If the sorting belongs to angels, the fieldhand’s calendar still has to fill. Jesus points at the sky: the Father has been blessing both crops since sunrise. Then the Old Testament hands over its case study — a prophet who preached mercy, watched it work, and went outside to wait for fire anyway.

By the third day of this parable an honest objection has usually formed, and it deserves saying out loud: the sorting is gone, fine — but the field is still my address. The weeds are not theoretical; some of them cost me something. And for many of us the ache sits closer than that: a chair at our own table belongs to someone we love who wants nothing to do with God, and every reading this week has walked past that chair. If the harvest waits, and the waiting is mercy — what fills the days in between?
The parable’s answer starts with a detail easy to miss: the servants were never fired. They lost one task — the pulling — and kept the whole farm. Watering, tending, mending, watching: everything that makes a field flourish stays in human hands. The kingdom’s meantime is a shift to be worked, not a room to wait in.
And the shift has a model. Eight chapters before this discourse, Jesus described the Father’s ordinary morning: He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Read as farm policy, that sentence reorganizes a week. God’s daily blessings are not aimed at the deserving; they fall field-wide, on rows that curse Him back, every single day, as settled practice. The sun that woke you this morning woke every person you struggle to forgive — and He raised it over them on purpose.
Then the sentence turns and looks at its hearer: that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. The family resemblance is the weather. Children of this Father are recognizable by indiscriminate good — kindness running on His setting, not the world’s meter.
So today is an apprenticeship. Three working texts, one prophet who failed the course memorably, and one woman in a bombed-out country who passed it with a single lifted hand.
The servants lost one tool and kept the whole farm.
The New Testament equips the fieldhand with three texts. Together they cover the hands, the wounds, and the mouth.
The first governs kindness: Matthew 5:45. Since the Father’s sun rises without an inspection, the children’s good can move without one too. Feeding, helping, greeting, doing concrete good to people whose choices we distrust — none of it requires a favorable review of their soul, because it imitates a God who waters His opponents’ fields daily and calls that consistency, not compromise. Kindness on this setting also keeps a channel open. A blessing that arrives without conditions is one of the few messages a hardened life cannot easily argue with.
The second governs wounds: Romans 12:19. “Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.’” Every word is structural. The wrath is real — Paul never suggests the ledger of wrongs is imaginary. The instruction concerns occupancy: leave room, step back, vacate the bench where sentences get decided. Repayment has an Owner, and He does not subcontract. For the fieldhand the effect is practical: rage at genuine evil stops being fuel we burn and becomes freight we forward. Nobody carries good news well while also hand-delivering a bill.
The third governs conclusions: 1 Corinthians 4:5. “Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts.” The materials a fair judgment would require — the hidden things, the motives — sit in a file no living person can open. The verse does not ask us to think well of everyone; it reports that we lack the evidence to conclude anything final about anyone, and it names the day the evidence arrives. Judgment deferred remains judgment — left, for now, with the only court that has the documents.
Sun, room, and a sealed file. Between them, the three texts describe a worker who blesses without vetting, forwards what burns, and lets every last ruling wait — while the God who holds the schedule keeps wanting what He has always wanted: turning, and life.
But instructions were never the fieldhand’s real problem. Scripture knows a servant can keep every rule of the meantime with a heart still voting for the fire — it wrote a whole book about him. He finished his assignment. He never finished the waiting. His story is the day’s mirror, and few of us stand in front of it comfortably.
Ancient Truth, Modern Life
ANCIENT TRUTH
The Old Testament keeps a portrait of the servant whose hands obeyed while his heart held out: Jonah, whose preaching turned the great city he wanted destroyed. He walked out the far gate, built a shelter with a view, and waited for a fire that never fell. The book ends with God still asking him why a plant could move him and a city full of people could not.
The parable’s servants and Nineveh’s prophet make the same request in different centuries — end them now — and hear the same refusal, for the same reason. God’s No to the sickle and His question to Jonah are one sentence spoken twice: should I not care?
MODERN APPLICATION
The shelter east of the city has modern floor plans: the feed monitored for a person’s next stumble, the grudge kept warm as evidence, the half-hope of being proven right about somebody we claimed to be praying for. Hands can do mercy’s work while the heart keeps a seat reserved at the fire.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO

The servants of the parable ask their question and vanish from the story. Scripture, however, kept a complete case file on their kind — a whole book about a servant of God who asked the same question with his life and hated the answer.
Jonah was sent to Nineveh, capital of the empire his people had learned to fear the way a village fears wolves. The command was to preach against it. He sailed the opposite direction — and his own explanation, given later, is the most backhanded compliment in the Bible: he ran because he suspected God would be merciful. He knew the character of the Judge too well to trust Him with a guilty defendant. If Nineveh listened, God would relent; Jonah wanted no part of such an outcome.
