Ezekiel 34 lists five things the shepherds of Israel failed to do. Twelve verses later God repeats the same list — as things He will now do Himself. The search does not get delegated. It gets taken over.
Ezekiel 34:11-16
Opening
For this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out. As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep when he is among the flock, so I will look for My flock. I will rescue them from all the places to which they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.

Spoken to exiles. God has just finished firing the shepherds who were supposed to do this job.
Ezekiel is writing to people who have already been failed by everyone whose job it was to help them.
Chapter 34 opens with God firing the shepherds of Israel. The charge sheet is specific. They did not strengthen the weak. They did not heal the sick. They did not bind up the injured. They did not bring back the strays. They did not search for the lost.
Then the tone changes, and God stops talking about them.
"Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out."
That phrase is the hinge of the whole chapter, and it is worth slowing down on. God does not appoint better shepherds. He does not issue improved instructions. He announces that He is going to do it Himself.
Sheep do not get lost in convenient places. That is the nature of being lost. If the search is real, the searcher ends up somewhere unpleasant — in the ravine, in the thorns, out on the hill in the dark. The willingness to search is a willingness to go where the lost thing went.
This is the pattern under every rescue in Scripture. God moves downward. Not once, as an emergency measure, but as the method.

A Two-Minute Prayer
God who searches, I have spent a long time assuming You wait for people to climb back up to You. Ezekiel says otherwise. Come and find me where I actually am, not where I would like to be found.
IN YOUR OWN WORDS
I will tend My flock and make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, bring back the strays, bind up the broken, and strengthen the weak; but the sleek and strong I will destroy. I will shepherd them with justice.
Ezekiel 34:15-16 (BSB)
Five verbs, all first person. God takes back every duty the shepherds dropped in verse 4.
Read Ezekiel 34:4 and Ezekiel 34:16 side by side and you find the same list twice.
In verse 4 it is an accusation. You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bound up the injured, brought back the strays, or searched for the lost.
In verse 16 it is a promise, and every verb has changed hands. I will seek the lost. I will bring back the strays. I will bind up the broken. I will strengthen the weak.
God does not lower the standard after the shepherds fail it. He picks up the same list and does it Himself.
That matters for anyone who has been let down by the people who were supposed to help. The failure of the appointed helper does not cancel the care. It relocates it. The job description stays exactly as demanding as it was; only the person doing it changes.
And notice which direction the care runs. Weak, sick, injured, straying, lost. Not one of those words describes someone doing well. The entire list is people who cannot get themselves back.
It helps to know who the shepherds were. In the prophets, shepherd is not a gentle pastoral word. It is a political one. Kings were shepherds. So were princes, priests and prophets — anyone holding power over the people. Ezekiel is writing during the exile, to a nation whose leadership had already failed so completely that the city was gone and the people were deported.
So when God fires the shepherds, He is not complaining about a rota. He is dissolving an entire institution of care that had turned into an institution of extraction. Verse 4 finishes the charge with the reason it matters: instead of doing any of those five things, you ruled them with violence and cruelty.
That is the setting for the sentence people quote on greeting cards. God's promise to come looking is not addressed to people having a mildly difficult season. It is addressed to people whose leaders ate them.
God does not appoint better shepherds. He announces that He is going to do it Himself.
Hold Ezekiel next to a small scene from a few centuries earlier.
David, secure on his throne, asks a question nobody required him to ask. "Is there anyone left of Saul's family to whom I can show the kindness of God?"
The Hebrew is chesed elohim. It is a construct phrase — the chesed that belongs to God, the kind God shows. And the verb attached to it is asah, to do. David is not asking whether he feels warmly toward Saul's house. He is asking whether there is anybody left to perform this on.
The answer comes back with an address. There is a son of Jonathan, and he is lame in both feet, and he is at the house of Machir in Lo-debar.
Here it is worth correcting something you may have heard. Lo-debar is often preached as "the place of no pasture," a barren wasteland. That reading requires changing the vowels of the Hebrew text, and the standard lexicon declines to translate the name at all. Amos uses the name as a pun on "nothing" — rejoicing in Nothing while boasting about taking Horns by your own strength.
Worse for the sermon version, Scripture tells us what Lo-debar actually had in it. The same Machir who sheltered Mephibosheth later meets David's exhausted army with beds, basins, wheat, barley, flour, beans, lentils, honey, curds, sheep and cheese.
Machir is rich. Mephibosheth was not starving in a desert. He was hidden in a wealthy man's house, across the river, out of reach — which is its own kind of lost.
One more thing about the word. Chesed is not the word for covenant, though the two live close together. Berit is covenant. Chesed is the loyalty that operates inside one — the thing you do because of who you are to someone, not because a contract compels it.
Scholars have argued about that balance for a century. Nelson Glueck read chesed as obligation within a binding relationship. Katharine Doob Sakenfeld settled on loyalty but pushed back on Glueck, insisting on the voluntary side. Others reject legal obligation altogether. The argument is not settled and this is not the place to settle it.
What is not in doubt is the verb. David does not feel chesed. He asks whether there is anyone left to do it to.
Then and Now
ANCIENT TRUTH
In the ancient Near East, a new dynasty did not leave the old one’s heirs alive. A surviving grandson of the deposed king was not a charity case. He was a claim on the throne with a pulse. Every political instinct of the age said find him and remove him.
