It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
There is no teaching today. The week said what it had to say. Sit somewhere quiet for ten unhurried minutes. No reading, no phone, no working out what any of it meant. If a request comes, let it come and do not dress it up. If nothing comes, stay anyway. The man who wrote that line about waiting quietly was looking at a destroyed city at the time. He was not describing a mood. He was describing what he had decided to do. This week asked for firmness rather than certainty. Ten minutes of sitting still, wanting something you have not been given, without leaving — that is the whole practice, and it is not a small one. The morrow will take thought for the things of itself. It does not need you tonight. If the ten minutes are hard, that is not a sign you are doing it wrong. Stillness is where the week’s material tends to surface, and the surfacing is not an interruption of the practice. And if nothing comes at all — no words, no sense of anything — remember what Wednesday established. Silence has never been reliable evidence about God. It was in the songbook. It was on the cross. Sufficient unto the day. You have been given today, and only today. That was always the arrangement, and it has been enough for everyone who ever tried it.
PRAYER
Father, all things come of Thee. I am not going to ask for tomorrow’s portion today. Amen.
