The weeds are found at dawn and the rescue plan is ready by breakfast: pull them up. Jesus builds the whole parable around the refusal — and around a reason the servants could not see from where they stood.

The parable entire — from clean planting to the harvest instructions — heard in one breath before the day walks it slowly.
Yesterday ended in the dark, with the enemy’s work finished and nobody aware of it. Today opens months later, in daylight. The wheat has come into head, the grain is showing — and so, suddenly, is everything else. When the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the weeds also appeared.
Watch the servants, because they do almost everything right. They do not gossip the discovery around the household; they take it straight to the owner. They ask before they accuse: “Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field?” — a question that leaves room for an answer, which is rarer than it sounds. They accept the owner’s diagnosis without argument: an enemy did this. And then they volunteer. “Do you want us to go and pull them up?” No self-protection in it, no delay, real blisters ahead. As offers go, this one is loyal, brave, and aimed at the right target. One thing only is missing from it, and it is the thing nobody standing in those rows can supply: knowledge of which stalk is which.
And the answer is No.
Not “not yet,” with a schedule attached. Not “you have misread the field.” The owner agrees about the weeds, agrees about the enemy, agrees the situation is exactly as bad as it looks — and forbids the rescue. “No,” he said, “if you pull the weeds now, you might uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest.”
Perhaps an offer of yours has come back this way — real help, honestly volunteered, turned down flat. Then you know the sting. At first the No reads as indifference. None of the owner’s reasons turn out to be that. He says no to the servants because he is saying yes to something they cannot see from the middle of the rows.
Every uprooting the field has ever suffered began as somebody’s loyalty.
The Master gives one reason aloud. A second stands silently in the furrows. A third He keeps back for the interpretation — and it will wait for tomorrow.
The spoken reason is mechanical: “if you pull the weeds now, you might uproot the wheat with them.” Wheat and darnel sown into the same rows do not keep polite distances underground. By the time either shows above the surface, their roots have interlaced, and a fist closing around one stalk closes around its neighbors. What is true of plants runs truer of people. Lives grow braided — marriages, congregations, families, long friendships — and no human being has ever been extracted from a shared history cleanly. Church history keeps the receipts: every purge that promised surgical precision has torn out wheat by the armful, and some of it never went back into the ground.
The standing reason is the field itself: nobody present can perform the inspection. Darnel — bearded darnel, Lolium temulentum, the zizania of verse 25 — is wheat’s double for most of its life. Easton’s Bible Dictionary states it without drama: “It bears the closest resemblance to wheat till the ear appears, and only then the difference is discovered.” Until the heads form, the knowledge the servants would need in order to sort the field does not exist. No one is concealing it from them; it has simply not yet come into being. The plants themselves have not finished becoming whatever they are. And if that holds for stalks in a row, it holds tenfold for the human beings the stalks stand for: the evidence that would justify a final ruling on any life has not finished happening.
So the Master is not overruling a verdict the servants have correctly reached; He is telling them they have not reached one. Their eyes are not cruel — they are early. And the person each of us is most certain about, the one who has heard everything worth saying and wants none of it, stands in that same green interval, months from the only season that settles anything.
Worth marking, too, is what the No leaves untouched. The owner remains precise about the future: at the harvest, weeds first, bundles, fire, then wheat to the barn. The refusal changes the crew and the date, never the outcome. Judgment in this parable is not softened; it is scheduled — moved out of loyal, blistered, half-blind hands and into hands that will be introduced tomorrow.
That much the servants could follow: roots too tangled, eyes too early, a sorting deferred to someone qualified. Under those two workable reasons sits a third, older and stranger — a reason about what the delay itself is for. The church’s earliest preachers heard it beneath the No and said it aloud. Their answer waits a little further down the page.
Ancient Truth, Modern Life
ANCIENT TRUTH
The servants’ itch predates the servants. A thousand years earlier David watched wrong flourish where good should grow and wrote down both the fever and its cure: “Do not fret over those who do evil; do not envy those who do wrong. For they wither quickly like grass and wilt like tender plants” (Psalm 37:1-2). His prescription faces the other way entirely: “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him” (37:7).
