The chapter ends with two facts in one sentence and reconciles neither. He always ate at the king’s table. And he was lame in both his feet.

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved! And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

Three verbs in a row, all past tense, all with God as the subject. None of them describes something we did.
Paul stacks three verbs in Ephesians 2 and then leaves them there.
God made us alive with Christ. God raised us up with Christ. God seated us with Him in the heavenly realms.
In Greek all three are built the same way, with the same prefix meaning together with, and all three are in the same tense, voice and mood. They are grammatically identical. God is the subject of each one.
That matters more than it looks.
Most of us are comfortable saying the first two are settled. Made alive — yes. Raised — yes. Then we treat the third as something still pending, a promise about later, a position we might grow into if things go well.
The grammar will not allow the split. You cannot take the resurrection as accomplished and hold the seating in reserve, because Paul wrote them the same way, in the same sentence, side by side.
One precision, so the claim stays honest. The tense presents an action as a completed whole. It does not pinpoint a moment on a calendar, and anyone who tells you it means a split second is overreaching.
Completed, not instantaneous. But completed.

A Two-Minute Prayer
God rich in mercy, I have believed the first half of what You said about me and postponed the rest. You made alive, You raised, and You seated — all in the same breath. Let me sit down in the place You have already given me.

Five participles in a row. Not five events that happened once, but five things God characteristically does.
Augustine, preaching through the Psalms, arrives at this verse and asks the obvious question. What exactly is God crowning?
His answer is one of the most useful sentences in the whole tradition. God crowns His own gifts, not your deservings.
That is worth slowing down on, because it cuts against the way crowns normally work. A crown is the standard image for something earned — a victor's wreath, a champion's laurel, the reward at the end of a contest. You do not crown someone for turning up.
Augustine's point is that whatever God is crowning in you, He supplied. The faith was given. The endurance was given. The love was given. When He honours it, He is honouring His own work in you, which He then treats as though it were yours.
This is the only way the week holds together.
If the crown were earned, then Sunday's question — is there anyone left — would have been the beginning of an assessment. And a man who could not walk, from a house that had tried to kill the king, would not have survived the assessment.
But nobody assessed him. He was sought, sent for, carried, and seated. Every verb in his story belongs to someone else.
God crowns His own gifts, not your deservings.
Paul uses a word for adoption that carried weight in the world he was writing to, and the usual illustrations for it are wrong by about fifty years.
Most treatments of Roman adoption reach for the adoptive emperors — Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, the celebrated succession of chosen heirs. That sequence runs from AD 96 to 180. Paul was dead before it started.
The case his readers actually had in front of them was Nero.
Claudius adopted him in AD 50, five years before Romans was written. Tacitus records that Claudius gave the adopted boy precedence over his own natural son, on the grounds of seniority. Britannicus, the son born to the throne, was stripped of his position little by little, and was dead by February 55.
So when Paul writes about adoption to a congregation living in the city of Rome, the man on the imperial throne is an adopted son who displaced the natural-born heir — and that heir had recently and notoriously died.
That is the air in the room. Adoption is not a warm domestic metaphor in that city. It is a live, disquieting, politically charged thing that everybody has an opinion about.
Two further corrections are worth having, because both improve the doctrine rather than damaging it.
The word Paul uses is ordinary Greek, not borrowed Roman legal jargon. It appears constantly in pre-Christian inscriptions around the Aegean. He was using a phrase people already understood, not importing a technical term.
And adoption in that world was rare and elite, usually of adult male relatives, undertaken to secure property and a name. Working families used fostering instead. So adopting a stranger was unusual, adopting into a household that already had a legitimate heir was stranger still, and that is precisely the shape Paul chooses.
The metaphor is deliberately abnormal. The abnormality is the point.
Then and Now
ANCIENT TRUTH
A place at the king’s table was not a compliment in the ancient world. It was a legal and political status — an allowance, a standing, a public declaration of who was under the king’s protection. Jehoiachin’s release from prison is described the same way: he ate at the king’s table all the days of his life.
Which is why the text keeps repeating it about Mephibosheth. Four times in one chapter it says he ate at the king’s table. It is not being sentimental. It is recording his status.
MODERN APPLICATION
We hear seated at the table and think of belonging as a feeling — being welcome, being included, being liked. The ancient sense is colder and stronger. It is about provision and standing that do not depend on the mood of the room.
NEW TESTAMENT ECHO
And Paul says the same thing in the same register. Not that God feels warmly toward you, but that He seated you — a completed action, with God as the subject, in the same breath as the resurrection.
The Boy With No Name
In the winter of 1868 a man named Slater, working for the Children’s Aid Society in New York, found a thin and sorrowful boy on the street, heard his story, bought him a breakfast and walked him to the office.
A clerk wrote the conversation down as it happened, and it was printed in the Society’s annual report in February 1869.
They asked where his father and mother were.
“Both dead, sir.”
They asked whether he had other relatives, or friends anywhere.
“Haint got no friends, sir; I’ve lived by myself on the street.”
They asked where he stayed.
“I slept in the privy sometime, sir; and then in the stables in Sixteenth street.”
Someone in the room asked how he had got his living.
“Begged it — and then them stablemen, they give me bread sometimes.”
Had he ever been to school, or to Sunday school? No, sir.
The clerk recorded two other things. That the vermin were creeping over the boy as he spoke. And that all of this was happening within two blocks of the richest houses in the city.
They washed him and put him on a train to Illinois.
And then, at the foot of the page, the report adds a later note in a single sentence.
“The lad was taken by an old gentleman of property, who, being childless, has since adopted the boy as his own, and will make him heir to a property.”
A childless man of property, a boy with nothing, and an inheritance that ran in the wrong direction — toward the one who had no claim on it.
Two Things The Record Will Not Give Us
That story needs two caveats, and both of them belong in front of the reader rather than in a footnote. The boy has no name. His own words survive, printed as direct speech, and nobody wrote down who he was. We have his sentences and not his identity — which is a strange, sharp thing to sit with in a week about being sought out by name. And the source is the Children’s Aid Society reporting on the success of the Children’s Aid Society, in a fundraising document, with no independent confirmation and no follow-up. The adoption may have completed exactly as described. The record simply stops there. The wider programme deserves the same honesty. The orphan trains that carried this boy west also separated siblings, placed children with almost no supervision, and were for many of them coercive rather than rescuing. The same institution that gave this child an inheritance broke up other families. So it is not a clean story. It is a true one, told by an interested party, about a system that did real good and real harm. Which is roughly the condition of every human rescue, and exactly why the week does not end with a human one.

