Isaiah: Holy One of Israel — Day 7 — Sabbath

Isaiah dates the vision precisely: “In the year that King Uzziah died.” Uzziah had reigned over Judah for fifty-two years – longer than most people had been alive. He was the stability everyone took for granted, and his reign ended in leprosy and a separate house, shut away from the temple he had once entered with too much pride. The throne of Judah was suddenly empty, and the nation felt the floor move.

In that exact year Isaiah is given a sight of a throne that is not empty. “I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted; and the train of His robe filled the temple.” One king is carried out; the true King has never left. The seraphim – the “burning ones” – cover their faces before Him, and they call across the throne room a word three times: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.” The doorposts shake. Smoke fills the house.

This is the surface of the text, the plainest thing it says: God is holy, and Isaiah saw it. Not holy as in well-behaved. Holy as in other – a weight of purity so total that the prophet’s first honest response is not worship but ruin. “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips.” He had spent his life speaking. Now, beside the thrice-holy God, even his mouth is unclean. The nearer the light, the clearer the dirt.

There is a moment when you are caught – not accused, just seen – and the strange thing is the relief that comes after the shame. A man I knew sat in a hospital chapel after years of pretending his drinking was under control. He had rehearsed a hundred speeches for the day someone confronted him. What undid him was that nobody had to. He simply saw himself clearly for an hour, in the quiet, and said out loud the truest sentence he had said in years: “I am not okay.”

He told me later he expected the floor to open. Instead, what came was help. The honesty did not destroy him; it was the first thing that had ever made room for him to be healed.

Watch what happens to Isaiah after his “Woe.” He does not crawl out of the throne room. “Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And with it he touched my mouth and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for.’” The unclean lips are the very thing touched. The confession does not get him expelled. It gets him cleansed – and then commissioned. “Whom shall I send?” “Here am I. Send me.”

Isaiah prophesied in Judah under four kings as Assyria threatened the nation’s survival. His signature name for God, “the Holy One of Israel,” recurs through his book like a refrain. His call came in the temple vision of chapter 6: he saw the LORD enthroned, confessed his unclean lips, was atoned for by a coal from the altar, and answered, “Here am I. Send me.” The same prophet who trembled before God’s holiness was given the clearest promises of the coming One – the Child, the Branch, the swallower of death.