The psalm and the parable share their agronomy. “They wither quickly like grass” is God’s own forecast for evil: darnel has no future beyond the field. Stillness is possible for the servants not because the weeds are harmless, but because Someone with better eyes and a set date has the matter fully in hand. Better eyes is the load-bearing clause: it assumes a knowledge of the field that fretting has never had.
MODERN APPLICATION
Fretting has better equipment now: the midnight replay of what they said, the feed refreshed to keep an outrage warm, the case against somebody rehearsed in the shower until it is airtight. Psalm 37 files all of it under one heading and hands over the same cure it has always carried — stillness, patience, and a longer memory about grass. Most of what the rehearsing produces is a settled opinion of a person, reached years before the evidence.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” — Matthew 6:12 (BSB). The ‘let’ of ‘let both grow’ and the ‘forgive’ of the Lord’s Prayer are one Greek verb: the Master’s field policy and the disciple’s daily prayer share a single word.
The early church read this parable under harder light than most of us bring to it. Its first great expositors preached to congregations that had buried martyrs — people with every reason to want the field cleared — and what they heard inside the Master’s No has carried ever since.
John Chrysostom, preaching through Matthew at the end of the fourth century, drew out two possibilities and let them stand together: “Either He means this, If you are to take up arms, and to kill the heretics, many of the saints also must needs be overthrown with them; or that of the very tares it is likely that many may change and become wheat. If therefore ye root them up beforehand, you injure that which is to become wheat, slaying some, in whom there is yet room for change and improvement.” The first half restates the tangled roots. The second half goes somewhere the farm cannot follow. In an actual field, darnel stays darnel until it dies; no stalk has ever switched crops. In this field, Chrysostom insists, the tares can change kind — and the No exists to keep that possibility alive. Which folds all three reasons into one: the servants cannot tell wheat from darnel because, in this field, the answer is not yet finished being true.
Augustine, a generation later in North Africa, said it with a preacher’s economy: “I say this to the evil, who yet are Christians; I say this to the tares. For they are in the field; and it may so be, that they who to-day are tares, may to-morrow be wheat.” And when a rigorist movement of his day demanded a purified church immediately — the mixture removed ahead of schedule — he answered from this same story: the Lord’s threshing-floor holds grain and chaff together until the final winnowing, and no one is authorized to run the fan early.
Here, then, is the reason underneath the reasons. The Master’s patience carries ambition inside it — ambition aimed at the evil it tolerates. Every season the field stays mixed is a season the darnel is being given to defect. The delay that scandalizes the servants targets, with terrible precision, the very stalks they offered to burn — which means an early uprooting would do worse than cost some wheat. It would foreclose every conversion the field still has coming. Put it in the terms history actually supplies: a sickle taken through the rows in the late 1740s harvests, as darnel, a young slave-trading sailor named John Newton — and the church never receives the hymn his changed life wrote.
Honesty requires the record’s other column too. The same centuries that copied Chrysostom’s homilies also built inquisitions; the No has been read aloud by people busy sharpening blades. That record argues for keeping the text sharp rather than softening it: the servants’ offer returns in every generation, sounding as loyal as ever, and the Master’s answer has not changed.
The Slow Conversion of John Newton
By any inspection run in the 1740s, John Newton reads as darnel, and not marginally. Press-ganged into the navy, flogged for desertion, traded into the African coastal business, he sank until he was — his own words — “in effect, though without the name, a Captive and a Slave myself.” Then the sea nearly killed him. “The 10th (that is, in the present style, the 21st) of March, is a day much to be remembered by me,” he wrote of the storm of 1748, “and I have never suffered it to pass wholly unnoticed since the year 1748. On that day the Lord sent from on high, and delivered me out of deep waters.” He had pumped the flooding ship from three in the morning until noon, steered her until midnight, and prayed for the first time in years.