Which is why the messenger from a king would have been the worst thing Mephibosheth saw in years. The search was real. The question was what stood at the end of it.
MODERN APPLICATION
We assume that being sought means being wanted, and that being found is therefore good news. Anyone who has been looked for by a creditor, an ex, or an institution knows otherwise. Being searched for is not automatically kind. It depends entirely on who is doing the searching and what they intend when they arrive.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
Jesus says the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost. Both verbs. The seeking is not the whole of it, and the saving is what tells you what kind of searcher He is.
Once you start looking, the direction is everywhere.
God comes down to see Babel. He comes down to deliver Israel out of Egypt. He descends on Sinai in smoke. The glory fills a tent pitched in a camp, then a temple in a city, then a body in a village nobody rated.
Paul takes the same shape and makes it a hymn. Christ did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and humbled Himself to death on a cross.
C. S. Lewis traced the same movement in Miracles. He begins with a single line: in the Christian story God descends to reascend. Then he follows the descent down through time and space, down into humanity, down as far as the womb, down to what he calls the very roots and seabed of created nature.
And then he gives the image that has not been bettered:
"But He goes down to come up again and bring the whole ruined world up with Him. One has the picture of a strong man stooping lower and lower to get himself underneath some great complicated burden. He must stoop in order to lift, he must almost disappear under the load before he incredibly straightens his back and marches off with the whole mass swaying on his shoulders."
Read the middle of that again. He must almost disappear under the load.
That is what a real rescue costs, and it is why the descent is not a detour on the way to the rescue. The descent is the rescue beginning. Augustine said the same thing to God in one clause, fifteen centuries earlier: You "didst seek us when we were not seeking thee."
There is a detail in the Zacchaeus story that fits here and is easy to miss.
Jesus says the line about seeking and saving the lost while standing inside a tax collector's house. The crowd outside is not celebrating. They are complaining, because He has gone in to be the guest of a sinner. The sentence about seeking the lost is not a slogan delivered from a stage. It is a defence, offered by a man who has just walked into a house nobody respectable would enter.
The seeking, in other words, cost Him his reputation before it cost Him anything else. That is usually the first thing a descent costs.
And Ezekiel had already said where the search would go. Not to the pleasant pastures. To all the places to which they were scattered, on a day of clouds and darkness.
Seven Times Down The Same Hole
On 30 January 1925, a cave explorer named Floyd Collins got his left foot pinned under a rock in a crawlway in Sand Cave, Kentucky. The passage was narrow enough that a grown man could barely turn around in it. He was about fifty-five feet in and could not go forward or back.
A reporter for the Louisville Courier-Journal named William Burke Miller, small enough to fit, went down to him. Then he went down again. Under oath at the military court of inquiry afterwards, Miller testified that he had reached Collins on seven different trips.
Seven times into a hole to reach one man who could not get out of it.
Miller fed him, talked to him, and carried his words back up. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Reporting in 1926 for it. The citation says only that it was for his work in connection with the story of the trapping in Sand Cave.
What Collins said down there was written down at the time.
He prayed.
“O Lord, dear Lord, gracious Lord, Jesus all powerful, get me out if it is thy will, but thy will be done.”
Then, in the same conversation, he said something that is not about rescue at all.
“tell everybody outside that I love every one of them and I am happy because so many are trying to help me.”
One more thing belongs here. On the evening of 3 February his brother Homer tried to pull him out with a harness. Floyd stopped him. He begged his brother not to make the attempt, for fear his leg would come off.
The trapped man called off his own rescue because of what it would cost him.
The scale of what gathered above him is hard to picture now. Five thousand people stood at the site at any one moment. On 8 February the railroad estimated twenty thousand visitors came through in a single day. Vendors sold sandwiches. A crowd moved to a hilltop northwest of the cave entrance and held a prayer service.
And within weeks of his death the whole thing had been turned into a commodity. A gospel songwriter named Andrew Jenkins, licensed to preach at twenty, wrote a ballad called “The Death of Floyd Collins.” Vernon Dalhart recorded it and it sold.
Twenty thousand people came to watch. One man went down.
Somebody had to go down. Not send instructions down, not shout encouragement from the entrance — go down, into the dark, on his belly, seven times.
What The Record Actually Says
Three things about that account need saying plainly, because this story has been retold for a hundred years and the retellings have added things. Miller was not the only man who reached Collins. A Chicago Tribune photographer named John Steger was also lowered down and photographed him. The seven trips are attested. The uniqueness is not. Floyd Collins has no last words. His voice was last heard around 5 February. He died alone and out of contact roughly a week later. Any quotation presented as his final sentence is invention. And the hymn is in the wrong place. “Nearer, My God, To Thee” was sung — but at his funeral on the hillside on 17 February, by a choir from Cave City, not at the mouth of the cave during the rescue. It is a true detail that has drifted to a more moving position. The rock is worth one more line. Collins called it a huge rock. His own estimate, relayed by a friend, was fifty or sixty pounds. The National Park Service says twenty-seven. That measurement was taken after the rock was removed from his body. It was a rock whose weight he could not name, and which the world weighed later.

