Isaiah: Holy One of Israel — Day 4 — Application

By the fourth day in Isaiah you have already stood in the throne room. You have seen the train of God’s robe fill the temple, heard the seraphim shake the doorposts with a holiness sung three times over, and watched the prophet come undone: “Woe is me, for I am ruined.” That was Day 3’s pivot – the moment a man sees the Holy One of Israel and discovers he cannot survive being seen. Today the question is quieter and harder. Once you have been undone by holiness, how do you live?

Isaiah does not answer with a resolution to do better. He could not lift his own coal. The cleansing comes from outside him: a seraph flies down, takes a glowing coal with tongs from the altar, and presses it to the mouth that had just confessed it was unclean. The detail that matters is where the coal comes from. It is taken from the altar – the place where sacrifice was already burning. The fire that touches Isaiah’s lips is not raw judgment; it is fire that has already passed through an offering. Atonement reaches him before any errand is given.

Notice the order, because the whole shape of the Christian life is in it. First the holiness that exposes. Then the altar-fire that cleanses. Only then the voice that calls: “Whom shall I send?” Isaiah does not volunteer to earn his place in the room. He answers “Here am I” as a forgiven man, sent on the far side of being made clean. The sending is the fruit of the cleansing, never the price of it.

A friend who worked years in a hospital chaplaincy told me about a patient he visited after a stroke – a man who had spent his whole life being useful, and who now could not lift a cup to his own mouth. The hardest part, the man said, was not the weakness. It was being fed. Letting someone else’s hand bring the spoon to his lips felt like an admission he had spent decades avoiding: that he could not, by effort, fix this.

Then one afternoon something turned. He stopped bracing against the help and simply received it. And the chaplain said the man’s face changed – not into resignation, but into something closer to peace. Being fed had become a kind of dignity instead of a defeat.

That is the posture of Isaiah’s lips. The prophet of the eloquent tongue, the man whose calling was words, confesses that his mouth is unclean – and then holds still while another hand brings the fire. He does not cleanse himself. He lets himself be cleansed. The whole rest of his life as God’s spokesman runs out from a moment when he stopped working and let the coal come to him.

A prophet in Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, while Assyria threatened Judah’s survival. His commissioning vision in chapter 6 gave the Hebrew Bible its most concentrated picture of God’s holiness – ‘holy, holy, holy’ – and the title he would return to again and again, ‘the Holy One of Israel.’ His book moves from a throne too high to approach to a banquet open to all peoples.
