The Servant we never asked for

For thirty-nine chapters, Isaiah has mostly thundered. Judgment on Judah, judgment on the nations, the long reckoning of a people who trusted everything except the God who made them. Then chapter 40 opens, and the voice changes entirely. “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God. The trumpet becomes a hand laid gently on a shoulder.

These chapters, Isaiah 40 through 55, are sometimes called the Book of Comfort. They speak to people in exile – far from home, sure that their sin had finally outrun God’s patience, wondering if the covenant was over. To them the prophet says: your forced labor has been completed; your iniquity has been pardoned. The sentence has been served. The hard part is behind you. A road is being built through the wilderness for God Himself to come walking back to His people.

But here is the strange thing, and it is the thing that hooks the whole reading. Isaiah does not comfort the exiles by telling them their troubles were imaginary. He comforts them by promising a Servant. And when he finally describes that Servant in chapter 53, the description is almost unbearable. This is not how anyone would have written a rescue.

A friend of mine sat with her father through the last week of his life. She told me afterward that the worst nights were the ones when well-meaning visitors tried to fix it. They brought brochures, second opinions, bright assurances that he would beat this. Every cheerful word made the room feel lonelier, because everyone could see it was not true.

Then an old neighbor came. He did not say much. He pulled a chair up to the bed, took the dying man’s hand, and stayed. He came back the next night and the night after. He did not solve anything. He carried something – the long hours, the silence, the weight of being present to a grief he could not lift.

When she described it to me, she used a word I have not forgotten. She said he comforted them. Not by denying the death. By refusing to leave them alone in it. That is closer to Isaiah’s word than anything we usually mean by comfort. Nachamu is not a brochure. It is a chair pulled up to the bed, and a hand that will not let go.

Across four ‘Servant Songs’ in Isaiah 40-55, a mysterious figure emerges who is chosen by God, anointed with His Spirit, and sent to bring justice and salvation. In the fourth song the Servant is despised, disfigured, and killed – yet bears the sins of many and is finally exalted. Jewish and Christian readers have debated the Servant’s identity for centuries; the New Testament, and Jesus’ own words, identify Him with the Messiah who suffers and rises.