Put the two searches next to each other.
A king asks whether anyone is left of the house that tried to kill him, and sends for a man who cannot walk.
God says He will not be sending anyone. He will go Himself, into the clouds and darkness, into every place the flock was scattered.
In both, the one being sought contributes nothing to the search. Mephibosheth does not send word. He does not petition the palace. He is at Machir's house when the soldiers come, and the first he knows of any of it is the sound at the door.
This is the part that is hard to receive, and it has nothing to do with being humble about it. Most of us can accept being helped once we have started helping ourselves. What Scripture keeps describing is a rescue that begins before the rescued party knows there is a rescue, and that reaches them in the place they would least like to be found.
Jesus states it without decoration. "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
Came. He was not already here.
There is a second scene in Samuel worth holding beside the first. Years later, after Absalom's rebellion, Mephibosheth comes down to meet the returning king. He has not cared for his feet, trimmed his moustache or washed his clothes since the day David left. Then he says something remarkable about his own position.
"For all the house of my grandfather deserves death from my lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table."
He understood exactly what he was. Not a guest who had been overlooked by protocol. A member of a house that by every convention of the age should have been executed, sitting at the table of the man who had every right to do it.
He never talks about the kindness as though he earned it. He talks about it as though it interrupted a sentence.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

If God started looking for you before you started looking for Him, what does that change about the story you tell of how you got here?
Do This With Your Body
Today’s is physical and takes about a minute. Let your body make the argument rather than your head.
Everything in us wants the story to run upward. Get better, then get close. Sort it out, then come back.
Ezekiel runs the other way, and so does the cross.
The shepherds failed and God did not replace them with better shepherds. He came Himself. The heir of a dead dynasty was hidden across a river and the king did not wait for him to present himself. He sent. A man was pinned under a rock in the dark and no amount of shouting from the cave mouth was ever going to reach him. Somebody had to get down on his belly and crawl in.
You are not required to climb out to be found.
That is not an excuse to stay where you are. It is the removal of a condition you were never actually given. The search does not begin when you improve. Ezekiel says it began on a day of clouds and darkness, in all the places you were scattered to, while you were still in them.
It is worth being honest about what this does not promise.
Ezekiel says God will bind up the broken. He does not say the broken stop being people who were broken. Two days from now we will sit with a chapter that ends by telling us, in its last clause, that the man at the king's table was still lame in both his feet. The text refuses to tidy that up, and we will not tidy it up either.
What the search guarantees is not that the damage is undone today. It is that the damage was never the thing keeping you out of reach.
A shepherd going out on a day of clouds and darkness is not looking for the sheep that is doing well. He already knows what condition it is in. That is why he is out there.
Prayer
Lord, You said You would not send someone else. You said You would come Yourself, and look, and keep looking until You found what was scattered. I have spent years believing I had to make myself findable first. Come down to where I actually am. Bring me back the way You brought back Your flock — not because I climbed, but because You searched. Amen.

The Man Who Went Down

A young reporter for the Louisville Courier-Journal, chosen for the job largely because he was small enough to fit through the crawlway. He reached Floyd Collins seven times, by his own sworn testimony, feeding him and carrying his words to the surface. He was awarded the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for Reporting.
Miller said he found Collins in the cave on seven different trips.
LESSON FOR US
He was qualified for the rescue by being small enough to get low enough. That is not the usual shape of a hero, and it is very close to the shape of the incarnation.
This is the middle day, and it is where the week turns.
The first two days established a problem. Somebody is in a place they cannot get out of, and there is a real breach that cost something real to mend.
The last two days will be about what happens afterwards — the slow work of being put back together, and the strange gift of being seated somewhere you have no claim to sit.
Everything hangs on this one question in the middle: who moves first?
If we move first, then the rest of the week is a reward system. Get low enough, get sorry enough, get sorted enough, and eventually you are let in.
Ezekiel closes that reading off. I Myself will search. I will seek the lost. I will bring back the strays. Five first-person verbs and not one condition attached to any of them.
Augustine, four hundred years into the church's life, put the whole thing in one clause addressed to God rather than about Him. You "didst seek us when we were not seeking thee."
Hold that sentence for a moment before tomorrow. Not sought us because we sought. Sought us when we were not.