We have arrived at the sentence this week has been walking toward.
Second Samuel 9 ends like this: So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king's table, and he was lame in both his feet.
Both halves, in one clause, joined by an and.
He eats at the king's table. He is lame in both feet. The narrator sets them down side by side and declines to resolve the tension for us.
There is no healing verb anywhere in this chapter. Not one. For all the kindness in it — the land restored, the servants assigned, the household established, the place at the table repeated four times — nobody's feet are mended.
A great deal of preaching has tried to soften that ending. The most popular attempt claims that the king's tablecloth hung down and covered his feet, so that seated among the sons he looked like all the rest.
It is a lovely image and it is not in the Bible. It has no source at all. Nobody knows who first said it.
And we should not want it, because it solves the wrong problem. It hides the lameness. Scripture does not hide it. Scripture puts it in the last four words of the chapter, where nobody can miss it.
What has changed is not his feet.
What has changed is that his feet have stopped being the last word about him. For most of his life the first fact anyone reported was his condition — there is still a son of Jonathan, and he is lame in both feet. By the end of the chapter the condition is still true and it has been moved. It comes after his address, after the table, after his status as one who eats among the king's sons.
The lameness is not erased by the kindness. It has simply stopped being the headline.
So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table, and he was lame in both feet.
2 Samuel 9:13 (BSB)
The last verse of the chapter. Both facts, in one sentence, unreconciled.
Paul does the same thing, and people usually flatten it.
In Romans 8 he says believers received the Spirit of adoption, and that by Him we cry out Father. Present possession. Settled.
Eight verses later, in the same chapter, he says we groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
So which is it?
Both, and Paul is not confused. The status is granted. The body is not yet redeemed. A person can be fully a son and still be waiting for something that has not arrived.
That is Mephibosheth's sentence in Greek. Seated at the table, and lame in both feet.
And it is the only version of this week that is honest enough to be useful. If the crowning meant the limp was gone, then everyone still limping would have to conclude they had not been crowned.
Mephibosheth himself understood his position better than most sermons about him. Years later, describing it to David, he does not talk about being healed and he does not talk about deserving anything.
"For all the house of my grandfather deserves death from my lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table."
He knew what he was owed. He knew what he got instead. He never confused the two.
There is a promise about the feet, and it is not in this chapter. It is in Isaiah, and it uses the ordinary word for lame — the same word the end of 2 Samuel 9 uses. Then the lame will leap like a deer.
Then. Not yet. But then.

What are you waiting for God to remove before you will accept that you have already been seated?
Make Something
Today’s is an art response. It needs about ten minutes and nothing you do not already have. You are not making anything anyone else will see.
C. S. Lewis preached a sermon in Oxford in June 1941, at the height of the war, on what glory actually means for ordinary people.
He spends most of it on the strangeness of the idea — that human beings are destined for weight and honour, that there are no ordinary people, that we have never talked to a mere mortal. And he describes what being finally received will feel like: to be called in, welcomed, acknowledged, and to find that this is both an honour beyond our merits and the healing of an old ache.
And then, having taken his listeners that far up, he sets them back down with one sentence.
"Meanwhile the cross comes before the crown and tomorrow is a Monday morning."
That is the right place to end this week's fifth day.
The crown is real. Psalm 103 has God crowning you as a matter of settled habit, one of five things He characteristically does. Ephesians has you already seated, in the same tense as the resurrection.
And tomorrow is a Monday morning. There is still a limp. There is still a job, a diagnosis, an estrangement not yet mended, a body that is not yet redeemed.
The man in this chapter had a permanent seat and permanent damage, at the same time, for the rest of his life.
He is not a cautionary tale about incomplete healing. He is what it looks like to be crowned before you are repaired — which is the actual condition of everybody reading this, whether they have made peace with it or not.
Prayer
Father, You seated me. Paul says it in the same breath as the resurrection and I have spent years treating it as a promise about later. I am not asking You today to take away the thing that has not changed. I am asking to stop letting it be the last word about me. Crown Your own gifts in me, since none of them started with me. And give me the nerve to sit down. Amen.

Bishop of Hippo, and the most influential theologian of the Western church. He preached his way through the entire book of Psalms to an ordinary congregation, and those expositions survive. His comment on Psalm 103:4 is four words long and has been quoted for sixteen centuries.

He solves the problem of an unearned crown without pretending the crown is small. God honours in us the work He did in us, and calls it ours.
