The thrice-holy King, and the coal that touched my lips

Isaiah marks the moment by a death. “In the year that King Uzziah died.” Uzziah had reigned over Judah for fifty-two years – longer than most people living had been alive. He was the only king they had known. Strong, capable, and at the end leprous and shut away, because he had once reached into the temple to burn incense that was not his to burn. When a throne like that goes empty, a nation holds its breath. Who is in charge now?

Into that vacancy Isaiah is given a sight. He sees the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe alone – just the hem of the garment – fills the entire temple. The room built to contain the worship of God cannot contain the edge of His clothing. Above the throne stand the seraphim, the burning ones, and even they cover their faces. They are sinless, and they will not look directly at Him. They cover their feet, too, the way you remove your shoes on holy ground. With the wings that are left, they fly. And they call to one another, not a hymn they compose but a fact they cannot stop announcing: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”

The sound is not gentle. The doorposts shake. The thresholds tremble. The house fills with smoke. This is the God Judah had been forsaking – the One the first chapter of Isaiah says they had “despised,” the Holy One of Israel they turned their backs on. They had not stopped being religious. They were busy with festivals and sacrifices and crowded courts. They had simply stopped seeing Him. And then, in a year of fear, He let one man see.

There is a particular kind of undoing that comes from seeing yourself clearly when you were not braced for it. Most of us live by a flattering estimate. We grade ourselves against the people next to us, and on that curve we do fine. Then something cuts through.

A woman I know described the day she watched a recording of herself in a meeting she thought had gone well. She had been sure she was warm, patient, generous. The video showed her interrupting, checking her phone, rolling her eyes when a colleague spoke. She said she had to stop the playback. It was not that she had become a worse person between the meeting and the recording. It was that, for ninety seconds, she saw what was actually there instead of what she assumed.

Isaiah was a prophet. By any human measure, a good man, called by God, the most articulate voice of his generation. “A man of unclean lips,” he would have agreed in the abstract, the way we all nod at the idea that nobody’s perfect. But standing in the smoke, under the threefold holy, the abstraction became unbearable. He did not say I have made some mistakes. He said, “Woe is me, for I am ruined.” The word is the cry you make at a funeral. He is at his own. The holiness did not lower him with a verdict. It simply removed the curve he had been grading on.

A prophet in Jerusalem in the eighth century BC, called in the year King Uzziah died, around 740 BC. He prophesied for some forty years as Assyria devoured the northern kingdom and threatened Judah. More than any other biblical writer he calls God “the Holy One of Israel,” binding God’s untouchable holiness to His covenant love for an unworthy people. His own call began not with strength but with ruin – undone by holiness, then cleansed by a coal from the altar, and only then sent.