The storm and the fish returned him to the assignment, and the assignment succeeded beyond any preacher’s dream: one short warning, and the city turned — king to cattle, sackcloth and fasting. God relented, exactly as Jonah had predicted. Whereupon the most successful evangelist in the Old Testament walked out of the city he had just saved, built himself a shelter east of it, and sat down to watch — still hoping, apparently, for the fire. God grew a plant to shade him, and Jonah was glad of it. God appointed a worm at dawn; the plant died, the sun hammered down, and Jonah asked to die with it. Shade for himself he could accept with pleasure. Mercy for them was unbearable.
The book ends on God’s question — “You cared about the plant, which you neither tended nor made grow… So should I not care about the great city of Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well?” (Jonah 4:10-11) — and then silence. No reply is recorded, because the question was never only Jonah’s. The book stops mid-conversation and leaves the silence to every servant since who has run the numbers on some enemy and concluded mercy would be wasted there.
What Jonah’s file exposes is the fieldhand’s subtlest failure mode. His hands were clean: he preached, the city turned, not one Ninevite was harmed by him. The rot was in the wanting — the work of mercy performed while rooting for the fire, obedience with a spectator’s seat reserved for the burning. The distinction matters because the parable never cancels honest correction: Matthew 18 will assign confrontation, witnesses, process; a warning faithfully delivered is fieldwork, and Jonah’s own forty-day sermon was exactly that. What is never assigned is the appetite — the settled classification of a person that would be disappointed by their repentance. Spurgeon, preaching on the tares, kept the realism and the restraint in one breath: “It is of little use to try to escape from them, for the tares are permitted in God’s providence to grow with the wheat, and they will do so until the end.” Permitted, in providence, until the end — evil named honestly, timing surrendered entirely, and no bench built east of anybody.
Over against the prophet’s bench stands the Sower’s own record. Jesus ate with tax collectors and the publicly ruined. He wept over a city that was, at that hour, arranging His death. In the olive grove, with angel legions one word away, He refused the fire in person — and absorbed it. The cross is the Owner of the field answering Jonah’s question with His own body: this is how much I care about people who cannot tell their right hand from their left. The empty tomb is what that caring harvests.
One test remained for the church: whether ordinary believers could answer the question the prophet left hanging. In 1947, in a ruined Germany, one of them was asked it point-blank.
A Hand in Munich
“It was in a church in Munich that I saw him, a balding heavyset man in a gray overcoat, a brown felt hat clutched between his hands.” Corrie ten Boom had come to defeated Germany in 1947 carrying the message she believed its people needed most: God forgives. She had paid full price for the right to say it. Ravensbrück had taken her sister Betsie in December 1944; her own release, days later, turned out to be a clerical error.
The man in the overcoat worked his way forward after her talk, and she recognized him. “You mentioned Ravensbrück in your talk,” he said. “I was a guard in there.” He did not remember her among the thousands. He said he had since become a Christian, that he knew God had forgiven him — and then he put out his hand and asked for the thing itself: “will you forgive me?”
As she told it afterward, everything in her refused. “Betsie had died in that place — could he erase her slow terrible death simply for the asking?” Her arm would not move. The preacher of forgiveness stood before her own congregation unable to perform one handshake — and knowing, through the frozen interval, that her whole message hung on it. So she prayed the only prayer left: “Jesus, help me! I can lift my hand. I can do that much. You supply the feeling.” Wooden, mechanical, her hand went into the hand of her sister’s jailer. “The current started in my shoulder, raced down my arm, sprang into our joined hands.”
She told the story for the rest of her life and refused to let it flatter her. The point, she insisted, was where the power had come from: “it is not on our forgiveness any more than on our goodness that the world’s healing hinges, but on His. When He tells us to love our enemies, He gives, along with the command, the love itself.”
Munich handed Corrie the book of Jonah with the roles reversed: her Nineveh had already turned, and the question was whether she could bear the mercy. Where the prophet built a bench and waited for fire, she lifted the one muscle obedience still controlled — and the current, as she always said, was God’s. The fieldhand’s entire craft lives in that division of labor.
The Command Carries Its Own Current
Corrie ten Boom’s Munich account holds a precise piece of physics for the fieldhand: obedience controls motion; God supplies current. She could not produce an ounce of the feeling. She could lift one hand — and did — and the rest arrived from outside her. The sequence matters: motion first, current after. Waiting to feel forgiveness before extending it reverses the order and usually prevents both. The scene also names what the lifted hand actually was — her whole message, preached in one second, without a word. In a mixed field, a mercy performed before it is felt may be the loudest witness available to ordinary people.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The account rests on her own two tellings — The Hiding Place (1971), and the fuller first-person version in Guideposts (1972), reprinted in Tramp for the Lord (1974). The former guard is unnamed in all of them.
What does the apprenticeship look like between Sundays? Five recurring practices, drawn straight from the day’s texts — a working week for people who keep fields, not benches.