A clean story would end there. His does not — and its refusal to be clean is why it belongs to this parable. The newly praying Newton went back to the trade. He sailed from Liverpool in 1750 in command of a slave ship and made three voyages as captain, leading worship on deck “twice every Lord’s day, officiating myself,” over a hold full of human beings. “I never had a scruple upon this head at the time,” he admitted long afterward, “nor was such a thought once suggested to me, by any friend.” Illness, not conscience, took him off the ships: a sudden fit in 1754, the day before a fourth voyage.
The wheat in him grew by decades. Ordination came, then the parish at Olney, then the hymns — among them the one the whole world sings. And near the end, a printed confession at last: “a public confession, which, however sincere, comes too late to prevent, or repair, the misery and mischief to which I have, formerly, been accessary… I was, once, an active instrument, in a business at which my heart now shudders.” He lived to see Britain abolish the trade in 1807, the year he died.
Inspect Newton at almost any single point of his life and the reading comes back weed — the trader on the coast, the praying captain above the hold, the respectable clergyman who took decades more to say the word “shudders” in public. Every reading was wrong, because the growing was not finished.
Newton is Chrysostom’s clause wearing a biography: of the very tares it is likely that many may change and become wheat. Six of his years in the trade came after the storm, which is the detail that ruins every tidy inspection: even the turning was illegible while it was happening. The No that kept every early blade out of his row is the same No standing tonight over every row we are tempted to finish reading ourselves.
What the Enemy Was Actually Farming
Count the enemy’s screen time: one verse. He comes in darkness, sows, and slips away, and the plot never needs him again — because his crop was never the point. Darnel cannot strangle a wheat field; the Master’s own plan has both growing to maturity without the harvest failing. The weeds’ real payload was the reaction they were designed to provoke: alarmed eyes, loyal hands, an uprooting that would take the wheat with it. Resemblance was the bait — darnel was chosen because it cannot be told from wheat, and eyes that cannot tell reach anyway. Seen that way, the single night looks like a wager on the servants’ zeal — sow a little evil, then harvest the damage good people do fighting it badly. The No is the sound of that wager being lost.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The tactic was real enough for Roman law to address: the Digest preserves Ulpian, citing Celsus, granting a field’s owner a lawsuit against anyone who maliciously sowed darnel or wild oats into his crop. Jesus’ hearers did not have to imagine such an enemy.
The parable leaves one practical question standing: if wheat and darnel cannot be told apart, how will the harvest crew manage it? The answer is in the fields still, every summer, and it preaches.
Young wheat and young darnel are twins — same green, same blade, same motion in the wind. Maturity ends the disguise, and it ends it by weight. A wheat head that has filled with grain grows heavy, and the weight of what it carries bends the whole stalk earthward, gold and bowed. Darnel carries almost nothing. Its head stays light, so its stalk stays as it always was: thin, stiff, and perfectly upright to the end. At harvest no one interrogates the rows. The crew walks in and reads posture. Fullness bows. Emptiness stands at attention.
So the inspection was never canceled — it was scheduled for the one season in which it cannot miss. That is the quiet logic under the Master’s timing, and before it offers any comfort it holds up two mirrors.
The first faces our certainties about other people. Whatever sorting we have been running — the mental roster of the solid and the suspect, the coworker filed under hopeless, the public figure filed under fraud — all of it is a reading of green plants. The evidence is not in. On the parable’s own terms, the confident early sorter is the most dangerous worker in the field; the stiffest stalks in the story, after all, are the servants, sure of their eyes and reaching for a blade. This very page has already met a man every early reading condemned, and the readings had four decades of being wrong left to run. Every household that has quietly closed a file on somebody holds a reading of the same kind: taken in the green, filed as final, unverifiable for years yet.
