“Walking in Peace in the Midst of A Storm” — Euangelion riso series art
The week in eleven words: “You who once were far off are made near by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13). That is the gospel. That is the peace. Far off — the storm, the distance, the fear, the sinking. Made near — the Anchor behind the veil, the Voice that commands, the Presence deliberately set, the Hand that catches, the Umpire that rules. By the blood of Christ — not by your faith, not by your technique, not by your calm. By His blood.
The storm did not stop this week. The wind was contrary. The mountains shook. The waters roared. The fleas bit. The fog rolled in. The phone rang at 2:17 AM. The scan showed the shadow. The betrayal landed. The loss came.
But the peace did not leave. Because the peace was not in the calm. The peace was in the boat. The peace was behind the veil. The peace was the Word spoken. The peace was the Presence set. The peace was the Hand stretched forth. The peace was the Umpire’s call: Safe. You are kept. You are His.
Five takeaways, one per teaching day:
1. THE STORM DOES NOT SURPRISE HIM (Day 1 — Sabbath). Jesus slept in the stern on a cushion. The Creator of wind and waves, exhausted in His humanity, unbothered by the chaos. The disciples’ panic revealed what was already in them — not a lack of technique, but a lack of trust in the Person. The peace was in the boat before the calm came.
2. THE ANCHOR HOLDS BEHIND THE VEIL (Day 2 — A). “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul… entering into that within the veil, where as a forerunner Jesus entered for us” (Hebrews 6:19-20). The anchor is not in the boat. It is not on the mountain. It is behind the veil, in the very presence of God. The mountains move. The Anchor does not.
3. THE WORD COMMANDS THE WIND (Day 3 — B). “Peace, be still” (siōpa, pephimōso). The same voice that spoke creation into being speaks to the storm. Psalm 29: the voice breaks cedars, shakes wilderness, makes deer calve — and “Yahweh sits as King forever. Yahweh will bless His people with peace.” Isaiah 54:10: “The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed.” The covenant of peace outlasts geology.
4. THE PRESENCE IS A DELIBERATE SET (Day 4 — C). “I have set Yahweh always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved” (Psalm 16:8). Not “I feel His presence.” I HAVE SET. A deliberate positioning. The circumstances press; the Presence sustains. Corrie ten Boom in Ravensbrück: the fleas were the guard that protected the Bible study. The very thing you hate may be the guard that protects the space where God meets you.
5. THE HAND CATCHES WHEN YOU SINK (Day 5 — B′). Peter walked on water — then looked at the wind, and sank. “Lord, save me.” Immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand. The wind ceased when He entered the boat. Romans 8:35-39: nothing — not oppression, not anguish, not persecution, not famine, not nakedness, not peril, not sword, not death, not life, not angels, not principalities, not things present, not things to come, not powers, not height, not depth, not any other created thing — can separate us from the love of Christ. The storm cannot separate; it reveals the grip.
6. THE UMPIRE RULES THE HEART (Day 6 — A′). “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts” (brabeuetō — act as umpire). Not circumstances. Not feelings. The peace of Christ decides. The world’s peace is a ceasefire; Christ’s peace is a Person. The umpire does not stop the game. The umpire calls the game in the storm.
REFLECT
Which of the six takeaways landed hardest this week? Which one do you need to carry into tomorrow?
The horizon: Revelation 21:3-4. “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Day 2’s one rationed room — the Holy of Holies, behind the veil, where the high priest entered once a year — becomes the whole city. The tabernacle of God IS with men. No more veil. No more distance. No more storm. No more sea (Revelation 21:1).
The covenant of peace (Isaiah 54:10) reaches its consummation. The mountains departed. The hills removed. But the kindness did not depart. The covenant of peace was not removed. And now: the tabernacle of God is with men. They shall see His face (Revelation 22:4) — the answer to Exodus 33:20 and the completion of 2 Corinthians 3:18. Nearness with nothing required of it. Nothing added.
This is where the week ends. Not in a technique. Not in a feeling. In the Person. The One who slept in the boat. The One who entered behind the veil. The One who spoke “Peace, be still.” The One at your right hand. The One who stretches forth His hand. The One whose peace umpires. The One who will wipe away every tear.
The storm does not ask permission. But the Storm-Calm-er does not ask permission either. He enters the boat. He enters the heart. He stays.
For thus said the Lord Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, “You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence.” You refused,
Isaiah 30:15 (WEB)
Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still.
Exodus 14:14 (WEB)
Isaiah 30:15 — the sabbath anchor. “You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence.” The Hebrew: b’shuvah v’nachat tivashe’un — in returning (repentance, turning back) and rest (quietness, cessation from striving) you shall be saved. B’sheket u’v’vtachah — in quietness and in trust (confidence, security) shall be your strength.
Exodus 14:14 — the Red Sea moment. Israel trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the sea. Moses: “Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” Yahweh: “Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still.”
The sabbath is not earned by surviving the week. It is the posture that survived it. Stillness is not passivity — it is trust with its boots on. The Lord fights. You be still. The salvation comes in returning and rest. The strength comes in quietness and confidence.
This is the sabbath invitation: stop rowing against the contrary wind. The Lord fights for you. You be still. The Anchor holds. The Voice commands. The Presence sustains. The Hand catches. The Umpire rules. You — return. Rest. Be quiet. Trust. This is the strength.
The Week's Prayer
Lord of the storm, Lord of the calm, Lord of the boat, Lord of the heart — You are the Anchor behind the veil. You are the Voice that commands. You are the Presence at my right hand. You are the Hand that catches. You are the Umpire who rules. The storm did not surprise You. The peace did not leave. You stayed. You stay. You will stay. Amen.
IN YOUR OWN WORDS
The Boat Stayed Afloat
I will carry this week’s six anchors into every storm: He is not surprised. The Anchor holds. The Word commands. The Presence is set. The Hand catches. The Umpire rules.