First, weather-grade kindness. Each week the fieldhand does some concrete good for a person who has not earned it and cannot repay it — the coffee bought, the skill lent, the genuine question asked of the neighbor everyone else has stopped asking. Climate, rather than strategy. The Father’s sun makes no exceptions worth imitating, and a kindness that arrives without a test attached softens ground no argument can reach.
Second, forwarded wrath. When the old injury heats up — and it will — the fieldhand processes it Romans-style: the wrong named honestly, the debt admitted fully, and the collection forwarded to the only Agency with complete records and clean hands. Some find it helps to do this on paper, once, deliberately. What stays behind after the forwarding is grief, which heals. What leaves is the case, which never did.
Third, suspended conclusions. The mental courtroom convenes daily, and daily the fieldhand adjourns it: the coworker’s motives, the relative’s trajectory, the stranger’s soul — files marked sealed until the appointed time. Naivety about evil has no part in it — the week already called weeds weeds. The daily adjournment is accuracy about evidence: nothing final is knowable yet, so nothing final gets said.
Fourth, the kept table. Somewhere in most lives stands a person whose place setting has quietly become negotiable — the invitation not renewed, the call not returned, the relationship allowed to lapse on a technicality. The fieldhand keeps the table set. Late turns are this God’s specialty; the week has already watched Him gather a slave captain in middle age and a camp guard after the war. Presence maintained across years of nothing keeps a road open — the road a turning walks in on.
Fifth, the dismantled bench. This one is interior, and it marks the difference between a fieldhand and a Jonah. Wherever some corner of the heart has built a viewing platform — a vantage from which another person’s decline is watched with secret satisfaction — the practice is demolition: naming the bench, confessing the appetite, and asking God for what Nineveh’s prophet never quite requested: a heart that would celebrate the turn instead of mourning the canceled fire. Correction can then go out clean. A warning carried by someone rooting for the rescue lands differently than the same words carried by someone collecting evidence.
None of the five requires a feeling first. All five move the hand and leave the current to God — which, on the testimony of a woman in Munich, is exactly how the supply arrives.

God’s last recorded words to Jonah are a question — ‘So should I not care about the great city of Nineveh?’ — and the book ends before any answer. Whose name would make that question hardest for you tonight, and what does the hesitation tell you?
Today's Practice: Memorizing the Field Policy
Scripture memory — Matthew 13:30, the sentence the whole meantime runs on. Four phrases, four postures.
Phrase one
“Let both grow together until the harvest.” Say it with both palms open.
Phrase two
“At that time I will tell the harvesters:” Say it with one hand pointing away — the instruction goes to a crew that is not you.
Phrase three
“First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned;” Say it with hands folded — the hard half of the sentence belongs to God too.
Phrase four
“then gather the wheat into my barn.” Say it with both hands drawn to your chest. Run the sequence three times today; by evening the policy will recite itself.
Count what a single fieldhand’s day held. Sunlight imitated. A debt forwarded. A courtroom adjourned. A table left set. A bench pulled down before it finished being built. None of it looks heroic from the road, and all of it is the visible half of the Owner’s patience — mercy given hands.
Here is the discovery waiting at quitting time: you sorted no one today, and nothing collapsed. The field did not need your rulings to stay upright. The weeds did not spread faster for going unjudged by you; the wheat did not thin. Somewhere under the surface of an ordinary Thursday, in lives you touched and lives you will never meet, the mustard kept its secret schedule and the leaven kept working the lump. The kingdom ran all day on power that never routed through your opinions.
One book of Scripture ends at exactly this hour, and it is worth standing in its last scene once more. The city spared behind him, the shelter dead above him, the prophet sits in the cooling air with God’s question hanging: should I not care? Scripture never records the answer, because Scripture is waiting for yours — and today, with your hands, you began giving it. Every practice of the day was that question answered in the affirmative, one small motion at a time.
Tomorrow the week finally turns to face the ending itself — the day the waiting stops, told twice: once as a field, once as a net hauled up a beach. It is brighter than three days of weeds have led you to expect. Tonight, clock out like a worker whose Foreman is competent: tools cleaned, wages certain, the field’s long arithmetic left with the One who planted it.
Prayer
Father of the even-handed sun, I have kept books You never asked me to keep and built at least one bench You have been asking me to tear down. Forgive the accounting. Teach me Your weather instead: warmth without a means test, rain without a memo, patience that expects to be surprised. Take custody of the wrongs I keep re-litigating — the file was always Yours — and where a warning is truly mine to carry, send me with a heart that wants the rescue. Thank You for the Sower who answered Jonah’s question on a cross. Give me His answer in my hands by morning. Amen.

1892-1983, Haarlem and the world
A Dutch watchmaker’s daughter whose family hid Jews above the shop in Haarlem until betrayal scattered them into the camps. Her father died at Scheveningen; her sister Betsie at Ravensbrück in December 1944; Corrie walked free days later through a clerical error and spent the next four decades telling the world that no pit is deeper than God’s love. In Munich in 1947, as she always told it, her own sermon crossed the aisle and held out its hand.
