anchor is the Forerunner. Your faith is the cable that connects you to Him — and even that cable is His gift (Ephesians 2:8). The prodromos has gone ahead. He has entered the presence. He holds the other end. The storm cannot sever what the oath of God has secured. “That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:18, KJV).
The prosperity teaching makes faith the anchor. The text makes Christ the anchor. The prosperity teaching makes your belief the thing that holds. The text makes His blood the thing that holds. The prosperity teaching says: “If you believe hard enough, the mountain stands.” The text says: The mountain falls. But the Anchor holds. The mountain falls. But the Forerunner has entered. The mountain falls. But the oath of God stands.
This is not bad news. This is the only good news that works when the mountain actually falls. A faith-anchor fails when your faith falters. A Christ-anchor holds because Christ does not falter. A circumstance-anchor fails when circumstances change. A God-anchor holds because God does not change. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). The Anchor holds because the Anchor is Him.
REFLECT
Where have you been trying to be the anchor instead of trusting the Anchor? What would it look like to let the Forerunner hold you?
The mountains are moving. The earth is changing. The waters are roaring. This is not a hypothetical. This is your Tuesday. This is the phone call at midnight. The scan result. The letter in the mail. The conversation that changes everything.
But God is our refuge and strength. A very present help. Not a distant one. Not a theoretical one. Very present. And Jesus, our forerunner, has entered behind the veil. He holds the other end. The anchor is sure. The anchor is steadfast. The anchor is not in the boat. The anchor is in the presence of God.
You do not need to hold the mountain. You need to know who holds the anchor. The psalmist knew: “The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” The writer of Hebrews knew: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul… where as a forerunner Jesus entered for us.” George Müller knew: the fog lifts when the Forerunner has secured the path.
The mountain is shaking. The waters are roaring. The earth is changing. But the Anchor holds. The Refuge stands. The Forerunner has entered. And He holds the other end of the line.

The anchor metaphor runs throughout Scripture because it captures something essential about hope. In Acts 27, Paul’s ship is caught in a northeaster for fourteen days. They drop four anchors from the stern and pray for daylight. The anchors don’t stop the storm. They don’t calm the sea. But they keep the ship from being dashed on the rocks. When morning comes, they cut the anchors loose and run the ship aground on Malta — everyone survives. The anchors did their job: they held the ship in the storm until the storm passed.
Your hope is an anchor of the soul. It doesn’t stop the storm. It doesn’t calm the circumstances. But it keeps you from being dashed on the rocks of despair. It holds you in the presence of God until the storm passes. And the storm WILL pass. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5). The anchor holds because the Forerunner has entered behind the veil. He holds the other end. The chain is His righteousness. The seabed is the throne of God. The anchor is sure. The anchor is steadfast. The anchor enters into that within the veil.
This is the theology of the anchor: it is not your grip that holds. It is His. You are not the anchor. You are the ship. The anchor is Christ. The chain is the Spirit. The seabed is the Father’s throne. And the Forerunner has gone ahead to secure the mooring. Your job is not to be the anchor. Your job is to trust the Anchor. To let the chain run out. To let the Forerunner hold you fast.
John Newton, the former slave trader turned hymnwriter, understood this. In a letter to a friend in 1775, he wrote: “The storm is His servant. It comes at His bidding, it goes at His command, and it does His work — even when that work is to strip us of our false refuges and drive us to the only Rock.” The storm is not the enemy of the anchor. The storm is the servant that proves the anchor. The contrary wind is the condition that makes the anchor necessary. Without the storm, you would never know the Anchor holds. Without the shaking, you would never know the Refuge stands. The storm does not destroy the anchor. The storm reveals it.
And this is the comfort: the Anchor is not in the boat. The Anchor is behind the veil. The Anchor is in the presence of God. The Forerunner has entered. He holds the other end. Your faith may falter. Your grip may slip. Your circumstances may shake. But the Anchor does not move. The Forerunner does not let go. The oath of God does not fail. Two immutable things — God’s promise and God’s oath — in which it is impossible for God to lie. This is the strong encouragement for those who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