The second mirror is less comfortable, because it faces our posture. If fullness bows and emptiness stands straight, then unbending certainty about our own rightness belongs on the darnel side of the picture. The lives that have actually filled — with grace received, wrongs forgiven, mercy absorbed and passed along — tend to bend: quicker to stoop, slower to sentence. A rigid uprightness that has never yet bowed under the weight of its own forgiven debt is carrying less than it appears to.
What remains for hands that have been refused the pulling? The work they were hired for all along: water the rows within reach, mend what can be mended, and let the psalm set the posture — be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him. Stillness of that kind is labor in the right direction, performed by workers who have finally stopped doing the enemy’s threshing for him. It is also how a person waits on someone who wants nothing to do with God — not by pretending the row looks well, but by refusing to call a season that is still months from its own ending.
Do not fret over those who do evil; do not envy those who do wrong. For they wither quickly like grass and wilt like tender plants. … Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when men prosper in their ways, when they carry out wicked schemes.

Ten minutes with pen and paper — handwriting slows a sorting mind down.
List the sortings
Write three names you have already filed — one as solid, one as suspect, one as finished. Beside each, note how much of their growing you have actually seen.
Copy the clause
Under the names, copy Augustine’s sentence: ‘they who to-day are tares, may to-morrow be wheat.’ Let it sit beneath your filings without argument.
Find your own green season
Write two or three sentences about the stretch of your life that would have read as weed to any inspector — and who declined to pull you during it.
End with the verb
Close the page with one word, written large: aphete — let. Date it.
Look back across the day from its evening side. A discovery at first light. A question asked well. An offer made in loyalty and answered with refusal. Two reasons you can hold in your hands — roots that share dirt, eyes that cannot read green — and a third, spoken by old preachers, that turns the whole delay into mercy with an aim.
None of it makes the Owner casual about weeds. The bundles and the burning stand in the story exactly where He put them; the harvest has a date and a crew. Judgment stands untouched by the No. Volunteers are what it turns away — volunteers, and verdicts.
So the day ends with an honest inventory. Somewhere in your life there is a blade you keep within reach — a sorting you rerun, a case you keep building, a person whose uprooting you have quietly costed out. The parable does not ask you to approve of their weeds. It asks you to believe the field has an Owner who saw everything you have seen, earlier and more clearly, and still said let — and that His patience is the settled policy of the only One who knows what every stalk is still becoming. The harvest is not postponed out of softness; it is held for the one morning on which it could be accurate — and every day it is held is another day a row can still turn.
David’s line is the right one to sleep on: be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him. Stillness will feel, at first, like idleness — and all the while it will be the first labor of hands that have handed the blade back.
Tomorrow Jesus takes the story indoors and interprets it Himself, symbol by symbol. One of those symbols will set this whole day inside a frame larger than the servants ever suspected.
Prayer
Patient Master, I have prayed like the servants more often than I have prayed like You: inspection dressed up as intercession, a blade behind my back. Forgive the fever. You know the name I carry — the one I love who wants nothing to do with You — and You know how many years of watching have hardened my readings of them. Tonight I hand the reading back. Their row stands in Your field, under Your No, inside a growing You have not finished. Make me still the way You are still: not absent, not indifferent — watching, with the date already set and mercy still the aim. Aphete. Let. Amen.

A Voice From the Story
c. 347-407 AD, Antioch and Constantinople
The ‘golden-mouthed’ preacher of the early church, whose homilies through Matthew are among the oldest complete expositions we possess. Made archbishop of Constantinople against his will, he preached against the excesses of court and clergy until the empire exiled him — twice — and he died on the second forced march. The man who preached the parable’s patience, spare the tares, for they may yet be wheat, was himself handled as a weed by the field’s self-appointed inspectors.
So long as they stand by the wheat, we must spare them, for it is possible for them even to become wheat.
LESSON FOR US
Chrysostom held the parable’s two edges in one hand: real fire ahead, real mercy now. Churches that dropped his balance built pyres; churches that keep it stay planted where the Master’s No stands — between warning and hope.
